SUMMARY:3rd Fridays Free Admission Museum Night
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. All tours depart from the reception desk\, and please be sure to arrive on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. Find out more through our website. \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street. \nIf you have any programming questions\, don’t hesitate to get in touch with info@heritageasianart.org or 312-842-8884.

SUMMARY:Stitching Stories: The First Thread
DESCRIPTION:Stitching Stories: The First Thread is a pop-up exhibition that brings together Asian and Black artists whose works explore cultural exchange\, storytelling\, and visions of shared futures through textile arts. This exhibition marks an inaugural step toward building a coalition of artists and community members committed to cross-cultural connection and solidarity. \nThe project grew out of an extended planning process and a series of six community workshops\, where Asian and Black artists engaged directly with participants through textile-making\, storytelling\, and relationship building. These collective efforts reflect a broader vision of collaboration\, mutual support\, and cultural exchange. \nStitching Stories is also an open invitation—for artists\, organizers\, and all who believe in bridging communities—to take part in deepening understanding across racial and cultural lines. \nThis pop-up exhibition is free with museum admission. Admission can be purchased online or at the front desk. With purchase of admissions ticket\, you are able to view the pop-up exhibition as well as the three open exihibits at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art! \nOrganizers and Partners \nHeritage Museum of Asian Art\, Needles and Threads Quilters Guild\, HerArt Foundation\, and the Abrahamic Center for Cultural Education \nSupported by Healing Illinois \nEvents \nOpening Reception: June 14\, 2–4 PM \nJuneteenth Special Activation: June 19\, 2–4 PM \nClosing Artist Conversation: June 22\, 2–4 PM \n  \nAccessibility: The museum is wheelchair accessible. Audio Description will be available for those who need it during events.

SUMMARY:‘Beyond Closure’: A Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Kennedy-King College for a screening of Beyond Closure (2024) and a panel discussion on community responses to Chicago’s 2013 school closures. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Beyond Closure (2024) by On The Real Film and Borderless Studio recalls the history of Chicago’s 2013 school closures—the largest mass closure in U.S. history—and shares inspirational stories of community reclamation. Join us at Kennedy-King College in Englewood for a screening and panel discussion\, in partnership with Go Green on Racine. \nTaking a deeper look at three schools in Austin\, Bronzeville\, and Englewood\, Beyond Closure amplifies community voices leading the repurposing of Emmet\, Woods\, and Overton schools. They reflect on the local impact of these closures\, the struggle to reclaim school buildings for the public good\, and the intertwined inequity\, racism\, and injustice that led to shuttering of 50 neighborhood schools all at once\, mainly in low-income communities of color. \nAfter the film\, a panel discussion will bring together architects and community developers working on “The Regenerator\,” a nexus for housing\, healthcare\, and jobs within the former Woods Academy\, to address challenges overcome in the adaptive reuse. Borderless Studio’s Paola Aguirre Serrano moderates. \nWatch the trailer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Book Signing and Presentation: Paris to Pamirs
DESCRIPTION:Join author Jaroslaw Martynuik at the Ukrainian National Museum\, June 13 at 6:30pm for a presentation and signing of his latest book\, Paris to Pamirs: Eurasian Odysseys. \nParis to Pamirs is a sequel to Monte Rosa: Memoir of an Accidental Spy\, a volume that documented the author’s life from WWII to his years in Paris\, where he worked for the IEA/OECD and later as an undercover researcher for Radio Liberty. The fall of Communism in 1991 opened opportunities for travel east of the defunct Iron Curtain. Over the next three decades\, Jaroslaw Martyniuk traveled to forty countries between the Atlantic Ocean and the high Pamir mountains in Tajikistan\, which border China and Afghanistan in Central Asia. Like a latterday Marco Polo\, Martyniuk takes his reader on an adventure from Western and Eastern Europe\, the Balkans\, Baltics\, Belarus\, Ukraine\, and Russia\, to Istanbul\, the Caucasus\, and Central Asia.

SUMMARY:Threads of Identity: Stitching Stories Through Portrait Quilts
DESCRIPTION:In this unique presentation\, artists will share their deeply personal approaches to transforming photographic images into expressive textile art. Through storytelling and visual examples\, they will discuss their inspirations\, creative processes\, techniques\, fabric selection and sourcing\, as well as the technical challenges they’ve encountered—and the innovative solutions they’ve discovered along the way. \nThe event will conclude with an open Q&A\, offering the audience a chance to engage directly with the artists. \nThis event is part of the Stitching Stories workshop and exhibition series. This is a collaboration between the Heritage Museum of Asian Art and the Needles and Threads Quilters Guild (ntqg.org)\, supported by Healing Illinois. \n  \nArtist bio: \nJoyce Weathington\n Joyce Weathington has been sewing since her teenage years\, but she found her true artistic calling five years ago when she discovered quilting. In particular\, she has developed a passion for portrait quilting—capturing faces\, memories\, and stories through Needles and Threads Quilters Guild. Her work reflects both her love of fabric and her desire to experiment with textile as a storytelling medium. \nDorothy Burge\n Dorothy Burge is a multimedia artist and community activist whose work is deeply rooted in social justice. Drawing inspiration from both historical and contemporary struggles for equity\, she uses quilting as her activist voice. A self-taught fiber artist\, Dorothy began creating quilts in the 1990s. She comes from a long line of Mississippi quilters\, whose traditions of repurposing old clothing into beautiful quilts continue to influence her powerful work today. \nDoris Barnes\n Doris Barnes fell in love with sewing at a young age in Mississippi\, where she was taught by her godmother. Since then\, her passion for sewing and quilting has only grown. Known for her bold color choices and non-traditional patterns\, Doris creates garments and quilts that reflect her vibrant personality. An award-winning quilter\, she quilts every single day and considers it her life’s passion. She also shares her skills by teaching quilting at her church and making charity quilts for those who are ill or homebound. \nAccessibility:\nThe museum is wheelchair accessible. Audio Description will be available for those who need it. \n  \nTickets & Support:\nIf cost is a barrier\, we warmly invite you to email us at info@heritagemuseum.org to reserve a spot—no one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nWe look forward to making something beautiful with you!

SUMMARY:Crossroads of Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Yurii Bandera’s exhibition\, “Crossroads of Worlds” (Перехрестя світів)\, will be on display May 30 to June 22 at the Ukrainian National Museum. His work invites viewers into a space where multiple realities converge: cultures\, memories\, and inner and outer landscapes. Each work is born from the artist’s encounter with these dual realms\, forming a visual dialogue between the seen and unseen. The “crossroads” becomes not just a motif but a philosophical meeting place—one where every viewer is invited to interpret the experience uniquely. The artistic journey of Yurii Bandera began in childhood. He graduated from Lviv Polytechnic University with a degree in Architecture. For over two decades\, he taught at the Stryi Higher Art Vocational School\, continuing to shape generations of young artists. In 2017\, Yurii Bandera’s contribution to Ukrainian art was officially recognized with his acceptance into the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. Now\, in his new world — the United States — he continues to explore and expand his creative vision.
