SUMMARY:Shane Hennessy in Concert!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an all ages show staring international touring sensation Shane Hennessy in concert in the Mayfair Theatre at the Irish American Heritage Center\, Sunday\, March 19th at 6:30pm.\nBilled as “one of the most exciting live performers of his generation\, with an ability to move between styles and genres with ease ” by Irish Music Magazine\, audiences can never be too sure what will come next during the exciting mix of jazz\, blues\, country\, soul\, traditional Irish music\, and world music he offers. With the addition of some smooth vocals\, genre-hopping improvisations\, and well-arranged covers\, it makes sense why music legend super-producer Nile Rodgers (CHIC) thinks that “ his style is killer\, it’s really cool stuff \,” and why guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel says that Shane “ transcends the guitar the same way Muhammed Ali transcended boxing.”\nTickets are $30\, $25 for members. Tickets for groups of ten or more are $22.\nPurchase here: Tickets for Shane

SUMMARY:Paint Night
SUMMARY:Starkbierfest Open Haus
DESCRIPTION:Friday March 17th is a night of fun at our Open Haus! This month’s theme is Starkbierfest! We will have German Bier on tap and food for purchase!  \nAfter the debauchery of Faschingszeit (carnival season)\, we have started into Fastenzeit (lent). Fortify yourself for this time of austereness by trying some “liquid food” – the genius invention of 17th century Paulaner monk Salvator who decided to help his fasting brothers by brewing a batch of “strong beer” which was rich in nutrients and calories. \nTo this day\, all of Bavaria’s breweries create a version of Starkbier during lent. Just like the originator\, Salvator from the Paulaner Brewery\, most varieties end with the “-ator” appendix: Optimator\, Triumphator\, Maximator\, Terminator\, and countless others. During our March Stammtisch Open Haus you can taste some of those delicious brews. \nOur Open Haus is a great way to meet new friends\, or bring your friends and introduce them to the Haus! This event is located in our popular 2nd Floor Brauhaus. \nFree parking at 5/3 Bank after 6:00 PM located at Western and Gunnison

SUMMARY:Surviving the Long Wars: Exhibition Close-Up and Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:This program will be held in-person at the Newberry. Advance registration required. \nJoin military veterans and poets Erika Renee Land\, Monty Little (Diné)\, Dunya Mikhail\, and Carlos Sirah for an evening of poetry exploring the disparate impacts of war and the search for a path toward solidarity. \nThis event will also provide a closer look at the Newberry exhibition Surviving the Long Wars: Residues and Rebellions. The exhibition coincides with the second Veteran Art Triennial and Summit\, held this year in Chicago. The exhibition at the Newberry is open February 28 – May 27\, 2023. \nAbout the SURVIVING THE LONG WARS Project:\nFrom the US “Indian Wars” to the “Global War on Terror\,” SURVIVING THE LONG WARS explores the multiple overlapping histories that shape our understanding of warfare\, as well as alternative visions of peace\, healing\, and justice generated by diverse communities impacted by war. \nInspired by the powerful artwork of Indigenous and Native American artists responding to the US “Indian Wars\,” and artists of the Greater Middle East reacting to the “Global War on Terror\,” the second Veteran Art Triennial and Summit focuses on how these artistic responses complicate and entangle with the artistic practices of veterans. The featured artworks\, projects\, and programs create opportunities for people to deepen their understanding of the impact of war. \nThe project began in September 2022 with a virtual scholarly seminar series at the nexus of critical ethnic studies\, Native/Indigenous studies\, and Middle Eastern Studies on the histories and futures of Native rebellion alongside contemporary US militarism and warfare. The project culminates in the spring 2023 second Veteran Art Triennial and Summit at the Chicago Cultural Center\, Hyde Park Art Center\, and Newberry Library. \nRelated Exhibitions and Programming: \nVeteran Art Summit: March 16 – March 19\, 2023 \nHyde Park Art Center Exhibition: March 16 – July 9\, 2023; Opening Program: March 17\, 2023 \nChicago Cultural Center Exhibition: March 4 – June 4\, 2023; Opening Program: March 18\, 2023 \nCredits: \nSURVIVING THE LONG WARS is organized by Aaron Hughes\, Ronak K. Kapadia\, Therese Quinn\, Joseph Lefthand\, Amber Zora\, and Meranda Roberts with support from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Institute for the Humanities Innovation Grant\, UIC Award for Creative Activity\, Chicago Cultural Center\, Hyde Park Art Center\, Newberry Library\, DEMIL Art Fund\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Dialogues on the Experiences of War Grant. SUMMARY:A Promised Land On The Horizon: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Our current exhibition ‘The Promised Land’\, features eleven contemporary photo and image artists working across a diverse range of visual methods\, that re-imagine stories of city life and the Great Migration through the decolonization of the lens\, Southern rooted influences\, movement\, family archives and portraiture. \nThe Great Migration was one of the largest movements of people in United States history. It has transformed cities like Chicago\, Detroit\, New York and Pittsburgh between 1916 and 1970. Chicago received more than 500\,000 Black Southern Americans during this time. To Southern Blacks\, Chicago was considered the “Promised Land”. Stories of big city life\, jobs with good wages\, homes with running water\, and basic freedoms denied to Blacks in the South made the Northern city a prime destination for Blacks coming from below the Mason-Dixon line. As the most documented migration in US history\, photographers like Gordon Parks\, Florestine Perrault Collins\, Moneta Sleet Jr.\, Roy DeCarava\, and Coreen Simpson created imagery that demonstrated Black life in movement. With familial ties to North and South of the Mason-Dixon Line\, this stellar group of contemporary artists respond to the many migrations of African Diaspora peoples and the influences of these movements in their work. \nThis exhibition was organized and curated by SSCAC Exhibitions Manager Lola Ayisha Ogbara\, and features the following artists: Lawrence Ageyi\, Anwulika Anigbo\, Rose Blouin\, Billie Carter-Rankin\, Jen Everett\, Mandela Hudson\, Shabez Jamal\, Sulyiman Stokes\, Darryl DeAngelo Terrell\, Loren Toney\, and Derrick Woods-Morrow. \nComplimentary coffee and cake will be provided during the program.

SUMMARY:Youth Painting Workshop (ages 12-17)
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to offer a youth painting workshop for only $10\, thanks to the generous donations of visitors who help keep our Museum free and programming affordable to all. \nVanessa Sandoval is a contemporary artist and business owner of Namart Designs (website link). She was born and raised in Chicago and is an active artisan during our Barrio Arts Festival and NaviArts. Her primary focus is paying homage to her Puerto Rican roots by painting cultural and meditative art pieces. Vanessa has taught art classes throughout the City of Chicago and beyond. \nIn this painting workshop\, 20 youth/teens (12-17) will learn about Vanessa’s passion for art and how she started her artisan business. She will spend most of her time teaching them how to use acrylic paints to make one-of-a-kind wooden coasters like the ones she sells on her website and during artisan fairs. We know students will leave inspired to create and\, maybe\, become small business owners! \nAGENDA \n10:00 AM – Parents/Guardians check-in and sign participant waiver (Parents/Guardians are welcome to stay\, tour the museum\, and have some coffee & treats) \n10:30 AM – Welcome and Introductions \n10:45 AM – Begin Project \n12:30 AM – Painting Workshop Ends (Participants must be picked-up by 12:30 pm) \nPlease email: info@nmprac.org if you have any questions.
