SUMMARY:2023 Tea Series: Tea with Queen Victoria

She was also a real woman with a life and love that transcends the era named for her.\nWell known Chicago performer Ellie of ElliePresents brings Victoria to you\, along with her favorite snack\, Brussels biscuits. Come and have a cup of tea with The Queen. You might even get to ask her a question\, as long as you are not a reporter.\nEllie enjoys bringing the Queen to audiences as she would have been in 1876\, just when America was celebrating the centennial of its dependence from her ancestors. Saturday\, February 25th at 11:00am. Tickets are $30 for adults\, $15 for children 12 years and under\, and must be purchased by Wednesday\, February 22nd. SUMMARY:Bomba Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to collaborate with AfriCaribe in hosting a free Bomba Workshop. \nBomba is an essential expression of Puerto Rican Culture; it’s not just something you listen to\, you feel it! Come learn the history\, participate in the movements and experience Bomba at another level. \nBomba was brought to Puerto Rico by enslaved ancestors hundreds of years ago\, most of the Island’s cultural expressions evolve from it. The music can be an upbeat holandé\, which is played and danced with great enthusiasm or a yubá\, which is more somber and spiritual. It was the enslaved Africans’ method of expressing themselves and\, although it originated in Puerto Rico\, it echoes across the Caribbean. The songs\, many of which are still sung today\, showcased the lamento among the sugarcane plantation workers\, who bared their collective souls during gatherings. \nAfriCaribe was created in 2000 by Evaristo “Tito” Rodriguez to provide Chicago with a means to celebrate the African influence in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean lands. \nThis is a family friendly event. Registration is required.

SUMMARY:The Six Movie Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Join us for viewing of “The Six”\, the movie will be followed by Q&A session with “The Six” co-creator\, Steven Schwankert\, the co-creator and lead researcher of The Six\, a book and documentary film project revealing the story of RMS Titanic’s Chinese passengers.\nMovie Description\nWhen RMS Titanic sank on a cold night in 1912\, barely 700 people escaped with their lives. Among them were six Chinese men. Arriving in New York with the other survivors\, the six were met not with compassion\, but suspicion and slander. Less than 24 hours later\, they were expelled from the country and vanished. What became of them\, and why did they disappear so completely? In an epic journey that crosses continents\, an international team of investigators sets out to uncover the truth about the six Chinese\, and to right a century-old injustice. For the first time\, we discover who these men really were\, tracing their origins and tracking down descendants denied access to their history. “The Six” is an extraordinary story of survival and dignity in the face of racism and anti-immigrant policy that still reverberates today. \nTO MEMBERS\n\n  \nMembers Tickets are FREE \n***please lookout for an upcoming email that will include your promocode to redeem your free ticket***

SUMMARY:Wagner's Nightmare: A Piano & Violin Recital
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, February 25th for Wagner’s Nightmare. Wagner’s Nightmare is a tongue-in-cheek send-up to the most controversial and influential artist of all time\, Richard Wagner. It’s culmination is here\, in an album of music Wagner would not like. \nFor better or for worse\, incendiary opinions\, vitriolic identity politics\, and polarizing depictions of national identity are some of the most prevalent themes in today’s discourse. Whether we are enthralled by this mania or exhausted by it\, we cannot escape it. In this emaciated public landscape\, depleted of empathy and nuance\, artists are in a unique position to comment both as insiders and observers to this arena. \nWith this in mind\, we are proud to present this recital tour as the culmination of a nearly two year project in which we reveled in one of classical music’s most incendiary\, vitriolic\, and polarizing figures: Richard Wagner. The man and his music are iconic\, absurd\, and influential…and so are the controversies and outrage that have surrounded him since he set pen to paper. Through essays\, podcasts\, videos on special themes\, and a full length album (released on February 16\, 2023) Wagner’s Nightmare explores in a light-hearted manner\, the reasons why Wagner is so widely admired and roundly derided. There is one theme which unites all these varied activities: whatever we do somehow always circles around a something Wagner famously hated. \nWe hope that by approaching Wagner with equal amounts of praise and pot-shots\, respect and ridicule\, sincerity and satire\, our audiences will reflect on how they themselves regard today’s polarizing\, overwrought\, and sometimes absurd social climate. \nMusical Program will Include: \nMusic by…Johannes Brahms\, Richard Wagner\, Franz Liszt\, Erik Satie…and more! \nDaniel Orsen is a violist in the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, prior to which he freelanced in Boston where he performed with A Far Cry\, the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, Fermata Chamber Soloists\, and the Phoenix Chamber Orchestra\, and was the artistic dire ctor of Jamaica Plain Chamber Music. Daniel has performed Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, and appeared as soloist with the Fermata Chamber Soloists and Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble. His festival credits include Krzyzowa\, Ravinia\, Prussia Cove\, Verbier\, and the Perlman Music Program. Daniel has an interest in cultural and intellectual history\, which is manifesting itself here\, in Wagner’s Nightmare. His writing has also been published in The Anglican Way and The Journal of the American Viola Society.  \nDaniel is a native of Pittsburgh\, PA. He was taught and mentored by members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, Credo\, and the Perlman Music Program before his Conservatory with Kim Kashkashian. He plays on a 2013 Philip Injeian viola and a 2014 Benoit Rolland bow\, both specially made for him. \nWith regular engagements in festivals\, concert series\, and competitions in both Europe and the United States\, French-American pianist Pierre-Nicolas Colombat has been recognized by audiences and international juries alike for his collaborative artistry. After publishing his doctoral dissertation (Boston University)\, he moved to Basel\, Switzerland to continue his studies with Jan Schutsz. Through his work as a concert organizer\, writer\, and performer Colombat actively seeks out creative ways to bring the living heritage of classical music into the 21st century. His main duo partners include Daniel Orsen (violist)\, Kathrin Hottiger (soprano)\, and Vinicius Costa (bass-baritone). \nCost: \nFriends of DANK Haus (what is this?): $15\nGeneral Public: $20 \nPlease Note: Free parking is located at 5/3 Bank located at Western and Gunnison Avenue.

SUMMARY:Juan De Marcos & The Afro-Cuban All Stars
DESCRIPTION:Afro-Cuban All Stars is a unique orchestra devoted to promoting the full range of Cuban music\, one that embraces several generations and all musical styles. Over the years many of the band’s musicians have become international stars\, including such brilliant performers as Rubén González\, Ibrahim Ferrer\, Guillermo Rubalcaba\, Amadito Valdés and Manuel “The Guajiro” Mirabal. Led by Juan de Marcos\, the project was born as a result of his work with the acclaimed Cuban “son” band Sierra Maestra. Receiving the go-ahead from World Music Records president Nick Gol\, to produce an album celebrating the classic Cuban sound of the ‘50s featuring a multigenerational group of musicians\, Juan de Marcos recorded A toda Cuba le gusta in 2006 featuring nearly 60 performers. Then\, alongside American guitarist Ry Cooder\, he produced the first Buena Vista Social Club album. And the rest\, as they say\, is history. After several years of success – including four Grammy nominations\, being the subject of several documentaries and films\, and recipients of many other distinctions – the Afro-Cuban All Stars is today\, alongside Los Van Van and Irakere\, one of the best-known and most successful Cuban orchestras in the world.

SUMMARY:Reel Film Club: Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:Chinese migrants Lei and Wong clandestinely arrive in Ecuador. Lei plans to travel all the way to New York; Wong wants to settle in Latin America and bring his son to live with him. Uncertain of their future\, they rely on other Chinese migrants to navigate this new land and culture. Chang\, a local mobster\, is one of those migrants; his intentions towards Lei are less than noble\, and as far as Wong is concerned\, he is nothing more than a fly entangled in Chang’s corrupt web. Ecuador’s official entry to the Academy Award for Best International Feature in 2021\, Venegas’ feature debut offers a unique take on the immigrant experience. \nLos inmigrantes chinos Lei y Wong llegan clandestinamente a Ecuador.
