SUMMARY:Balzekas Museum Award Dinner Honoring "Saulute" Sunlight Children's Aid"
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture honors exceptional individuals who\, through their talents\, efforts\, and achievements\, have distinguished themselves and contributed to the betterment of humanity. The Award is the highest and longest-standing civic honor of its kind outside of Lithuania. The roster of former honorees includes civic and cultural leaders\, physicians\, artists\, scholars\, diplomats\, and even two Lithuanian Presidents. \nThis year\, the Award of Excellence will be presented to the Illinois-based charity “Saulutė” ~ Sunlight Children’s Aid for Lithuania and posthumously to the organization’s founder\, Mrs. Indrė Tijūnėlis. Born from her initiative\, vision\, and resolve\, Sunlight Children’s Aid has brought light to hundreds of Lithuania’s neediest children and raised over $4 million dollars to date\, thanks to the volunteers and donors who lent a hand along the way. Now in its thirtieth year with the next generation of leaders at its helm\, Sunlight Children’s Aid continues to grow and expand its reach to ensure that all Lithuania’s children thrive and achieve their fullest potential. \nThe Award dinner\, which is also the Museum’s annual fundraiser\, is a long-standing tradition and a much-anticipated social event of the calendar year. This year’s attendees will get a ‘behind-the-scenes’ viewing of notable objects in the Museum’s collections including recently acquired paintings\, as well as photographs\, films\, and documents ‘rediscovered’ during our digitization process. \nPlease join us on Saturday\, December 3\, 2022\, at 6 p.m. at the Balzekas Museum\, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd.\, Chicago\, as we celebrate Sunlight Children’s Aid\, its late founder\, and the tradition of honoring and preserving excellence at the Museum. Tickets are $135 per person and $225 for Patron Donors. Black tie attire is optional. R.S.V.P. by November 22. Everyone is warmly invited to attend! \n

SUMMARY:South Side Season 3 Premiere Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us the evening of Tuesday\, December 6th at the DuSable Museum for a special advance screening of the season three premiere episode of HBO Max’s South Side. The screening will be followed by an intimate conversation with series co-creators\, executive producers\, directors\, writers and cast Bashir Salahuddin and Diallo Riddle\, moderated by WBEZ’s Reset host Sasha-Ann Simons. \n  \nShot on-location in Chicago\, South Side follows Simon (Sultan Salahuddin) and K (Kareme Young)\, two enterprising best friends ready to take over the world as they hustle and dream their way through the Windy City – when they’re not too busy working as furniture repo men at the local Rent-T-Own. Featuring cunning cop Turner (Chandra Russell) and her clueless partner Goodnight (Bashir Salahuddin)\, flailing local politician Allen Gayle (Diallo Riddle)\, aspiring singer Stacy (Zuri Salahuddin)\, and an ever-expanding crew of real-life Chicago residents\, the series offers a glimpse at what it’s like to live on the South Side with humor and heart. \nSouth Side season three premieres on HBO Max this December. The show is created by Bashir Salahuddin\, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin and produced by MTV Entertainment Studios. Bashir Salahuddin\, Diallo Riddle and Michael Blieden serve as executive producers. Tony Hernandez executive produces for JAX Media. We encourage you to arrive early. \n  \nBios – \n  \nBashir Salahuddin \nBashir Salahuddin is co-creator\, executive producer\, writer\, director and star of HBO Max’s comedy series South Side. And they’re just getting started… \n  \nIn addition to Sherman’s Showcase\, Riddle and Salahuddin created\, write and star in the HBO Max series South Side\, which is slated to debut season three this December. SUMMARY:The Greek Diner and the Making of American Cuisine
DESCRIPTION:In this hour-long class\, we will explore the history of the Greek diner and its profound influence on American food culture. On the eve of World War I\, Greek immigrants began buying up the diners abandoned by German Americans facing anti-German persecution brought on by the war. In these kitchens\, the new Greek owners would adapt traditional German travelers’ fare with a touch of the Mediterranean and a pinch of entrepreneurial spirit. The result: A truly American way of cooking and eating.
