SUMMARY:Tragedy\, Comedy\, and Democracy at Ancient Athens
DESCRIPTION:Location: \n\n\nThe theater\, both comedy and tragedy\, began in Ancient Athens as part of the festival in honor of the god Dionysus. But theater also played an important role within Athenian democracy\, a place where the city’s troubles and conflicts could be played out at a safe distance. Learn more about the connection between theater and democracy in Ancient Athens in this NHM Discussion.

SUMMARY:Kulturküche: Bier-Rettich Class
DESCRIPTION:Radishes\, not just for Oktoberfest………. \nWhile radishes have roots beyond Southern Germany\,  Oktoberfest has inspired many to try white German “Bier-rettich”. \nRon Eberle grew up in Lincoln Square and attended St. Matthias School.  Son of a German immigrant from Bavaria.  He was first introduced to spiraled white radishes by his Opa during visits to America in the 1970s. Since that first introduction in the backyard of his childhood home on Hamilton Street\, Ron has shared his family’s recipe for preparing white radishes with many friends\, always to the same delight and surprise.  Come learn how to make this salad garnish the main event for a refreshing snack with a beer and pretzel.   \nFee: We are pleased to offer a discounted rate for Friends of the DANK Haus (What’s this?)

SUMMARY:Awi’nakola: Regenerating Land and Culture
DESCRIPTION:“Awi’nakola” (ah-weet-nah-kyo-lah) means “We are one with the land and the sea.” It is also the name for a foundation started by a group of Indigenous knowledge keepers\, scientists\, and artists working together to find effective responses to the climate crisis and to educate others through the process. \nJoin us for an introduction to Awi’nakola’s work in British Columbia from founder Rande Cook\, artist and hereditary chief of the Ma’amtagila First Nation\, followed by lunch and small-group conversation at which we will ask\, How does the notion of “regenerating land and culture” resonate in Chicago? To close\, Lindsay Delaronde (Kanienke’haka) will lead a social dance. \nThis program is part of the Awi’nakola artists’ week-long visit to Chicago to connect\, share ideas\, and plant seeds toward future collaborations. The Awi’nakola art team consists of artists Rande Cook (Ma’amtagila)\, Lindsay Delaronde (Kanienke’haka)\, Kelly Richardson\, and Paul Walde—all based on Vancouver Island\, British Columbia—and Chicago-based curator Stephanie Smith. \nCo-sponsored by the University of Chicago’s Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry; Office of the Provost; Department of Race\, Diaspora\, and Indigeneity; and Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society; and by the Center for Native Futures. Additional support for the Awi’nakola artists’ visit is provided by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Watershed: Art + Ecology.

SUMMARY:Walk Like a Preservationist
DESCRIPTION:How can you look at an historic building and know that it should be preserved or landmarked? Join Adam Rubin\, CAC Director of Interpretation\, and member of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks\, and learn what to look for to determine if a building qualifies for preservation designation. \nChicago’s historic resources lend our city its unique sense of place. But what does it take to legally ensure a building’s protection? How are historic construction materials cared for differently than newer materials? And what will we need to do differently to protect a newer and expanded class of culturally significant sites as they become “historic”? \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nThis outdoor program will focus on sites near the CAC and the Chicago River and will involve walking less than a mile. The program will begin and end at the CAC. \nPROGRAM SPEAKER: ADAM RUBIN\n \nAdam Rubin is an architectural historian and has worked as a researcher\, writer and preservation educator in cities across the country. He currently serves as Director of Interpretation at the Chicago Architecture Center. Prior to assuming this position\, Adam contributed work to an historic resources study of properties along Chicago’s North Lake Shore Drive\, with an emphasis on the documentation of Modernist residential high-rises along the lakefront. Previously\, Adam has developed and led public education initiatives and outreach programs focused on historic resources and landscapes at Docomomo US\, Landmark West\, the Brooklyn Historical Society and the Los Angeles Conservancy.
