SUMMARY:The First Black Archaeologist: John Wesley Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:Join NHM Online Discussions for an extraordinary evening with Professor John W.I. Lee from UC Santa Barbara as we delve into his groundbreaking biography\, “The First Black Archaeologist: A Life of John Wesley Gilbert” (Oxford University Press 2022). \nJohn Wesley Gilbert\, born enslaved in Hephzibah\, Georgia\, during the American Civil War\, went on to become one of the first ten Black students admitted to Brown University in Classics. His educational journey continued with a scholarship to study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens\, Greece\, where he became the first African-American to attend. Gilbert’s contributions include his 1891 Master’s thesis\, “The Demes of Attica\,” and his pioneering role as the first Black faculty member at Paine College\, where he taught Greek and Latin.\nIn this special discussion\, Professor Lee offers unique insights into the life of this extraordinary scholar and Philhellene. Don’t miss this important exploration. \nAbout John W.I. Lee:\nJohn W.I. Lee is a Professor of History at UC Santa Barbara. With a background shaped by Asia and Hawai’i\, he holds a PhD in History from Cornell University. His publications include “A Greek Army on the March: Soldiers and Survival in Xenophon’s Anabasis” (Cambridge University Press 2007) and “The First Black Archaeologist: A Life of John Wesley Gilbert” (Oxford University Press 2022). Professor Lee has also participated in archaeological excavations in Greece. \nThe National Hellenic Museum gratefully acknowledges the Hellenic Foundation\, whose generous support makes our NHM Online Discussions possible.

SUMMARY:Arte de La Borinqueña - Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. The story emerged during a critical period for the Puerto Rican people\, marked by an economic crisis and natural disasters in the Caribbean. La Borinqueña has transcended fiction\, evolving into a philanthropic superhero movement with a collection of graphic novels\, a special benefit anthology with DC Comics titled Ricanstruction\, and noteworthy partnerships with NRDC\, Chocolate Cortés\, and others.

SUMMARY:Community Insights: Awareness and Well-Being in the South Asian Community
DESCRIPTION:In South Asian communities\, mental health issues are often swept under the rug. SUMMARY:Flamenco Festival: LAS MIGAS
DESCRIPTION:Las Migas first exploded on the flamenco scene 20 years ago in Barcelona as a singularly unique\, all-female and multinational quartet in an extremely male-dominated and insular genre. They have challenged stereotypes and flamenco traditions with astounding success over their long career and have evolved into a powerhouse of Flamenco fusion that has earned them many\nawards including a Latin Grammy nomination followed by a Latin Grammy award in 2022 for Libres. The current line-up\, all hailing from different regions of Spain\, include vocalist Carolina “La Chispa\,” guitarists Marta Robles and Alicia\nGrillo\, violinist Laura Pacios and special guest bassist Oriol Riart Laborda. After numerous tours in the U.S.\, Europe\, and Latin America\, audiences are finally offered an opportunity to see these Flamenco trailblazers in their Chicago debut!
