SUMMARY:Art Deco Outside of the Loop
DESCRIPTION:A continuation of last year’s popular program that looked at Chicago Art Deco buildings outside of downtown. \nThis program explores the city’s far north and northwest sides and provides an in-depth look at a variety of Art Deco structures\, including both residential and commercial buildings\, as well as a college\, a bridge\, and a mausoleum. Some are well-preserved city landmarks; some sport bold polychromatic terra cotta facades\, the likes of which are not seen downtown. But all of them have striking geometric ornamentation that reflected the optimism and prosperity of the Roaring 20s and that is still eye-catching today. \nProgram Presenter: Bill Coffin \nBill Coffin is a former appellate attorney and adjunct professor of legal research and writing\, Bill Coffin became a CAC docent in 2004. He is the tour director for the CAC‘s two Art Deco walking tours and has presented lectures about Art Deco at the CAC and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute\, a program of Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies. He enjoys sharing photos of Art Deco buildings with friends from his travels to cities big and small all across the country.

SUMMARY:Palestinian Tatreez Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Through needle\, thread and color\, the art of Tatreez tells a story about the maker and history of their family. See Kaftans\, Thobes and Abayas that feature traditional patterns and embroidery brought out from our collection up-close during this event. \nThere will be a limited number of Tatreez kits to giveaway* for visitors at this event to practice their skills at home. \n*Tatreez Kit Giveaway will be on a first-come-first-serve basis until kits are no longer available.  \nProgramming takes place on a Wednesday\, which is free for Illinois residents. (4519 N. Lincoln\, 2357 W. Leland Ave & 4650 N. Western) \nSix months after her husband’s death\, Rosa lives alone in the family home and with her memories of a violent relationship. Rosa doesn’t even dare enter her husband’s private office. Her son is in jail and makes it quite clear that the less he hears from her the better. A friend tells her of a new milonga but Rosa hesitates. She hires Juan\, a local handyman and fellow tango lover\, to do some work around the house. She is clearly attracted to him. But is Juan her knight in shining armor? Shot entirely from Rosa’s point of view\, “Milonga” is a quietly observant film about the psychological mark and almost paralyzing fear left behind by an abusive relationship. Paulina García delivers a stunning and moving performance in Laura González’s quietly powerful feature debut.

SUMMARY:Guerrilla Television: The Revolutions of Early Independent Video Symposium
DESCRIPTION:When video cameras first became widely available in the late 1960s\, a global network of artists\, activists\, and documentarians quickly had the same realization: video is not merely a new format; video will change EVERYTHING about moving image media. Over the next decade-plus\, idealistic videomakers fought to overturn the top-down hierarchies of the film and TV industries to create a true “people’s television” that encouraged participation\, feedback\, and contributions from its audience. The proponents of Guerrilla Television threw out the rules of media\, filming ordinary people in their own communities\, and the revolution quickly spread. The result was a remarkably democratic movement\, one in which communities that rarely appeared on network television- women\, poor people\, people of color\, political radicals\, queer people – told their own stories. \nThis event is co-presented by Media Burn Archive\, University of Chicago\, and Video Data Bank.

SUMMARY:Four Thousand Years Blooming in a Cup: A Spring Gathering of Tea Meditation Workshop with Juliann Wang
DESCRIPTION:Each day we begin anew\, a cycle that persists since the dawn time. Each moment we encounter is its own universe. Tea is fabled to have existed in human culture for more than 4\,500 years\, but only as a daily beverage since the third century. Through tea we encounter the new and the old\, the pure and the everyday. \nIn this workshop\, you’ll experience a presentation of Chinese tea ceremony and a guide to various tea types. Along with this we’ll discuss brewing practices\, aesthetics\, and methods to bring harmony for ourselves and in gathering to share moments of subtle joy!! Limited to only 20 spots! \nWorkshop Highlights: \nPhilosophy of Tea: An introduction to tea preparation\, some methods\, and how the act of preparation is just as important as consuming a good cup of tea! \nTea Types: We will look at a few types of tea to familiarize ourselves with how they differ and their uses in daily and specialized practice. \nCreating a Mood: Setting up your space\, whether a complicated affair or a simple moment is important to bringing ourselves into awareness of the subtleties of flavor\, aroma\, and experience. We will discuss some methods to help enhance your personal tea experience\, and create a moment of pause in your daily routine. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street.

SUMMARY:The Trial of Pericles
DESCRIPTION:This is the latest installment of NHM’s Trial Series that takes legal cases and controversies from the pages of history and tries them before an audience to demonstrate the enduring relevance of these ancient disputes. You will witness talented legal minds litigating the fate of Pericles\, known as the great hero of Athenian democracy. \nIn 451 B.C.E.\, Pericles dramatically changed the Athenian Constitution to revoke the citizenship of those without two Athenian parents\, claiming this was necessary to protect Athens from foreign influence. Many viewed his actions as tyrannical because citizens lost their civil liberties\, including the right to vote. \n\n\n\n\n“Now\, it’s up to you\, the audience\, to decide: Was Pericles a hero or a tyrant?”
