SUMMARY:Bronzeville in Reel Time with South Side Home Movie Project
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with South Side Home Movie Project\, with support from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelly Foundation and University of Chicago’s Arts and Public Life\, SSCAC is thrilled to host a special screening showcasing select cinema reels of Ramon Williams! Ramon Williams\, Black IBEW electrician and film hobbyist\, was an early adopter of amateur filmmaking and invested in documenting the Bronzeville community in which he lived — filming major Bronzeville social and civic events between the 1940s and 1960s. \nWe’re honored to show a selection of these films during Black History Month\, to highlight Ramon Williams’s commitment to documenting Black life on the South Side\, and the lasting legacy of Black cinema’s power to visualize Black life in real time. \nWe’ll be joined by SSHMP Assistant Director\, Saroop Singh (fka Justin Williams)\, Bronzeville Historical Society President Sherry Williams\, and PhD student in Cinema and Media Studies at UChicago\, Avery LaFlamme for a live dialogue about Ramon’s cinema work and legacy in the Bronzeville community. \nDonated to South Side Home Movie Project in 2020\, the Ramon Williams Collection encompasses 302 film reels\, their largest donation yet\, representing never-before-seen visual records of Bronzeville authored by one of its few citizens with a movie camera! What was Black social life like during that time? How did Black folks present and fashion themselves? What were significant events that took place in the Bronzeville community? We hope you’ll join us to find out! \nSSHMP presents a uniquely successful model for encouraging local residents to recognize the value of their personal archives\, to preserve original film prints in optimal conditions\, and to digitize home movies for public access\, creative projects and scholarly research. Their film vault currently houses over 600 film reels (8mm\, Super 8\, 16mm) from 33 South Side families. The Project offers a robust line-up of public programs that invite students\, neighbors\, artists and partner organizations to explore and activate the archive in imaginative new ways. \nThis program is generously supported by Arts and Public Life at the University of Chicago and the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelly Foundation

To name a few\, Margaret Burroughs\, Richard Wright\, William Walker\, Gwendolyn Brooks\, and members from AfriCOBRA have all established a creative foundation in Bronzeville. Nevertheless\, the significance of their contribution is not only the artwork they produced\, but also the aesthetic tradition that they established. This aesthetic tradition was founded to reframe the fraudulent historical narrative of African Americans. Today\, there are a number of artists who are following this aesthetic tradition. This documentary will introduce its audience to the cultural traditions that emerged from the Bronzeville community. This tradition challenged the status quo through activism\, visual arts\, literature\, and academic research.Tracing Our Path Through Bronzeville will highlight the contributions of various cultural institutions in Bronzeville\, and contemporary African American artists that attempted to redefine the image and voice of black culture. This documentary will generate a new perspective on the significance of the cultural legacy of African American art from the perspective of artists who have exhibited their paintings in the Bronzeville art galleries. \nBlack Table Talk: Visualizing Black Culture \nWednesday\, February 28th \nBCC Gallery\, Addams Hall 207. 12 PM- 1 PM \nJoin our conversation! SUMMARY:Splinter: A Romantic Comedy
DESCRIPTION:A play for those held captive by theater itself. On the border of illusion and reality\, the only constant is human feeling.\nAfter a glorious Chicagoland premiere of Splinter: A Romantic Comedy in Wheeling and Evanston\, IL\, the play will be performed again at The Edge Theater at 5451 N Broadway\, Chicago\, IL 60640 on Friday January 26th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday January 27th at 6:00 p.m.\nSplinter is a kind\, light romantic comedy\, based on French drama masterpieces. You will laugh and be a little sad. You will get a huge boost of optimism. The play is about love of the theater\, about friendship and fidelity\, and about the ability to dream. It is a sensitive and touching story about the theatrical world\, where it is difficult at times to distinguish what is an illusion and what is reality. The only constant is human feeling. \nLearn more about Splinter Theatre – www.splintertheatre.com\nFollow us on Facebook – https://fb.me/e/3673fzYtE \nAbout Splinter\nThe aging actress dreams of returning to the theater\, making new friends and losing old ones. Elizabeth is unrestrainedly devoted to her only passion – the stage. In it\, she finds the strength to live\, feel\, love and hope. Theater is in her blood. It is like a splinter that does not let you forget about yourself…The action of this poetic and poignant performance takes place in a small run-down hotel. Next to the former (or maybe just failed) actress are two men. One is a lover to whom a girlfriend is already a burden. The other is an uncouth bellboy. With the help of the main character\, he can approach the alluring and hitherto inaccessible world of theater. In the fictional world of Elizabeth\, touching\, naive and magnificent dreams are born and die\, and the soul of a delightful dreamer and woman blossoms.

SUMMARY:Get Your Architectural Kitsch on Route 66
DESCRIPTION:Called the Mother Road\, U.S. Highway 66 has been a fixture in American history since its inception in 1926. Join us for a trip along the highway – known simply as Route 66 – as we look at the best examples of what has been called Roadside Architecture: the visual reflections of the American regions the road crisscrossed. \nRoute 66 was an exploration trail to America’s west\, became a migration trail from the Dust Bowl to California\, a military transport road during World War II\, and later reverted to a tourism trek. Typically\, the vernacular architecture along the way was suited for its purpose as gas stations\, eateries or souvenir shops\, all new building types in the 1930s. Over the years\, the architectural styles illustrated what many would call “kitsch\,” defined as cheaply made\, disposable\, accidental or even tacky. Have some fun\, get your kicks – and kitsch – on Route 66. \nPresenter: Ellen Shubart \nA lifelong Chicagoan\, CAC docent Ellen Shubart spent more than two decades as a journalist\, taught at the college level and ended her career as an advocate for sustainable city planning. A historian by training\, with advanced degrees in U.S. History and Historic Preservation\, she has written four books all with an emphasis on the history of the City of Chicago: What’s With Chicago?\, Images of America: Glencoe\, Illinois\, Taylor Street\, Chicago’s Little Italy and most recently\, Chicago: An Illustrated Timeline.

SUMMARY:Fundraiser: The Negotiator: Billy Caldwell Documentary
DESCRIPTION:Date: 2024-06-20 \nLocation: \n9603 Woods Drive \nSkokie\, \nIL \n60077 \nUnited States \n  \n\nA Fundraiser for Mitchell Museum of the American Indian: The Negotiator: Billy Caldwell Documentary \nThursday\, June 20 |  7 PM film showtime \n\nAs one of the treaty signers in 1829 and 1833\, Billy Caldwell and others negotiated the sale of 5\,000\,000 acres of land in northwest Illinois\, resulting in the removal of all Native American tribes in the state of Illinois. Billy Caldwell\, son of a Mohawk woman\, Rising Sun and British Army Captain\, William Caldwell was a leader in early Chicago.  Although he was not a blood relative of the Great Lakes tribes in the area in 1833\, Caldwell worked to negotiate the safe passage of the United Nations of Chippawa\, Ottawa and Potawatomi out of the state of Illinois and west to Council Bluffs\, Iowa. Today\, Caldwell’s Band of Prairie People now live in Mayetta\, Kansas as the federally-recognized tribe of Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. This documentary explores these actions through research and interviews with local subject experts.
