DESCRIPTION:The Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center is hosting their very own Jazz Appreciation Month series of events. This years line-up includes Chris Madsen\, Raíces Latin Jazz\, Julián Pujols Quall\, La Cantera & Friends Jam Session at The California Clipper\, and Gabriel Rodriguez. This event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial master class for aspiring young musicians with Chicago-based saxophonist Chris Madsen. Participating performing ensembles include College of DuPage Jazz Combo led by Matt Shevitz and SRBCC’s La Cantera. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaíces was modeled on the famous Cal Tjader Quintet of the 1950’s & 60’s by the late Chicago percussionist Rubén Alvarez and is now led by vibraphonist Joe Sonnefeldt. Since their post-pandemic return\, the group has thrilled audiences at area music festivals and Chicago performance venues. Raíces includes Stuart Seale on piano\, Eric Ferrer on bassist \, Bobby Delgado on timbales\, and Jorge Leal on congas.\n\n\nJulián Pujols Quall and Jonathan Suazo bring two music projects together in an exploration of Afro-Puerto Rican and Afro-Dominican Jazz.\n\n\n\nAfter playing alongside New York Times’ “Top 10 Jazz Musicians of 2023” Jonathan Suazo and Santana’s Paoli Mejías\, La Cantera is hosting a Jazz Appreciation Month Jam session with some of Chicago’s top jazz artists as part of their monthly residency at The California Clipper in Humboldt Park. We will host up to 20 students in our industrial kitchen at the DANK Haus. These 20 students will get hands on training from Reinhard Richter\, our resident Pretzel Meister\, and take home their homemade pretzels at the end of the class. \nWe have 2 classes to choose from. DESCRIPTION:“Lay of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” will open on Friday\, April 5 at 6 p.m. with\nartists Dragos Alexandrescu\, Linnéa Therese Dimitriou\, Heidi-Anett Haugen\, Hanna\nKanto\, Lotta Lampa\, Patricia Rodas\, Anastasia Savinova\, and Madelaine Sillfors.\nProfoundly influenced by Nordic culture\, landscape\, and even weather\, the Art\nAlliance of the Arctic South (A-A-A-S) consists of eight artists whose work spans\nmedium and scale—from intricate collages and life-size sculptural installations to\nevocative video pieces and design objects. Their synergy stems from a shared ethos: a\ndeep-rooted connection to nature\, and a place-specific gaze upon environmental and\ncultural discourses. With this comes an unraveling of identity—both personal and\ncollective. The vast\, almost otherworldly Nordic landscapes serve as both muse and\nnarrative\, embodying themes of colonization (literal and figurative\,) ecological\ndevastation\, and the continual process of mourning and healing. \nFrom their unique vantage points in peripheral locations\, far removed from traditional\nart centers\, the artists offer a distinct and intimate perspective\, shedding light on\nworldwide socio-economic dilemmas and the imminent climate crisis. A heavy\nphysical presence permeates their work\, reflecting both past and present\, tradition and\ncontemporaneity. Vulnerability and empathy underscore their narratives\, prompting\ndeeper existential introspection as they urge viewers to ponder art’s pivotal role amidst\nglobal shifts\, raising imperative questions about our shared future.\nIn essence\, the A-A-A-S encapsulates a delicate balance between the old and the new\,\nthe local and the global. Introducing Northern Scandinavia’s next-wave artists to the\nUnited States\, this group exhibition is set to challenge\, provoke\, and inspire\,\nprompting us all to consider our collective path and the pressing need for change.\nUltimately\, it urges a look inward—to the roots and to the self.\nThe Swedish American Museum has shared art\, culture\, and history from throughout\nthe world and this next Main Gallery exhibit opening provides visitors with an\nopportunity to meet the artists behind the pieces on display. This session offers a unique opportunity to engage with Korean heritage in a creative and meaningful manner. \nAbout the Instructor: Young Kim is a Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist from South Korea who works with painting\, weaving\, installation\, hand paper-making\, and performance. She received a BFA in Textile Art from Hongik University in Seoul and an MFA in Fine Arts at Columbia College Chicago in 2023 and has participated in considerable solo and group exhibitions throughout Korea\, the U.S.\, and abroad.
