SUMMARY:The Bridge to Native Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge to Native Chicago\nMembers of RedLine\, a local Chicago Native American Drum group\, and interdisciplinary artist Ronnie Preston (San Carlos Apache)\, along with jazz musicians from France\, collectively known as The Bridge\, will be the featured musicians for this unique collaboration.\n\nThe Bridge intends to form a network for exchange\, production\, and diffusion\, to build a transatlantic bridge that will be crossed on a regular basis by French and American musicians as part of collaborative projects. And\, in addition to the scheduled projects\, encourage meetings and relationships between creative musicians and perpetuate them. In other words: to give them the times and spaces to join and rejoin on both sides of the ocean and to deepen their exchanges.\n\nRedLine is a group of intertribal singers who perform songs from the great Oklahoma Nations of the Southern Plains. RedLine formed in 2012 to address a vital need for a community-based Drum. This action was necessary as it created resurgence in arts engagement needed to mobilize and build community and introduce/reintroduce cultural practice among youth and young adults in the Native American community. Through song\, RedLine shares a small taste of southern plains culture with Chicago and the Midwest big water area\, while providing a circle for intergenerational teaching and learning.\n\nChampion grass dancer and hoop dancer\, singer\, storyteller\, and accomplished artist\, Ronnie Preston is dedicated to sharing the cultures of Native American tribes and nations through music and dance. As a performing artist and spokesperson\, Mr. Preston has toured from coast to coast\, frequently as a guest on college campuses. A descendant of the San Carlos Apache nation in Arizona\, he began dancing and attending pow wow celebrations as a young child. Now residing in Chicago\, he is a celebrated teacher\, performer throughout the Midwest\, a guest for events at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and other venues\, and performer and emcee for pow wows and many other presentations celebrating Native American culture.

Be sure to join us on Sunday\, April 24th at 7:00pm for a panel discussion with filmmakers Costa Boutsikaris and Dr. Michael Kotutwa Johnson. *All links will be emailed before April 22nd. \n  \nInhabitants: Indigenous Perspectives on Restoring Our World \nFor millennia Native Americans successfully stewarded and shaped their landscapes\, but centuries of colonization have disrupted their ability to maintain their traditional land management practices. From deserts\, coastlines\, forests\, mountains\, and prairies\, Native communities across the US are restoring their ancient relationships with the land. The five stories include sustaining traditions of Hopi dryland farming in Arizona; restoring buffalo to the Blackfeet reservation in Montana; maintaining sustainable forestry on the Menominee reservation in Wisconsin; reviving native food forests in Hawaii; and returning prescribed fire to the landscape by the Karuk Tribe of California. While attending academic conferences on Climate Change Adaptation she continued to hear a constant request for higher quality media of Native land management projects. Through conversations with Tribal project leaders and our supporting foundations we developed a plan for creating a film to help document these projects. Her research\, teaching\, writing and curating concern the preservation and interpretation of artist-built environments and the realms of non-mainstream art. Stone was curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection (1997–2020) and currently consults for the John Michael Kohler Art Center’s Art Preserve in Sheboygan\, Wisc. She was co-curator with Kenneth C. SUMMARY:Author Talk: Making Mexican Chicago
DESCRIPTION:In Making Mexican Chicago\, Mike Amezcua offers a powerful multiracial history of Chicago that sheds new light on the origins and endurance of urban inequality. Amezcua visits the Newberry to discuss how the Windy City became a postwar Latinx metropolis in the face of white resistance. \nThough Chicago is often popularly defined by its Polish\, Black\, and Irish populations\, Cook County is home to the third-largest Mexican American population in the United States. The story of Mexican immigration and integration into the city is one of complex political struggles\, deeply entwined with issues of housing and neighborhood control. \nIn the decades after World War II\, working-class Chicago neighborhoods like Pilsen and Little Village became sites of upheaval and renewal. Mexican Americans attempted to build new communities in the face of white resistance that cast them as perpetual aliens. Hosts Tonika and NPHM Programming Director\, Tiff Beatty will interview community members that are actively involved in addressing Chicago’s ongoing housing crisis. \nThis program will include open captions. \nTonika Lewis Johnson is a photographer\, social justice artist and life-long resident of Chicago’s South Side neighborhood of Englewood. She is also co-founder of the Englewood Arts Collective and Resident Association of Greater Englewood. Her critically acclaimed Folded Map project visually investigates disparities among Chicago residents and brings them together for conversation. Most recently\, Tonika was selected as the National Public Housing Museum’s 2021 Artist as Instigator. In that role\, she created her newest project: Inequity for Sale\, which highlights the living history of Greater Englewood homes sold on Land Sale Contracts in the 50s and 60s. \nTiff Beatty is a cultural organizer\, arts administrator\, performance poet\, and host. She is the current program director of arts\, culture\, and public policy at National Public Housing Museum in Chicago. Tiff Beatty was a 2019-2021 Chicago United for Equity Fellow and Senior Fellow and received the additional distinction of the 2019 Field Leader Award from the Field Foundation of Illinois. She was previously the program director at the Chicago Humanities Festival and Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture. \nRobin Rue Simmons is the Founder and Executive Director of FirstRepair\, a new not-for-profit organization that informs local reparations\, nationally. She is the former 5th Ward Alderman for the City of Evanston\, IL\, where she led\, in collaboration with others\, the passage of the nation’s first municipal-funded reparations legislation. \nAmber Hendley passionate researcher\, educator and activist. She is the co-author of The Plunder of Black Wealth in Chicago Report (2019). which quantified the amount legally\, but unjustly\, extracted from the African American community in Chicago through predatory residential contract selling during the Second Great Migration.

DESCRIPTION:Keeping food history modern – Contemporary trends and what “the Swedish chef” is doing. \nWe all know the keywords today in the international food scene\, such as the importance of eating green\, choosing sustainable\, and the importance of having a climate friendly attitude when shopping\, and of course in relation to our own preferences and diets. \nIn this presentation\, associate professor Richard Tellström from Uppsala in Sweden gives some perspectives on the contemporary food and restaurant trends in Sweden and how Swedes take care of their food heritage after the pandemic years. What foods and dishes from the past have come into use during the restrictions\, and how is the creativity bubbling right now. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for this FREE virtual discussion with Xiang “Sean” Gao\, the creator-composer of Shanghai Sonatas\, a pioneering new musical that combines musical theatre\, live classical music\, and visual art. Based on the memoirs of Jewish refugee musicians who escaped Nazi Germany and found refuge in Shanghai in the 1930s and ’40s\, this musical shares how music helped them to survive the war and how they taught classical music to the local Chinese. The music composed by Xiang is inspired by Jewish and Chinese traditional music\, European classical music\, and musical theatre. \nThis discussion is hosted by the Chinese American Museum of Chicago with the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) and the American Jewish Committee (AJC). \nRegister here \nAbout Xiang Gao\nNamed as Musical America’s Top 30 Professionals of the Year in 2021\, Xiang is one of the world’s most successful presenters\, producers\, composers\, and pedagogues. He has solo-performed violin for many world leaders and with 100 plus orchestras worldwide. As the Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of Delaware\, Xiang is the founding director of the Master Players Concert Series & Festival. Shanghai Sonatas – the new musical conceptualized and composed by Xiang is being developed by Tony-winning producers and touring as a concert production. DESCRIPTION:Live Performances will take place in the DANK Treffpunkt (1st floor gallery)\, where guests are encouraged to watch at any time during the session. Performances begin at 5:00pm and go until the artists are done painting (about 2 hours).\n\nPerformance dates:\n\nWednesday\, May 4 – Sergio Gomez with Beate Axmann\n\n5-7 PM\n\n\nTuesday\, May 17 – Joanna Pinsky with Beate Axmann\n\n5-7 PM\n\n\n\nAbout the performances:\nBeate Axmann has invited two Chicago-based artists to collaborate with her on this dynamic exhibition. Each artist will begin with their own large canvas. During this performance\, there will be several exchanges of the two canvases – meaning that each artist will add to the other artist’s work! This encounter will make visible the meaning of creative intervention\, trust and respect between the artists\, and the differences in their artistic expression.\n\nSpectators will have the unique opportunity to experience a very special art encounter – certainly not one that you see every day.
