SUMMARY:“Lay Of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“Lay of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” will open on Friday\, April 5 at 6 p.m. with\nartists Dragos Alexandrescu\, Linnéa Therese Dimitriou\, Heidi-Anett Haugen\, Hanna\nKanto\, Lotta Lampa\, Patricia Rodas\, Anastasia Savinova\, and Madelaine Sillfors.\nProfoundly influenced by Nordic culture\, landscape\, and even weather\, the Art\nAlliance of the Arctic South (A-A-A-S) consists of eight artists whose work spans\nmedium and scale—from intricate collages and life-size sculptural installations to\nevocative video pieces and design objects. Their synergy stems from a shared ethos: a\ndeep-rooted connection to nature\, and a place-specific gaze upon environmental and\ncultural discourses. With this comes an unraveling of identity—both personal and\ncollective. The vast\, almost otherworldly Nordic landscapes serve as both muse and\nnarrative\, embodying themes of colonization (literal and figurative\,) ecological\ndevastation\, and the continual process of mourning and healing. \nFrom their unique vantage points in peripheral locations\, far removed from traditional\nart centers\, the artists offer a distinct and intimate perspective\, shedding light on\nworldwide socio-economic dilemmas and the imminent climate crisis. A heavy\nphysical presence permeates their work\, reflecting both past and present\, tradition and\ncontemporaneity. Vulnerability and empathy underscore their narratives\, prompting\ndeeper existential introspection as they urge viewers to ponder art’s pivotal role amidst\nglobal shifts\, raising imperative questions about our shared future.\nIn essence\, the A-A-A-S encapsulates a delicate balance between the old and the new\,\nthe local and the global. Introducing Northern Scandinavia’s next-wave artists to the\nUnited States\, this group exhibition is set to challenge\, provoke\, and inspire\,\nprompting us all to consider our collective path and the pressing need for change.\nUltimately\, it urges a look inward—to the roots and to the self.\nThe Swedish American Museum has shared art\, culture\, and history from throughout\nthe world and this next Main Gallery exhibit opening provides visitors with an\nopportunity to meet the artists behind the pieces on display. Lay Of(f) the Land:\nNordic Narratives is curated by Vasia Rigou. The exhibit is open at the Swedish\nAmerican Museum from April 5 – June 16.

SUMMARY:America's Diner Restaurants: A Greek Story with Professor Alexander Kitroeff
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the National Hellenic Museum on April 4\, 2024\, from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM for an evening with Professor Alexander Kitroeff (Haverford College)\, one of the foremost historians of the Greek American experience\, where he will be presenting “American Diner Restaurants: A Greek Story.” Few things are as intimately associated with Greek American life as the American diner. From the 1960s through the early 2000s\, Greek Americans dominated the diner restaurant scene in the Northeast and the Midwest\, but how and why did this come to be? Professor Kitroeff narrates this fascinating story\, exploring the cultural and structural factors that lead to this dominance. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the rich and complex story of America’s Diner Restaurants from a\nleading authority in the field.

SUMMARY:Roots of Reform: A Woman’s Place is…?
DESCRIPTION:Early Chicago female reformers left a legacy that influences public policy and social justice activism to this day. Join us as we explore their place… where they lived\, worked\, and made a difference in Chicago through the safety net they wove. \nIt’s important in Chicago to recognize the contributions of women to social\, economic\, and educational reforms for urban development. Focusing on their work from 1870 – 1920 (BEFORE they had the vote)\, we consider where and how these women laid the foundations of reforms that support Chicago’s vibrant and diverse communities through local\, state\, and national policies that continue to this day. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM PRESENTER\nCAC docent Catherine Thomson is a professional property manager and an avid social justice activist. She is also one-half of HERstory\, a duo of women honoring the achievements of women through musical storytelling programs such as The 19th Amendment and the Power of the Vote\, Trailblazing Female Firsts\, and debuting March 9th\, A Century of Songwriting Sisters. Catherine celebrates HERstory every day\, but during Women’s History Month\, it is a delight to dig deep into the roots of reform and the Chicago women who cultivated them.

SUMMARY:The Book of Prague: Ten stories by Czech authors in first-ever English release
DESCRIPTION:Petr Hruška\, one of the Czech Republic’s leading contemporary poets\, will introduce Everything Indicates: Selected Poems – an invaluable introduction to his work for English-speaking readers\, gathered in a translation of verve and poignancy by Jonathan Bolton. Hruška’s poems uncover realities we may have sensed but have never before found as precisely and unsettlingly articulated. \nJan Zikmund\, the co-editor of the recently published The Book of Prague\, will discuss the short stories included in the anthology that present Prague in a completely new light. These stories take us into less-visited corners of Prague – from the steep streets of the proudly edgy Žižkov neighborhood to the flood-ravaged suburb of Karlín\, from the tensions experienced by the city’s Romani community to the dehumanizing post-war redevelopment of areas like Libeň\, proving that there are always facets to a city’s character you would never have imagined. Listen to the interview.
