Wine and appetizers will be served. LIMITED to 100 Spots. \nTime and location: 6:00 – 8:30 PM\, Fri\, Feb 9th\, 2024\, Heritage Museum of Asian Art \nAdmission: Members – Free | Non-Members – $25 \nAbout the Exhibition: \nThe dragon has captivated the Asian continent for thousands of years. This exhibition explores the representation of the dragon over the span of a millennium and three Asian countries. It demonstrates how the form and function of dragon imagery have drastically evolved over the centuries.  \nIn this exhibition\, we see the image of the dragon on a Japanese enamel cigarette case; a dragon intertwines itself on the base of a silver champagne holder from the Mandarin Hotel; a child’s LEGO toy is built in the form of a mythical dragon. The dragon is found on a household trivet from China and even on postage stamps. \nAbout the Performance: \nHeritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with our 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation and performance series called If the Sky Could Dream. Coinciding with the Lunar Year of the Dragon\, the museum will showcase dragon artworks from throughout Asia\, as well as include an original\, contemporary vision of the dragon from an Asian American perspective by Hsiao. \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. The dragon is emblematic of China and also a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures. The dragon thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, power\, and intrigue in many communities. Because the Chinese dragon is a water deity\, the installation inside the museum will incorporate images and projections of water\, weather\, and local bodies of water\, including the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street.

DESCRIPTION:Bending Light transcends the conventional use of colors within painting and delves into a realm where colors cease to merely reflect what our eyes perceive\, but rather echo the sentiments of our hearts. Expressed in the works of six dynamic painters\, colors cease to be passive elements; they become an emotional call and response\, engaging beyond the confines of the canvas. Positive and negative spaces react differently\, to create a vibrant dialogue that transcends\, pushing all color theories to the edge. Through a meticulous play of colors\, improvisation\, storytelling\, and thoughtful composition\, each work\, regardless of style\, serves as a conduit for emotions and thoughts\, encouraging viewers to delve deeper into their own introspection.   \nEchoing curator and artist Paul Branton\, What does it truly mean to be colored in America? This question approaches theories of color\, in relation to identity and the rich pigments found in nature; they serve as the palette for this artistic inquiry and the profound implications of this label. The artists explore its impact on Black identity\, potential\, and the intricate interplay between societal perceptions and individual existence.\nBeyond their aesthetic appeal\, the works are a celebration of the language of color\, offering a poignant exploration of the unique challenges\, triumphs\, and complexities of Black life. DESCRIPTION:South Asian filmmakers like Satyajit Ray\, Deepa Mehta\, Mrinal Sen\, Mira Nair\, and Ritwik Ghatak have made significant contributions to the development of cinema using the medium to tell authentic stories of South Asian communities and their relationship to various socio-political issues. However\, their contributions have always been overshadowed by the media hype surrounding Bollywood films. \nTo showcase the diversity of South Asian films\, South Asia Institute is launching “SAI Screening”\, a bi-monthly film screening series highlighting feature films and documentaries by South Asian filmmakers whose talents transcend cultures and boundaries. Their films are not only unique but also reflect different facets of South Asian culture and society. \nFor our first event\, we are screening “Indus Blues” (2019)\, an award-winning documentary directed and produced by Jawad Sharif. By taking this virtual tour of Midland\, Michigan\, you’ll learn about the impact of Alden B. Dow on modernist design with breathtaking examples from his home and studio. \nNever heard of architect Alden B. Dow? That’s not surprising. None of his designs are in Chicago or anywhere in Illinois. Yet\, he started designing modernist homes in the early 1930s before Mies van der Rohe came to the U.S. Dow was influenced by his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright and just as Frank Lloyd Wright did\, Dow’s Home and Studio expressed his design ideas. This presentation will showcase some of Dow’s residences in Midland\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. All tours depart from the reception desk\, and please be sure to arrive on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. SUMMARY:If the Sky Could Dream: Interactive Installation\, Performance\,  & Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation\, performance\, and workshop series called If the Sky Could Dream. Coinciding with the Lunar Year of the Dragon\, the museum will showcase dragon artworks from throughout Asia\, as well as include an original\, contemporary vision of the dragon from an Asian American perspective by Hsiao.\n​\nIf the Sky Could Dream combines drawing\, painting\, dance\, found materials and found spaces at the museum to reveal and celebrate the dragons among us—structural\, ancestral\, architectural\, internal\, and environmental.
