SUMMARY:Surviving the Long Wars: Exhibition Close-Up and Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:This program will be held in-person at the Newberry. Advance registration required. \nJoin military veterans and poets Erika Renee Land\, Monty Little (Diné)\, Dunya Mikhail\, and Carlos Sirah for an evening of poetry exploring the disparate impacts of war and the search for a path toward solidarity. \nThis event will also provide a closer look at the Newberry exhibition Surviving the Long Wars: Residues and Rebellions. The exhibition coincides with the second Veteran Art Triennial and Summit\, held this year in Chicago. The exhibition at the Newberry is open February 28 – May 27\, 2023. \nAbout the SURVIVING THE LONG WARS Project:\nFrom the US “Indian Wars” to the “Global War on Terror\,” SURVIVING THE LONG WARS explores the multiple overlapping histories that shape our understanding of warfare\, as well as alternative visions of peace\, healing\, and justice generated by diverse communities impacted by war. \nInspired by the powerful artwork of Indigenous and Native American artists responding to the US “Indian Wars\,” and artists of the Greater Middle East reacting to the “Global War on Terror\,” the second Veteran Art Triennial and Summit focuses on how these artistic responses complicate and entangle with the artistic practices of veterans. The featured artworks\, projects\, and programs create opportunities for people to deepen their understanding of the impact of war. \nThe project began in September 2022 with a virtual scholarly seminar series at the nexus of critical ethnic studies\, Native/Indigenous studies\, and Middle Eastern Studies on the histories and futures of Native rebellion alongside contemporary US militarism and warfare. The project culminates in the spring 2023 second Veteran Art Triennial and Summit at the Chicago Cultural Center\, Hyde Park Art Center\, and Newberry Library. \nRelated Exhibitions and Programming: \nVeteran Art Summit: March 16 – March 19\, 2023 \nHyde Park Art Center Exhibition: March 16 – July 9\, 2023; Opening Program: March 17\, 2023 \nChicago Cultural Center Exhibition: March 4 – June 4\, 2023; Opening Program: March 18\, 2023 \nCredits: \nSURVIVING THE LONG WARS is organized by Aaron Hughes\, Ronak K. Kapadia\, Therese Quinn\, Joseph Lefthand\, Amber Zora\, and Meranda Roberts with support from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Institute for the Humanities Innovation Grant\, UIC Award for Creative Activity\, Chicago Cultural Center\, Hyde Park Art Center\, Newberry Library\, DEMIL Art Fund\, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Dialogues on the Experiences of War Grant. SUMMARY:Starkbierfest Open Haus
DESCRIPTION:Friday March 17th is a night of fun at our Open Haus! This month’s theme is Starkbierfest! We will have German Bier on tap and food for purchase!  \nAfter the debauchery of Faschingszeit (carnival season)\, we have started into Fastenzeit (lent). Fortify yourself for this time of austereness by trying some “liquid food” – the genius invention of 17th century Paulaner monk Salvator who decided to help his fasting brothers by brewing a batch of “strong beer” which was rich in nutrients and calories. \nTo this day\, all of Bavaria’s breweries create a version of Starkbier during lent. Just like the originator\, Salvator from the Paulaner Brewery\, most varieties end with the “-ator” appendix: Optimator\, Triumphator\, Maximator\, Terminator\, and countless others. During our March Stammtisch Open Haus you can taste some of those delicious brews. \nOur Open Haus is a great way to meet new friends\, or bring your friends and introduce them to the Haus! This event is located in our popular 2nd Floor Brauhaus. \nFree parking at 5/3 Bank after 6:00 PM located at Western and Gunnison

SUMMARY:Paint Night
SUMMARY:Stained-Glass in Chicago's Synagogues
DESCRIPTION:When we think of stained glass windows\, we often think of Churches. Synagogues also have a rich tradition of stained-glass windows. Join us as we explore how these windows beautify sacred spaces across Chicago. \nIn 2021 Chicagoans were alerted to the possibility of the Loop Synagogue closing due to the impact of the pandemic. Fortunately\, the synagogue has recovered\, but the possibility raised concern about the fate of its magnificent stained glass window\, “Let There be Light” by Abraham Rattner. While this is undoubtedly the city’s best-known synagogue stained-glass window\, there are many others\, ranging from nineteenth century anonymous works to some by well-known artists. We will feature them in the program. \nThis presentation will expand our understanding of stained-glass windows in area synagogues as we explore the artists behind these windows and what happens to the windows when synagogues move and/or close. \nThis is a virtual program with a $15 registration fee and is free for CAC Members \nPRESENTER: SUSAN JACOBSON\n \nSusan Jacobson has been a docent since 2008 and gives nine different tours. She is co-director of Synagogues by Bus and Tiffany Treasures. Prior to becoming a docent\, Susan enjoyed a 40-year career in academic librarianship at the University of Pennsylvania\, Columbia University\, and the University of Illinois in Chicago.

SUMMARY:Greek Independence in the Early American Republic
DESCRIPTION:In the early days of the American Republic the question of Greek Independence was one of the major issues of the day\, frequently standing as a proxy for America’s own tumultuous internal politics. This included the debate of slavery\, where the Turkish occupation of Greek lands was often used as neutral stand-in for the topic of American chattel slavery.
