Our special guest\, Khitam Masoud\, will sit down with MALA Co-Founder Zainab Khan to discuss her journey in philanthropy and social enterprise and share advice for other women navigating these fields.\n_______________\nAbout Khit:\nKhit is a first-generation Palestinian female immigrant born and raised in Northern California. At the age of 16\, she was emancipated by the Sacramento Courts as she avoided an arranged marriage to her first cousin. Khit has been on her own ever since with no relationship with her family or relatives since 1998.\n\nWorking multiple jobs at a time to provide for herself\, she has been trying to complete her first Bachelor’s degree since she graduated high school in 1999. Life lessons including; fighting cancer on her own\, managing mental health and disorders such as PTSD\, anxiety\, ADHD\, and depression\, and surviving through abusive relationships and sex crimes\, has made it very difficult in maintaining a 2.0 or higher G.P.A to complete a college education as a non-traditional adult student.\n\nAfter surviving cancer in 2007\, Khit moved to Chicago where she then learned more about how to get involved with not-for-profit organizations. For the past 6 years\, she has been volunteering and working at Chicago-based organizations including Imerman Angels\, a 1-on-1 cancer support organization\, as a Mentor. Angel. Khit has gained an overwhelming amount of experience and skills thanks to non-profit professionals in her life that have become some of her most trusted mentors today. Her passion for philanthropy and making an impact on women like her\, became the impetus for starting her own charity\, Blessons for Women (Blessons\, NFP). With more than 200 speaking engagements under her belt\, she has learned how to cultivate relationships within the Chicago community and beyond

SUMMARY:Online Program - Breaking the Silence: Native American Boarding Schools
DESCRIPTION:Between 1869 and the 1960s\, hundreds of thousands of Native American children were forcibly abducted from their homes and families and placed in more than 350 government-funded\, and often church-run\, Indian Boarding schools. These children were subjected to horrendous conditions\, suffering physical\, sexual\, cultural\, and spiritual abuse and torture. \nThey were banned from speaking their Native languages\, from traditional and cultural practices\, and stripped of traditional clothing\, hair\, and personal belongings. The express intent was to implement cultural genocide through removal and “reprogramming” Native children to carry out systematic destruction of Native cultures and communities. Many of these children never returned home\, and their fates have yet to be accounted for by the U.S. government. \nJoin us for a poignant conversation with Dr. Samuel Torres\, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS)\, as he highlights and addresses the history and ongoing trauma created by the U.S. Indian Boarding School Policy. \nTorres is expected to be accompanied by a boarding school survivor. There will be opportunities for questions after the discussion. \nReservations required.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception of “Priscilla Kar Yee Lo: Aiming to Please”
DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to announce the third exhibition of the Spotlight Series\, featuring glass artist Priscilla Kar Yee Lo. Please join us on Saturday\, July 16\, from 3:00-6:00pm CT for the opening reception. This exhibition will run from July 16 through August 28. \nRSVP here. \nThe Spotlight Series is a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago. \nAbout the artist:\nAs a child of a Chinese immigrant family in North America\, Priscilla was perpetually reminded to be practical about her future. But after over a decade as a health care professional\, she began to feel dissatisfied with the direction of her life. Priscilla turned to creative outlets to find a voice and to explore her identity as a woman of color. She was drawn to glass because it is inherently paradoxical\, constantly in a state of fragility and permanency. She returned to school in 2015 to pursue a Bachelor’s in Craft and Design from Sheridan College and completed her Master of Fine Arts at Illinois State University in 2022. \nPriscilla uses glass and other media to create work as an act of remembrance of the collective intersectional adversity minority women continue to face. Her work highlights the astute way in which our inherent patriarchal society has affected the Asian female position within its structure and how it maintains control through cultural and social expectations and normalized gender roles. Priscilla employs visual language containing artifacts of patriarchy from her childhood that have since become pop culture icons. The symbolism of these images is far removed from their original medium and their patriarchal foundation\, making them easy to manipulate and go undetected while subtly reinforcing social norms and binary systems. Ultimately\, Priscilla views her work as a nostalgic and whimsical\, yet mischievous way of documenting where women\, particularly immigrant women\, are placed within a societally prescribed racial framework. She hopes to initiate discourse about this reality to validate our collective experiences and raise awareness to the continual existence of these issues.

DESCRIPTION:Dance Styles of Palenque \nTraditional Dance \nDance in San Basilio de Palenque is an artistic and cultural activity where the people of Palenque express feelings emotions and basic sentiments of everyday life. \nThemes and styles covered: \nA brief explanation of the traditional dance \nStyles of dance: \n\nEl Mapale\nCumbia\nCulebra\nCatalina\nEl pavo\n\nThe traditional dance can be seen in two ways: \n1. Dance as celebration \n2. Dance as pain/mourning \nDance as celebration are those dances that constitute different styles and movements filled with limitless energy. Individual expression (pases) or as couples. \nThese include mapale\, cumbia\, culebra\, catalina and pavo. \nDance as pain carry movements and melancholic “tones”. These are dances that demonstrate the crucial importance of women and of grandmothers. The dances are ritual-based\, specifically rituals of collective mourning. These dances also exhibit the most authentic expression of religion\, oral tradition and of the “kuagros” or familial groups of Palenque. \nAbout Kombilesa Mi \nKombilesa Mi from San Basilio de Palenque was born in 2011 as a musical concept that fuses Hip Hop with traditional rhythms such as the sexteto\, pavo\, bullerengue and chalusonga\, among others) safeguarding the “palenquero” language and using typical instruments from the region\, contributing new sounds to the rich history of Afro-Colombian music.

DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Germany\, Anke Fachmann was influenced by remarkable artist movements such as The Bridge (Die Brücke) and The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter). A passion for art\, culture\, and design led her to initially study graphic design. She received a Bachelors in Graphic Design at the Freie Hochschule für Grafik-Design & Bildende Kunst in Freiburg\, Southern Germany. She then came to the US to pursue a graphic design career. Soon\, Fachmann’s focus changed and she rediscovered her passion for fine art. \nColor and structure are her tools to tell stories\, ​to leave room for the imagination. She paints with her fingers as well as with recycled materials such as paper and coffee sleeves to give her artwork an unique expression. \nAnke Fachmann on her technique and subject matter: \n“One day I worked on a big canvas using brushes. This felt tiring\, so I started to dip my hands and fingers into the paint. Over time\, I explored painting with recycled materials such as straws\, sponges\, and the paper sleeves from to-go coffee cups. Friends started saving the coffee sleeves for me and I think that is not a bad idea when it comes to recycling and our beloved planet!” \n“After experimenting with mixed media and abstract work\, I started to paint animals\, learning more and more about endangered species through this media. I decided to focus on them\, with the hope to prompt curiosity and to showcase their beauty and uniqueness.” \nFachmann uses her art to create awareness and to work together with environmental organizations and activists whenever she can. She lives in San Francisco. \nThis exhibition opens with a reception on Friday\, July 15\, from 6:00 to 9:00pm. The exhibition runs through Friday\, August 19. Treshawn Williamson exploring sculpture\, self-imaging and history through postcolonial lenses\, collective & individual recollection and peculiar materialism. Their use of storytelling holds significance for spatiality and locality to become common ground through the fielding of land\, labor and industry. \nAjmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar expands the sculptural form welding metal\, Trinidadian carnival culture and identity politics alongside the African diaspora. Lola Ayisha Ogbara merges West African and African American interior design aesthetics with bodily sculptural ceramic forms\, with performative photography – that rest and refuse a Western gaze. \nR. Treshawn Williamson creates historical context for his own familial roots in the mining of charcoal material for large scale screen-printed tapestries in a careful consideration of laborious processes as praxis. Millar\, Ogbara and Williamson engage in practices that consider topographic timelines and performance as an essential tool making for an interesting dialogue about homeplace.

We invite you to this in-person conversation and Q&A to celebrate Sayet’s work and the production of her solo play\, Where We Belong\, now showing at the Goodman Theatre as part of a national tour presented by the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in association with the Folger Shakespeare Library.   \nWhere We Belong\, at the Goodman Theatre through July 24\, 2022\, is a personal story of an Indigenous theatre-maker’s journey across geographic borders\, personal history\, and cultural legacies; in search of a place to belong. Sayet’s autobiographical account in Where We Belong shares her experience pursuing a Ph.D. in Shakespeare in England. There she finds a country that refuses to acknowledge its role in colonialism while echoing a journey to England braved by Native ancestors in the 1700s following treatise betrayals\, forcing us to consider what it means to belong in an increasingly globalized world.  \nThis intimate conversation with Sayet is free for Mitchell Museum Members and $10 for non-members. DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is organizing the 22nd edition of its signature festival called BARRIO ARTS FEST! This yearly summer event brings together a selection of local artists\, merchants\, craft makers\, food vendors\, dancers\, and music performers and family workshop activities for the community to enjoy.\n\nDuring the weekend of July 9th and 10th\, the museum will turn into a family gathering space that extends through the museum premises\, including the museum facility keeping the galleries open as well.\n\nJoin us in celebrating the journey of our Museum\, our beautiful Puerto Rican Arts and Culture and our vibrant community here in Humboldt Park\, Chicago.\nFestival Hours: Saturday\, July 09\, 2022 10 am-6 pm and Sunday\, July 10\, 2022 11 am-5 pm.\nEvery year Barrio Arts Fest\, in addition to the artists/vendors\, offers workshops for the entire family.
