SUMMARY:3rd Fridays Free Admission Museum Night
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. All tours depart from the reception desk\, and please be sure to arrive on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. Find out more through our website. \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street. \nIf you have any programming questions\, don’t hesitate to get in touch with info@heritageasianart.org or 312-842-8884.

SUMMARY:Don't Go: Tonika Johnson & Maria Krysan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Tonika Lewis Johnson and Dr. Maria Krysan discussing their new book\, Don’t Go: Stories of Segregation and How to Disrupt It. \nThe program will feature a thought-provoking conversation between the two authors\, a Black artist and a White academic\, who met through their shared passion for anti-segregation work. Together\, they’ll discuss their research and documentation of personal stories detailed in the book\, and actionable ways to disrupt harmful cycles of disinvestment and resource disparity across Chicago’s neighborhoods and built environment. \nIn their new book\, Tonika Lewis Johnson and Dr. Maria Krysan document the reflections of Chicagoans who’ve heard\, taken\, or given the all-too-common advice\, “Don’t go to Chicago’s South or West Sides.” By inviting readers into the lives of Chicagoans who have ignored these warnings\, the stories in Don’t Go discuss the consequences of built environment disinvestment\, pervasive social influence\, and de facto segregation\, while also highlighting the rewards of coming together.

She reflects on the environmental devastation wrought by war in Ukraine while drawing parallels to ecological challenges in the U.S. such as industrial agriculture and climate change. SUMMARY:ADFF Screening - E. 1027: Eileen Gray and the House by the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Architecture & Design Film Festival Screening: This is a story about Eileen Gray’s visionary masterpiece\, E.1027\, and her battle to reclaim control from Le Corbusier’s dominance over her creation. \nAbout the Film: \nShe built a house for herself. Unfortunately\, it turned out to be a masterpiece. \nIrish designer Eileen Gray built a refuge on the Côte d‘Azur in 1929. Her first house is a discrete\, avant-garde masterpiece. She named it E.1027\, a cryptic marriage of her initials and those of Jean Badovici\, with whom she built it. \nLe Corbusier\, upon discovering the house\, became intrigued and obsessed. He later covered the walls with murals and published photos of them. Gray described these paintings as vandalism and demanded restitution. He ignored her wishes and instead built his famous Cabanon directly behind E.1027\, which dominates the narrative of the site to this day. \nThis is a story about the power of one woman’s creative expression and a man’s desire to control it.
