SUMMARY:Swedish Folk Art Family Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join art professor Alison Aune in a Swedish folk art Family workshop. Alison will lead participants in creating Fantastical Kurbits. Alison will give a brief gallery tour to share the background of Dalmålning\, also known as kurbits painting or Dala painting\, which flourished in Sweden in the 18th and 19th centuries. The kurbit was a fantastical gourd plant commonly used in folk paintings in Dalarna Sweden\, as a symbol of good luck. After the gallery tour\, participants will create their own creative kurbit interpretations as we revive the tradition using a contemporary color palette. \nFee: $20 members\, $25 everyone else. All participants will create and take home their own kurbits folk art painting\, as well as a coloring book made specifically for this workshop. We will be using acrylic paints\, so this workshop is not suitable for preschool-age children.

DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to host two free public programs for the Spotlight Series exhibition Yuge Zhou: Moon Drawings. The first of these programs is a poetry session in collaboration with the Chicago Poetry Center on Saturday\, September 10\, from 12pm-1pm CT\, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn (Moon) Festival. The poetry session will start with a poetry performance by Lisa Low followed by an ekphrastic workshop with participants create and share their poems in response to the themes of the exhibition.\n\nRegister here\n\nAbout the poet\nLisa Low is a poet and essayist from Maryland. Her poems appear or are forthcoming in Copper Nickel\, Ecotone\, The Massachusetts Review\, Poetry\, The Southern Review\, and elsewhere\, and her essay “How to Apologize” won the 2020 Gulf Coast Nonfiction Prize. She earned an MFA from Indiana University and a PhD in creative writing and literature from the University of Cincinnati\, where she served as associate editor at The Cincinnati Review. Her debut chapbook\, Crown for the Girl Inside\, won the 2020 Vinyl 45 Chapbook Contest and is forthcoming from YesYes Books.

Treshawn Williamson & Lola Ayisha Ogbara\, with special guest artist Jada-Amina. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nBorrowed from Lola Ayisha Ogbara’s video work ‘Bound For Glory’ from her continuing series The Perfect Servant\, THE GESTURE ITSELF IS PROTECTION SPELL proposes questions of the body\, disruption\, labor\, acts of looking\, and materiality through movement\, sound\, and mythmaking. \nWilliamson\, Ogbara\, and Amina engage in multidisciplinary practices that reference homeplace\, memory\, and the “gaze” that take place across photography\, video\, sculpture\, sound\, and printmaking. \nTHE GESTURE ITSELF IS PROTECTION SPELL will feature a collaborative live sound activation by R. Treshawn Williamson and Jada-Amina followed by Lola Ayisha Ogbara’s video work ‘Bound For Glory’\, in which Ogbara uses Chicago’s labor intensive history\, centralizing Black women domestic workers\, to envision a radical future for Black lives. Ogbara finds an additional dialogue between sculpture and experimental photography that challenges our relationship to viewership. Ogbara questions\, “What lengths are we willing to go to in order to protect what is rightfully ours?” as she begins to imagine a collective disruption in the way we use our bodies to perform artistic labor. \nIn the same ways Ogbara imagines collective disruption and Black women’s labor \, R. Treshawn Williamson and Jada-Amina also explore the Black maternal and cultural re-imagination through sound mixing and oral histories\, through what Amina describes as “a sonic meditation grounded in incantation and afro-sentimentality…” \nThis program is the final program related to our current exhibition “…of the land: acts of refusal and ratification” \, which features new and recent works from Chicago-based artists Ajmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar\, Lola Ayisha Ogbara\, and R. DESCRIPTION:Balzekas Museum welcomes the Kalnas Ensemble string quartet featuring original compositions inspired by ancient Lithuanian folk music \n\n\n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, Sept. 17\, 2022\, the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture welcomes the Kalnas Ensemble to Chicago for what promises to be a memorable concert and exploration of the origins of Lithuanian music. “Kalnas” means “hill” in Lithuania and points to the group’s ethnographic and geographic origins. For the past 150 years\, the hills of Pennsylvania have been home to many Lithuanian immigrants and their descendants\, who settled the region\, worked in the region’s coal mines\, and passed down their deep love of traditional Lithuanian music. Founded by Composer\, Educator\, and Violinist Dr. Stanley Chepaitis\, the string quartet’s repertoire will include Chepaitis’s original compositions inspired by ancient Lithuanian traditional plyphonic folk songs called “sutartinės.” Everyone is welcome to attend. \nTime: Reception at 6PM – Concert at 7PM \nLocation: Amber Ball Room\, Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture\, 6500 S. For this program\, the Kalnas Ensemble will initiate the audience into the unique ethos of Lithuanian traditional music through discussions and demonstrations of its stories\, melodies\, and rhythms as envisioned in Dr. Stanley Chepaitis’ original works.Chepaitis dives deeply into his own Lithuanian heritage\, and into the heart of the songs\, stories\, and dances which form the basis and inspiration for the music he creates. From the ancient Sutartinės\, which come out of northeastern Lithuania\, to more recent folk songs from around the country\, this music paints a picture of ancient and medieval Lithuanian life in its focus on nature and the cycles of life. The string quartet’s voices represent a search for the timeless Lithuanian soul and an attempt to bring that soul to modern ears. DESCRIPTION:Bestselling illustrator Nikkolas Smith hosts a Kids & Family Workshop on creating art that aligns with and highlights activism. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nNikkolas Smith\, Artivist and #1 New York Times Bestselling illustrator\, will show you how to become an Artivist. Do you have something you want to better or change in your community or in the world? How can art inspire you to change the world for the better? How can art help you to be fearless and speak up? With Nikkolas’ guidance\, attendees of this workshop will create their own Artivism piece and be a part of the Artivist movement. This workshop is geared to artists of all ages\, especially kids and families. Nikkolas will sign books and merchandise following the workshop. \nAttendees are encouraged to bring whatever materials they are most comfortable creating art with. The American Writers Museum will provide paper and drawing materials like colored pencils\, but if you prefer to create digital art you must bring your own computers\, tablets\, etc. \nThis special program is presented in conjunction with our forthcoming exhibit and education initiative Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice\, opening September 2022. Dark Testament explores racial injustice in America through the work of Black American writers from the end of the Civil War through the Civil Rights Movement\, and the impact these writers continue to have on contemporary writers\, creators\, and activists.

During his studies at the Conservatory (Academy of Music) at Prague he was taking part in Prague’s Philharmonic choir and realized in our country and even overseas a few projects within the group „Martinů Voices“ under the leadership of Lukáš Vasílek. In the years 2015-2017 he studied singing at the Musical Faculty JAMU in Brno. He participated in the National Theatre at Prague on programs „Opera nás baví“ (We enjoy the Opera) and also participated on programs of the Prague’s Madrigalists and with the German Baroque ensemble „Hoffkapele Schloss Seehaus“\, also with the baroque group Victoria. He also participated in the Prague’s Opera studio with Jiřina Marková – Krystlíková. He participated in the masterclass of the Norwegian Musical Academy in Oslo and co-operates with the German tenorist and cembalist Johannes Weiss. In recent years he had several performances in Japan and Brazil. In 2022 he will introduce himself for the first time to the audiences in the USA. He is working his way up. Do a musical career concentrating on areas of romanticism and classicism and also that of the Baroque. He plays piano since childhood and accompanies on concerts his friends and himself. He is one of the great Czech talents and presents an artistic face of the town of Nepomuk for the celebrations of St. John of Nepomuk’s beatification (2021) and his sanctification (2029).\n\nThe Musician Ricardo Itaborahy\nHe is these days one of the prominent artists of the new generation of Brazilian pianists and plays with great names in Brazilian popular music like Milton Nascimento\, Wagner Tido\, Toninho Horta\, João Bosco or he American guitarist Stanley Jordan. He is part of the jazz trio of Dudu Lima from Minas Gerais Region with whom he took in 2018 a trip through Europe. Czech Republic\, Italy and Belgium. He also cooperates with the famous Brazilian musician Emmerson Nogueira. As a Christian he has strong relationship with the sacred Catholic music\, he is musically active in liturgical celebrations of his archdiocese and participated on the musical production and presentation with great Brazilian Catholic artists responsible for the musical „Show for Life“ produced at the occasion od Pope Francis’s visit to Brazil in 2013. Ricardo is a self-taught artist. He learnt to play piano with his grandfather mister Neném Itaborahy. He pursued his studies of music in Centro Ian Guest de Aprofundamento Musical in Rio de Janeiro and the music school Centro Cultural Pró-Música UFJF in the town Juiz de Fora.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Nostalgia for My Island
DESCRIPTION:Nostalgia for My Island: Puerto Rican Paintings from the Museo de Arte de Ponce. \nThe National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture is excited to partner with the world-renowned fine arts museum\, The Museo de Arte de Ponce (El Museo)\, to present a unique exhibit of Puerto Rican paintings on the U.S. mainland. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition\, entitled “Nostalgia for My Island: Painting from the Museo de Arte de Ponce 1786-1809.” The curated collection of twenty paintings includes original works by prominent Puerto Rican artists Jose Campeche (1751-1809) and Francisco Oller (1833-1917). The paintings in this exhibit have never before traveled outside Puerto Rico. \nJose Campeche\, the son of a slave\, is described by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art as “the most significant Puerto Rican painter of portraits and religious imagery.” Francisco Oller has been called “a Realist-Impressionist” and is considered the only Latin American painter to play a role in the development of Impressionism. In the early 1980s\, El Museo located and restored many of his works\, which had deteriorated in the tropical climate. The exhibit will coincide with the five-year commemoration of Hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico and The Museo de Arte de Ponce on September 20\, 2017. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n
