DESCRIPTION:Archivist Skyla Hearn and SSCAC Public Engagement lead Zakkiyyah Najeebah Dumas-O’neal kick off 3831/VOICES to engage in an informal conversation that traverses Skyla Hearn’s archiving practice\, their intersecting connections to Black women arts workers and SSCAC\, and the influences that help sustain them in their work.\nGrab a cup of tea – or wine\, and join us! All attendees are welcome to join in on this conversation\, so come ready to talk\, reflect\, and ask questions!\n\n3831/VOICES is a new program series of conversations and lectures featuring Black artists\, scholars\, curators\, historians\, and arts workers that invite our community into their creative practices\, research\, and conceptual processes\, and more! 3831 takes after SSCAC’s exact numerical address in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood. Although we recognize ourselves as an iconic historical site for Black artistic and cultural advancement\, we continue to evolve as a contemporary hub for new thought practices\, creative practices\, and innovative frameworks being developed by a diverse array of amazing folks here in our city\, and beyond.\n\nSkyla Hearn (Skylah Sensahrae) is a proud Chicagoan (South Side) by way of Mississippi. As an archivist\, liberatory memory and cultural worker Skyla is most concerned with supporting a community’s attempt to understand\, document and share its own history\, particularly those aspects that have not been well recorded. Skyla’s passion and dedication towards the creation\, management\, preservation and accessibility of archives\, with particular focus on BIPOC LGBTQIA+ collections\, ephemeral materials\, knowledge development\, and social justice has provided her with unique opportunities to work with diverse individuals\, communities and repositories at various capacities nationally and internationally.\n\nSkyla is also co-founder of The Blackivists\, a collective of trained Black memory workers who provide expertise on archiving and preservation practices to communities in the Chicago land area; and the inaugural Manager of Archives for Cook County Government under the Offices of the President of the Board of Commissioners.\nAs a legacy keeper\, she recently (March 2021) co-edited the zine publication Our Girl Tuesday: An Unfurling for Dr. Margaret T.G. Burroughs alongside Sarah Ross and Tempestt Hazel with an introduction by Mariame Kaba\, published by Sojourners for Justice Press.

March 16 marks the first anniversary of the Atlanta spa shooting. Held in partnership with the Asian Justice Movement and other community partners\, this Day of Healing will focus on speaking up and breaking the silence. Sessions include healing meditation led by Elizabeth 방실 Smith\, PsyD\, CCTP-II\, ASDCS; open-mic dialogue; group yoga led by EZ Yogaspace; a self-defense workshop led by 10-year Krav Maga practitioner\, Natalie Chan; and a virtual Korean Drums Performance by the youth of KPAC.\n\n\nCapacity is limited to 40\, so RSVP is required. DESCRIPTION:A celebration of the life and work of artist Cosmo Campoli (1922-1997)\, through images\, films\, lectures\, and storytelling.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThe event will be emceed by Paul Durica\, Director of Exhibitions at the Newberry Library. He has a PhD in English from the University of Chicago\, where he developed a series of free and interactive walks\, talks\, and reenactments dealing with Chicago’s past. These public history experiences have received local and national media attention and led to collaborations with cultural institutions from across the city. Find out more at https://pocketguidetohell.com/ \nPresentations will include: \n\nA riff on the Jean Debuffet’s seminal 1951 lecture “Anticultural Positions” by Northwestern University Professor Rebecca Zorach;\nPersonal and artistic remembrances from renowned sculptor Virginio Ferarri\, whose sculptures Dialogo (1971)\, Interlocking (1993)\, and Caring (2015) are visible on the University of Chicago campus;\nA screening of Cosmo’s Cosmos\, a 1981 documentary short by Annette Barbier and Terry Moyement;\nNewly unearthed 1991 footage of Campoli performing his unique take on beat poetry\, shot by filmmaker Joe Winston\, director of the soon-to-be-released documentary Punch 9 for Harold Washington;\nA screening of a cooking demonstration of the recipe for Cosmo’s Special Spaghetti\, a truly unique dish that reflected Campoli’s whimsical attitude. Won Kim\, chef at Bridgeport’s Kimski restaurant\, who is also a graffiti artist and DJ\, recreated Cosmo’s famous dish that he used to serve at the Blue Gargoyle.\n\nAdvance RSVP’s are encouraged. Masks and proof of vaccination are required. \n\n\nThis event is part of a day-long series of events\, Cosmo’s Cosmos: 100 Years of Birth\, Death\, and Rebirth. \nMarch 21\, 2022 will be the centenary of the birth of sculptor and Hyde Park resident Cosmo Campoli. Campoli (1922-1997) was part of the “Monster Roster” group associated with the Chicago Imagists in the 1950s\, including Leon Golub and H.C. Westermann. His work\, which frequently centered on themes of birth and death\, was exhibited as part of the Chicago Imagists at the Hyde Park Art Center. His sculpture\, “Bird of Peace\,” known colloquially as “The Egg\,” is a well-known piece of public art in Nichols Park.

Nandita is a graduate of the Bard College-International Center of Photography’s MFA program and teaches photography at SUNY Purchase. \n𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐰𝐚 lives and works in Portland\, Oregon. Originally from New Delhi\, India\, she received an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in the same from the Maharaja Sayajirao University\, Baroda\, India. \n𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐡 is a visual artist and choreographer based in NYC. He is the recipient of the Skowhegan\, Yaddo\, Residency Unlimited\, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts residencies. Along with the competitive New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. \n𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐆𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚 𝐖𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬\, the panel moderator\, is an American of Bengali and Maharashtrian heritage\, she currently lives in and works from Portland\, OR. DESCRIPTION:A chamber music collaborative trio project founded by José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Colin Young\, featuring Miguel Zenón.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nSRBCC presents {Tres} \n{Trés} is a chamber music trio founded in 2010. It started as a collaborative project between José Antonio Zayas Cabán and Colin Young\, with the purpose of performing transcriptions for 2 saxophones and piano. The trio has since performed chamber music by a wide range of composers in Central America\, the Caribbean\, and throughout the United States. \nRecently\, {Trés} finished a national tour titled A Tribute to Puerto Rico that was partly devoted to help raise funds and awareness about Puerto Rico and the island’s efforts to recover from Hurricanes Irma and María. This has now led to our 2019 project\, our first annual multi-week residency in Puerto Rico. \nAs the recipient of the 2019 New Music USA Project Grant\, José will is working with {Trés} on collaborations with composers such as MacArthur and Guggenheim Award recipient Miguel Zenón\, Brooklyn-based Angelica Negrón\, Illinois-based Carlos Carrillo\, and Dublin\, Ireland-based Amanda Feery\, {Trés} will bring free concerts – that will include new music – to low income communities across the island.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening - De:Lata
DESCRIPTION:Puerto Rican artist Bibiana Suárez’s colorful paintings with playful combinations of text and image from the new series she has titled De:Lata will be shown at NMPRAC starting March 10\, 2022. The title is a word play between the verb delatar\, to tell\, and the noun lata\, can\, the phrases dar lata\, to be a bore\, and de una lata\, from a can.  This is because what has inspired Suárez’s new body of work is her analysis of food labels and their misleading representation of contemporary Latinas. This series extends Suárez’s interest in the marketing of Latino culture. \nBorn and raised in Puerto Rico\, Bibiana Suárez has resided in Chicago since 1980. She has a BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is currently a Professor in The Art School at DePaul University. Suárez’s art is a laboratory where her personal experiences get tested against the socio- political conditions in which people of color live\, emphasizing the convergence between race\, politics\, and culture as applied to Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in the U.S.  Her solo exhibitions include Memoria(Memory)\, Hyde Park Art Center\, Chicago; Domino/Dominó\, Museo del Barrio\, NY and Illinois Arts Gallery. Among her most recent group exhibitions are Repatriación/Repatriation at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico\, and Identity Play at Space Gallery\, Pittsburg.  She has received several awards including three Illinois Arts Council Individual Visual Artist Fellowships\, a NEA Regional Fellowship and was a fellow at the RACE Center\, University of Chicago\, the Ragdale Foundation\, and the Center for Latino Research\, DePaul University. \nImage:\nLa Fajona (The Hard Worker)\nacrylic on canvas\n52 x 78 ½ in.\n2018

SUMMARY:Pulaski Day Virtual Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Pulaski Day virtually with the Polish Museum of America (PMA) on Monday\, March 7\, 2022. Top officials from national\, state\, county\, and city governments and leaders of Polonian organizations and institutions will observe the State of Illinois annual recognition of the Polish American community by honoring the Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski. Speakers will include Polish Ambassador Marek Magierowski; Consul General of Ukraine in Chicago Serhiy Koledov; Mayor Lori Lightfoot; Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs; Frank Spula\, National President of the Polish American Congress; Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas; Judge Aurelia Pucinski and State Representative Delia Ramirez. The program will feature performances by Mirosława Sojka-Topór\, Kamil Bundyra\, the Academy of Music of the Paderewski Symphony Orchestra\, and Tatra Mountains Cultural Foundation Ensemble\, along with filmed presentations\, and conclude with the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at Stanislaw Batowski’s painting of Pulaski at Savannah. The program begins promptly at 10 a.m. and will be streamed live on the PMA website: www.PolishMuseumOfAmerica.org.

DESCRIPTION:A Chicago celebration of the life and legacy of Tito Matos\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOn January 18\, 2022 the Puerto Rican cultural community was shocked by the news of the sudden departure of musical giant Tito Matos. After an extensive career as a master percussionist\, teacher and bandleader of Viento de Agua and La Máquina Insular\, Tito left a strong legacy of community work and cultural preservation in Puerto Rico and abroad. \nHis time living in New York\, as well as his relationship with Chicago’s musicians and cultural institutions allowed him to deepen his roots in the diaspora. He was a teacher\, mentor and friend for hundreds of plena practitioners across the globe. \nSRBCC is proud to partner with Tito’s closest friends from Puerto Rico and Chicago\, including Lagarto Figueroa\, Llonsi Martínez\, Ricardo Pons\, Noel Rosado\, Emanuel Santana (Puerto Rico)\, Ivelisse Díaz (La Escuelita Bombera de Corazón)\, Bomba con Buya \, Las Bompleneras and Los Pleneros de Don Segundo (Chicago) to celebrate his enduring legacy\, raise funds for La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos\, and establish a new scholarship for Chicago’s creative youth in his honor. \nJoin us in this Chicago celebration of the Life and Legacy of Héctor “Tito” Matos.
