He is well known as an interpreter of the standard opera/oratorio repertoire\, as a concert singer\, and as a specialist in the performance of early music. DESCRIPTION:The Spotlight Series at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago is pleased to present UNITY\, Maggie Wong’s first solo exhibition in Chicago. \nThrough various manipulations of newsprint via sculptural and print interventions pulled from the artist’s collection of Unity Newspaper\, the show depicts a version of childcare that supported revolutionary action\, particularly the publishing of Unity by the League of Revolutionary Struggle\, a radical communist group that emerged in 1978 upon the merger between the August 29th Movement\, a Chicano revolutionary organization\, and I Wor Kuen\, an Asian American revolutionary organization\, both influenced by Mao and followed Marxist-Leninist thought. \nThis system is what raised the artist and countless other now-grown adults that now serves as a point of departure to feel through a movement as a mothering environment. \nAbout the Artist:\nMaggie Wong (b.1988\, Oakland\, CA) is a visual artist attuned to materiality and sculpture’s disciplinary capacity to shape social space. She creates multidisciplinary works that focus on care labor\, sentimentality\, and collectivity. As a teacher. Maggie is interested in the interplay between informal and experiential education amidst formal art ecologies. She holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She is currently the Educator-in-Residence at the Luminary\, and lecturer at SAIC. Her work has been shown at Mana Contemporary Chicago\, Comfort Station\, Annas Projects\, take care (LA)\, Temple Contemporary\, YBCA\, and 99cent Plus\, and has been written about in ArtForum and Sixty Inches from Center. Her writing has been published by Yale University Press\, Viral Ecologies\, and the Journal of Art Practice.

DESCRIPTION:For twenty years violinist/fiddler and composer Andrew Finn Magill has been pursuing parallel careers in traditional Irish music\, Brazilian choro\, jazz and American fiddle\, the result of many years living abroad and a childhood growing up at The Swannanoa Gathering in Asheville\, North Carolina.  He now takes his folk background and his exploration of  Brazilian music to create “uncharted territory for both the violin and Brazilian music.”(Bandsintown) \nAndrew  has performed with  top-notch  musicians from  grammy-nominees Trio Brasileiro to Rising Appalachia.  He has been featured on NPR\, MTV\, Avianca in-flight entertainment\, is a Fulbright Fellow\, 2019 North Carolina Arts Council Grant recipient for jazz composition and has over a million Spotify streams. \nHe has been an ambassador of Brazilian violin ever since and has founded many Brazilian music groups including O Finno\, Violino no Choro\, Brazilian Strings Trio (with fellow American violinist Ted Falcon and Brazilian guitarist Nando Duarte) and Canta\, Violino! the album of which was released on Ropeadope Records in 2018.

DESCRIPTION:Over 36 years ago members of the Irish American Community had a vision to create a place that would hold the spirit of the past\, the energy of the present and to keep their culture alive for the future. This non-for-profit organization brings the best in artistic avenues\, and arts are an important part of the Irish dialog. Register in advance here. \nJoin us as Joan DeJean and Jack McCord use maps from the Newberry collection to recreate the European settlement of the vast territory in North America that the French named Louisiana\, and to tell the story of one remarkable woman\, Marie Baron. \nOn February 27\, 1720\, Marie Baron and 95 other female inmates who had been serving time in a notorious Parisian prison were abandoned on an uninhabited island off the Gulf Coast. Most of the women had\, like Marie Baron\, been falsely charged with “public prostitution.” Those who survived their deportation on a ship named La Mutine\, “the Mutinous Woman\,” forged such remarkable lives that their impact on this country continues\, three centuries later. Their lives are recounted in Joan DeJean’s new book\, Mutinous Women: How French Convicts Became Founding Mothers of the Gulf Coast. \nIn Louisiana\, Marie Baron became a person of note and the wife of Jean François Dumont—a mapmaker responsible for many extraordinary maps in the Newberry collection. Dumont recorded events in Louisiana’s history that he himself had not witnessed but that his wife had\, embedding her perspective into his vision of the European settlement of North America. \nSigned copies of Joan DeJean’s book Mutinous Women are available for purchase online from the Newberry Bookshop. \nThis event is cosponsored by the Alliance Française de Chicago.

The artist’s activities to popularize the fashion design field and expand the range of expression through the development of convergent expression techniques of fashion illustration show the expansion of fashion artistry and the borderless development of the fashion industry. \nK-Fashion is expressed in various areas. In this work\, the artist expanded the artistic range of globalized K-Fashion and the experimental expression of ideas. In particular\, we want to show how quickly Korean fashion is permeating into global fashion through ‘Saekdong’\, a representative color and pattern of Korean traditional fashion. In addition\, by designing a part of Hangeul\, which is expressed in minimal ‘figure painting’\, along with ‘Saekdong’\, a traditional Korean stripe pattern\, it shows the refined and minimalism of K-Fashion in Korean colors. \nThe artist used hand stitches and hand drawings expressed on Korean traditional fabrics with handcrafted analog techniques\, that shows a convergence of expressions using digital programs together to emphasize formative characteristics. Through this\, a new direction of fashion illustration expression was created and the scope of research related to fashion illustration was expanded. It will also be a special exhibition that expands the realm of K-Fashion design expression suitable for use in the global fashion industry.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Tilling the Past
DESCRIPTION:Admission to the special exhibit is free on Sunday\, Feb. 26\, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nTilling the Past\nPhotography by Hilma Ljung\nBetween the years 1908 and the mid 1930’s armed with her 4×5 glass plate view camera\, Hilma Ljung photographed the lives and land that surrounded her and her family in the small village of Svalöv. In an era where photography was largely presided over by men\, Ljung shows us a mostly unseen perspective of rural Swedish life from the female’s point of view. Let us walk out of the darkroom and into the light to view Ljung’s pioneering photographs. \nThe land around Svalöv\, located in the southernmost region of Sweden\, is home to some of the country’s best soil and climate for farming; so much so that the Coat of Arms for the region is a farmer sowing seed. Wheat\, rye\, barley\, potatoes\, oat and flax were all grown for market\, with a vegetable garden\, and chickens\, for household use. A renowned dairy was eventually established on the property. Whey\, a by-product to the butter and milk production\, became feed for pig breeding\, an activity which won Hilma’s family considerable acclaim; the King himself once descending upon Svalöv to admire the breeding “sires and sow’s.” \nLjung’s photographs parallel famed Swedish painter Carl Larsson in that her love and passion for her family and home\, flow through her images with the same authentic pulse. Like Larsson who painted images of everyday activities\, Ljung also chronicled everyday life with a deep and genuine passion. She reveals her family’s favorite location to pick berries. She takes us to a lake where one of her sons is fishing. Her image of a beautiful sunny winter day creates a yearning for a fireplace and tea. \nPrior to 1903 when the invention of what we know today as film (gelatin silver negative)\, photographic emulsion was made on glass plates. There were two formats. The wet plate collodion\, discovered in 1851 by British inventor Frederick Scott Archer\, and the gelatin dry plate negative discovered in 1871 by Richard Leach Maddox. Both of these glass plate formats have a light sensitive emulsion that is attached to the glass plate with a binder. One of the main reasons glass plate negatives mostly disappeared from the consumer market was because of the introduction of the much more user friendly\, less fragile gelatin silver negative on celluloid roll film. Hilma photographed with gelatin dry plate glass negatives. \nThere is a beautiful and authentic simplicity attached to this story. A loving mother\, a devoted wife\, chronicling the life that surrounded her. People are drawn to the past. Ljung’s images are windows revealing a life that was\, tilling the past of people’s lives. \nLike summiting a mountain\, Hilma has given us a new vantage point. One that helps us viewers see the history of photography through an exciting and unfamiliar lens. Thank you\, Hilma\, for sharing with us your perspective of the world you lived in.

DESCRIPTION:Join SSCAC Archives and Collections Manager LaMar Gayles Jr. for an afternoon exploring mixed media art\, our collections\, and adornment objects from his personal collection. \n  \n  \n \n  \n\n\n\n\nIn this participatory program\, join SSCAC Collections and Archives Manager LaMar Gayles in exploring examples of adornment and mixed media objects from the archives of the South Side Community Art Center and his personal collection.\n  \nThis will be a unique opportunity for attendees to explore objects with connections to the history of the Center\, how these objects have been made\, how these works have aged over time\, and thinking through the sociocultural materiality of these objects. Participants will have an opportunity to hold and interact with objects\, be introduced  to art material behaviors as well as preventive conservation practices that can better preserve these works for the future.\n  \nThis program will be small and intimate with an attendance cap at 25 participants total\, please RSVP in advance.

DESCRIPTION:Free (with a suggested donation of $10 at the door).\nReservations are strongly recommended!\nCo-presented with the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center. \nSaturday\, February 11th – 8:00 PM \nOlga Cerpa is the most important female voice of the Canary Islands. Nominated for two Latin Grammys\, she has shared the stage with such artists as Omara Portuondo and Joan Manuel Serrat\, among others. Cerpa and Mestisay use “Jallo\,” an insular word that refers to the objects that the sea throws to the Canary shores\, to create splendid songs inspired by the musical influences that reach the beaches of their native land. Latin America\, Portugal\, Cape Verde and the African continent leave their mark as they revisit island songs that have been “found” in these years of musical journeys and that they rediscover for themselves and their audience through original arrangements. Olga Cerpa y Mestisay will be presenting their latest production\, Palosanto\, where they invited 17 renowned guitarists from around the world to record with them. \nCanary Islands and Puerto Rico \nThe commonalities between Canarios and Boricuas have intrigued generations of islanders from both sides of the Atlantic for decades. Probably the most evident similarity between the smallest of the Greater Antilles and the southernmost archipiélago in Spain is found in the language. However\, the strong connection between these two cultures goes beyond the Caribbean Spanish accent\, and can also be seen in its music\, aboriginal roots\, and profound ties to the African continent. Join us as we celebrate the music of the Canary Island and Puerto Rico in this special co-production of the International Latino Cultural Center and Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center.
