SUMMARY:Youth Painting Workshop (ages 12-17)
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to offer a youth painting workshop for only $10\, thanks to the generous donations of visitors who help keep our Museum free and programming affordable to all. \nVanessa Sandoval is a contemporary artist and business owner of Namart Designs (website link). She was born and raised in Chicago and is an active artisan during our Barrio Arts Festival and NaviArts. Her primary focus is paying homage to her Puerto Rican roots by painting cultural and meditative art pieces. Vanessa has taught art classes throughout the City of Chicago and beyond. \nIn this painting workshop\, 20 youth/teens (12-17) will learn about Vanessa’s passion for art and how she started her artisan business. She will spend most of her time teaching them how to use acrylic paints to make one-of-a-kind wooden coasters like the ones she sells on her website and during artisan fairs. We know students will leave inspired to create and\, maybe\, become small business owners! \nAGENDA \n10:00 AM – Parents/Guardians check-in and sign participant waiver (Parents/Guardians are welcome to stay\, tour the museum\, and have some coffee & treats) \n10:30 AM – Welcome and Introductions \n10:45 AM – Begin Project \n12:30 AM – Painting Workshop Ends (Participants must be picked-up by 12:30 pm) \nPlease email: info@nmprac.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Loss: for G
DESCRIPTION:Anders Zanichkowsky is an artist\, weaver\, and the owner of Burial Blankets. Part of the group show “Aesthetics of Loss” (February 18 – April 16) “for G” is a memorial for their first love\, made of handwoven cloth and an audio piece created from cell phone recordings addressing him in death as a way to mourn. The live performance is a chance to experience the work in an intimate gathering that may feel like a cross between a wake and a late-night phone conversation. At turns affectionate\, philosophical\, and raw with grief\, the audio piece circles around themes of romance and youth; the magic of cinema\, art\, and memory; and the vulnerability of queer people to untimely death. \nThe gallery opens for seating at 6:30 and the performance begins promptly at 6:45\, running approximately one hour. Afterwards there will be a reception with the artist in the East gallery. During regular hours\, visitors to the museum can sit with the cloth and listen to the audio piece over their headphones. \n\n\n\n\n RSVP \n\n\n\n\nAccessibility and COVID Precautions: \nUIMA has a wheelchair accessible entrance and mens and womens bathrooms. Proof of vaccination is required and masks must be worn during the performance. There will be armless chairs for all who want them and a section designated for social distancing at 6 feet apart. Light refreshments will be served during the reception and masks will become optional for people eating or drinking. This work is in English with no visual captions or transcript and makes references to IV drug use\, mental illness\, early death\, and suicide. If you have any other questions about attending\, please contact the museum staff.

SUMMARY:Beginning of New Life
DESCRIPTION:Esther Park Solo Exhibition \nMar. 10-22\, 2023 \nI am a self-taught artist and have been working for the past 3 years on telling my journey of healing through art. I remember a vision that Jesus had given me years ago; that vision is painting for a time as this. \nI was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2019. When I could no longer endure the hard moments by myself Jesus inspired me to release those emotions on the canvas. I felt a strong connection with the Lord during the times when I could listen\, talk\, and pray to Him while I was painting. I found that painting was a way to express myself and bring about emotional healing. I am still going through chemotherapy but am finding the strength to prepare for my exhibitions so that those who are losing hope and going through physical hardships can be encouraged and inspired by these paintings. \n Esther Park \nwww.heparkart.com

SUMMARY:Writing a Personal Urban History —The Importance of Genealogy and Local History for Understanding US Histor
DESCRIPTION:This program will be held in-person at the Newberry and livestreamed on Zoom. The online version of this event will be live captioned. Please register below. \nIn-Person Registration \nLivestream Registration \nAcademic historians have sometimes struggled to understand how local and family histories illuminate national histories. Are they just exceptional\, or can they provide new insights into some of the most challenging historical questions? Leslie M. Harris is among a group of historians who have turned to their own family and personal experiences as inspiration for writing history. The Newberry’s collections on local history and genealogy provide a productive intellectual context for her work. \nIn this program\, Dr. Harris will discuss with the Newberry’s Daniel Greene what it means for her\, as a professional historian\, to turn to her own and her family’s life as an inspiration for writing history. \nThe David L. Wagner Distinguished Lectureship for Humanistic Inquiry Series is funded by David L. Wagner and Renie B. Adams.

Both In-Person & Virtual options are available. \nWard Miller\, the Executive Director of Preservation Chicago\, will announce the 2023 Chicago 7 Most Endangered and share the history\, threat and recommendations for each selection. \nDespite seemingly impossible odds\, the public interest and attention generated by Preservation Chicago’s Chicago 7 Most Endangered list\, coupled with dedicated advocacy has resulted in a remarkable number of preservation victories over the years. \nIn celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Chicago 7 Most Endangered program\, a brief retrospective will highlight notable wins and losses. \nAIA/CES Credits: 1 LUs \nPRESENTER: WARD MILLER\nWard Miller is the executive director of Preservation Chicago\, a position he has held since 2013. SUMMARY:Reel Film Club: Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:Chinese migrants Lei and Wong clandestinely arrive in Ecuador. Lei plans to travel all the way to New York; Wong wants to settle in Latin America and bring his son to live with him. SUMMARY:Juan De Marcos & The Afro-Cuban All Stars
DESCRIPTION:Afro-Cuban All Stars is a unique orchestra devoted to promoting the full range of Cuban music\, one that embraces several generations and all musical styles. Over the years many of the band’s musicians have become international stars\, including such brilliant performers as Rubén González\, Ibrahim Ferrer\, Guillermo Rubalcaba\, Amadito Valdés and Manuel “The Guajiro” Mirabal. Led by Juan de Marcos\, the project was born as a result of his work with the acclaimed Cuban “son” band Sierra Maestra. Receiving the go-ahead from World Music Records president Nick Gol\, to produce an album celebrating the classic Cuban sound of the ‘50s featuring a multigenerational group of musicians\, Juan de Marcos recorded A toda Cuba le gusta in 2006 featuring nearly 60 performers. Then\, alongside American guitarist Ry Cooder\, he produced the first Buena Vista Social Club album. And the rest\, as they say\, is history. After several years of success – including four Grammy nominations\, being the subject of several documentaries and films\, and recipients of many other distinctions – the Afro-Cuban All Stars is today\, alongside Los Van Van and Irakere\, one of the best-known and most successful Cuban orchestras in the world.
