SUMMARY:Building a Relevant Historic Preservation Movement with Bonnie McDonald
DESCRIPTION:Kick off Preservation Month at the CAC with Landmarks Illinois President and CEO Bonnie McDonald! This program will explore the future of architectural preservation with her new book\, “The Relevancy Guidebook\,” unveiled in November 2023.\n\n\n\nAt its 50th anniversary\, Landmarks Illinois embarked on an effort to explore how to move preservation forward over the next 50 years\, culminating in its guiding principles. What the organization found is that preservationists across the nation are deeply questioning the practices and movement’s future. Landmarks Illinois president & CEO Bonnie McDonald was awarded a 2020 James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation Mid-Career Fellowship to help bring the field’s challenges\, and solutions\, to the forefront through the Relevancy Project. Between 2019-2021\, she spoke to 130 individuals\, both within and outside of the preservation field\, to explore these questions and bring forward crowdsourced wisdom illuminating how change is possible. The project evolved into a forward-looking effort to catalogue preservation’s issues\, make the case for its opportunities\, highlight resources and instigate collective action toward change that will build a more relevant and just movement. Join us as McDonald explores her findings catalogued in her book\, “The Relevancy Guidebook: How We Can Transform the Future of Preservation\,” published by Landmarks Illinois in November 2023. Read her January 2023 Next City Op Ed and guidebook Executive Summary for a primer on the Relevancy Project’s outcomes.\n\n\nSpeaker: Bonnie McDonald\, President & CEO of Landmark Illinois\nOver her 11-year tenure as President & CEO\, Bonnie McDonald has led Landmarks Illinois to become a statewide and national voice for relevant change at this inflection point for the preservation movement. Bonnie’s transformative leadership has led Landmarks Illinois to focus on people and their vital connection to place\, and to develop collaborative solutions addressing community concerns like climate change\, affordable housing and lack of access to capital. Her policy work to incent preservation has led to over $6B in investment in existing buildings and over 30K new jobs created. The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation awarded Bonnie its 2020 Mid-Career Fellowship to inform\, inspire and support preservation’s evolution through The Relevancy Project\, a four-year interview and research initiative culminating in the recently published Relevancy Guidebook. During this time\, she has also maintained her commitment to serving as volunteer and mentor in the preservation community. From 2018-2021\, Bonnie chaired the board of the National Preservation Partners Network\, the national nonprofit representing preservation organizations\, and she currently serves as an appointee to the State of Illinois Route 66 Centennial Commission. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot appointed Bonnie co-chair of the Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee in 2020 to help lead a truth and racial reckoning process around the city’s problematic artworks. Bonnie and Landmarks Illinois proudly received the AIA Chicago Distinguished Service Award in December 2022. She holds a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell University.

SUMMARY:Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chicago’s Loop is an inflection point\, emerging from the pandemic on shaky footing but also with abundant opportunity to transition to something more vibrant\, resilient\, and livable. Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns holds our central business district up to the light\, exploring ways to keep our economic engine humming while diversifying uses and making the Loop more welcoming for everyone. \nThe exhibition frames Chicago’s Loop as a “lab” for examining the shared challenges American downtowns face today. It prompts visitors’ reflection on their own experiences and aspirations and ventures design and policy solutions for reshaping downtowns and our relationship to them. The show espouses the belief that Chicagoans can continue to meet our challenges with vision and resolve\, while also drawing inspiration from more than a century of central area planning and a modern-day exchange of ideas with peer cities. \nLoop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns\, presents a range of projects\, initiatives\, and provocative design ideas centered around four themes: \n\nRESIDE: Where and why are people living downtown?\nRENEW: Can we repurpose existing buildings for long-term public or private gain?\nRECONNECT: Can city dwellers safely and comfortably traverse downtown\, and access its amenities and services?\nREWILD: How are we incorporating green spaces and accommodating nature?\n\nEach theme is developed through a look at case study plans/projects by leading designers\, architects\, and developers. In addition\, a corresponding set of “architectural follies-in-the-round” at the heart of the gallery offers interactive entrypoints for visitors\, inviting engagement with the themes and ideas in unique ways. Further personalizing the content\, vignettes of “downtown denizens” (e.g. residents\, shop owners\, cyclists\, students) feature their individual experiences and hopes for the downtown area. \nTo further drive home the importance of participatory design and planning\, the exhibit features various public engagement strategies and activities\, including interactive elements like an entryway video produced by local podcasters\, 77 Flavors of Chicago\, and a “ballot box” where visitors can write and submit feedback on downtown design issues. \nPhoto of Marina Towers taken by Jason Peterson \nLAB EXPLORER KITS FOR THE FAMILY\nDid you know that the Chicago Loop can be used as a laboratory to learn new things about how we live and play? Stop by the CAC Box Office during the run of this exhibition\, and pick up a Lab Explorer Kit! Contents are designed to engage youth ages 6 to 12.

SUMMARY:Reimagining South Asian Womanhood: A Review of The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness
DESCRIPTION:The SAI team would like to thank Mrittika Ghosh who writes for Sixty Inches from Center\, for her excellent review of our current exhibition of works by a collective of artists who\, to quote Ghosh “reclaim a derogatory epithet as a source of power….Named for reclaiming the space of madness\, The Paglees imagine a selfhood outside patriarchal bounds of what is ‘reasonable’\,” \nThe Paglees is an exhibition that should not be missed. It redefines the idea of eccentricity and juxtaposes the lives of several women who have been affected by the labels that patriarchy uses for them.

SUMMARY:Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:The CAC is kicking off its newest exhibition which examines the Loop as a lab. Here we can explore the challenges downtowns face\, reflect on our personal experiences and aspirations as city dwellers and propose design and policy solutions to make our cities more resilient and livable for everyone. \nThis exhibit focuses on 4 main themes\, Reside\, Reconnect\, Rewild and Renew\, as we look at the changing downtown and using Chicago’s loop as a model and laboratory for design. Tickets to the opening event include two drinks and light bites at the Center. Attendees will get an introduction to the exhibition from the designers and a panel discussion with subject experts and exhibition participants before joining the curators for walk and talks in the space. \n$20 to attend\, $15 for CAC Members

SUMMARY:Art Deco Outside of the Loop
DESCRIPTION:A continuation of last year’s popular program that looked at Chicago Art Deco buildings outside of downtown. \nThis program explores the city’s far north and northwest sides and provides an in-depth look at a variety of Art Deco structures\, including both residential and commercial buildings\, as well as a college\, a bridge\, and a mausoleum. Some are well-preserved city landmarks; some sport bold polychromatic terra cotta facades\, the likes of which are not seen downtown. But all of them have striking geometric ornamentation that reflected the optimism and prosperity of the Roaring 20s and that is still eye-catching today. \nProgram Presenter: Bill Coffin \nBill Coffin is a former appellate attorney and adjunct professor of legal research and writing\, Bill Coffin became a CAC docent in 2004. He is the tour director for the CAC‘s two Art Deco walking tours and has presented lectures about Art Deco at the CAC and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute\, a program of Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies. He enjoys sharing photos of Art Deco buildings with friends from his travels to cities big and small all across the country.

SUMMARY:Palestinian Tatreez Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Through needle\, thread and color\, the art of Tatreez tells a story about the maker and history of their family. Tatreez\, or embroidery\, is a rich artistic tradition that has been passed down across generations in Arab culture. It is typically used on garments with patterns and colors varying between birds\, trees\, flowers and geometric symbols. Tatreez patterns can even be as specific to the village\, city or country a family is from. \nJoin us for a demonstration on Palestinian style Tatreez in the Grainger Science Hub and to learn about the importance of this art form. See Kaftans\, Thobes and Abayas that feature traditional patterns and embroidery brought out from our collection up-close during this event. \nThere will be a limited number of Tatreez kits to giveaway* for visitors at this event to practice their skills at home. \n*Tatreez Kit Giveaway will be on a first-come-first-serve basis until kits are no longer available.  \nProgramming takes place on a Wednesday\, which is free for Illinois residents. Visitors must show proof of residency. Learn more.
