SUMMARY:BETWEEN ROOTS AND HORIZON
DESCRIPTION:In Between Roots and Horizon\, Mosiyevych explores the convergence of Ukrainian and American landscapes through cultural and ecological themes. She reflects on the environmental devastation wrought by war in Ukraine while drawing parallels to ecological challenges in the U.S. such as industrial agriculture and climate change. These parallel concerns serve as metaphors for the human experience of displacement and adaptation\, capturing the fragile yet resilient connection between people and their environment.

SUMMARY:ADFF Screening - E. 1027: Eileen Gray and the House by the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Architecture & Design Film Festival Screening: This is a story about Eileen Gray’s visionary masterpiece\, E.1027\, and her battle to reclaim control from Le Corbusier’s dominance over her creation. \nAbout the Film: \nShe built a house for herself. Unfortunately\, it turned out to be a masterpiece. \nIrish designer Eileen Gray built a refuge on the Côte d‘Azur in 1929. Her first house is a discrete\, avant-garde masterpiece. She named it E.1027\, a cryptic marriage of her initials and those of Jean Badovici\, with whom she built it. \nLe Corbusier\, upon discovering the house\, became intrigued and obsessed. He later covered the walls with murals and published photos of them. Gray described these paintings as vandalism and demanded restitution. He ignored her wishes and instead built his famous Cabanon directly behind E.1027\, which dominates the narrative of the site to this day. \nThis is a story about the power of one woman’s creative expression and a man’s desire to control it.

DESCRIPTION:Join CAMOC on Saturday\, January 25\, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM in the FL2 gallery space for a screening of Bluff City Chinese\, A Documentary Film\, followed by a panel Q&A. \nRuntime: 45 min \nGenre: Documentary Feature \nLanguage: English \nBluff City Chinese is a powerful documentary following the intertwined journeys of two Chinese-American storytellers from different generations\, who come together to recover and share the untold history of Chinese immigrants in Memphis\, Tennessee. Directed by Thandi Cai (Anna) and featuring their mentor and Delta Chinese elder\, Emerald Dunn\, the film dives into the layered and challenging process of reconstructing a community’s history from the ground up. Set against a backdrop of social and racial tensions\, Cai and Dunn work to build an authentic record of Memphis’s Chinese community\, navigating profound questions of identity\, belonging\, and intergenerational understanding along the way. \nThe story begins with parallel narratives: Emerald Dunn’s extensive historical research\, which has documented Chinese experiences in the South\, and Cai’s own return to Memphis in 2020. Brought together by the Chinese Historical Society during a time of increased anti-Asian sentiment nationwide\, they share a sense of urgency to reclaim the voices of the past. Drawing on Dunn’s independently gathered archives of photographs\, genealogical records\, and news clippings\, they embark on a journey beyond personal discovery\, inviting others from the Chinese Memphian community—ages 15 to 92—to share their stories. These conversations result in 28 collected oral histories\, forming a rich 150-year long patchwork of stories and to spin a tapestry of memories\, hopes\, and dreams. \nThe two storytellers then take the audience to explore the untold narratives of Chinese settlers in the Mississippi Delta. By guiding viewers through their journey\, from the Main Library to historic Elmwood Cemetery and everything that happened in-between\, this film invites you to reflect on the past\, connect with the present\, and consider the future of Chinese-American heritage in the American South. \nBy telling this history\, Cai and Dunn forge an intergenerational bond that bridges distinct upbringings and perspectives\, shaped by shared experiences of fear\, hope\, and pride as Chinese Americans in Memphis. Reflecting this diversity\, the documentary team includes first- through fourth-generation Chinese Memphians\, all dedicated to capturing the community’s complex and evolving identity. \nAt its core\, Bluff City Chinese is a tribute to the Chinese Memphian community—a powerful testament to how storytelling\, tradition\, and a shared vision for the future can bring generations together. As Cai and Dunn explore what it means to preserve their community’s legacy\, they reveal the resilience of a people reclaiming their narrative\, ultimately offering an inspiring call for unity\, identity\, and the passing of wisdom from one generation to the next. \nLearn more:\nhttps://bluffcitychinese.com/ \nhttps://www.instagram.com/bluffcitychinese/

SUMMARY:Architect Talk: Carol Ross Barney
DESCRIPTION:Dive into an architectural career devoted to people\, places and cities\, celebrated in the new book\, The People’s Architect. A widely admired urbanist\, mentor and educator\, Carol advocates for excellent design accessible to all—as a right rather than a privilege. Encompassing new schools\, libraries\, transit stations and parks\, including city-defining projects like the Chicago Riverwalk\, her practice showcases a belief in the transformative power of the built environment in our daily lives. In an age of diminishing investment in and care for our shared public realm\, Carol’s work reminds us of the catalytic power of beautifully designed infrastructure and civic spaces. \nPre-signed copies of The People’s Architect are available for purchase at the CAC Design Store or online. Get your copy personally inscribed by Carol at the conclusion of the program. \nGuests are invited to a reception with light bites and refreshments at 5:00 p.m. outside the lecture hall. SUMMARY:Spotlight Series Opening Reception - Linye Jiang: Undisclosed Location
DESCRIPTION:CAMOC is pleased to present the first Spotlight Artist of 2025\, Linye Jiang with Undisclosed Location. \nIn this installation\, Jiang’s work is a love letter to photography\, focusing on overlooked\, peripheral details in the landscape rather than grand\, iconic scenes—poetic fragments that feel personal and familiar. By stepping into the frame and re-photographing their own work\, the artist challenges the invisibility often expected of photographers\, occupying the space between observer and participant. “Undisclosed locations—private\, unmarked\, and unseen—exist because I chose to withhold them\,” and offer here a quiet inquiry into absence\, visibility\, and the complex relationship between self and landscape. \nLinye Jiang (@linye.j) is a lens-based artist whose work explores gender roles\, human complexity\, and the intersection of societal culture with personal experience. With a focus on pushing the boundaries of photography\, Linye integrates the medium with sculptural forms and performance\, creating immersive installations. Her work draws from personal narratives\, this intimate connection infuses her work with authenticity and emotional depth. Based in Chicago\, Linye actively engages with the local and international art communities through exhibitions\, collaborations\, and educational programs. \nCAMOC’s ongoing Spotlight Series\, curated by Larry Lee (@‌lardamang)\, exists to showcase the dynamic array of Chinese American artists working in the vibrant world of contemporary fine arts in Chicago and beyond. \nRSVP for the opening reception on Sunday\, January 19\, 2-5 PM. \nThis exhibition will run from Jan. 19th to Feb. 23rd\, 2025.

SUMMARY:3rd Fridays Free Admission Museum Night
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. All tours depart from the reception desk\, and please be sure to arrive on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. Find out more through our website. \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street. \nIf you have any programming questions\, don’t hesitate to get in touch with info@heritageasianart.org or 312-842-8884.
