SUMMARY:Powerlands: In-person Watch Party and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Earth Day and Earth Week\, join us for an in-person watch party of the film Powerlands. A limited number of tickets will be available for this screening on April 23 at 5:00 p.m.\, followed by a discussion at 6:15pm via zoom with filmmaker Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso. The watch party will feature light snacks and refreshments at the Mitchell Museum. \nPowerlands \nA young Navajo filmmaker investigates displacement of Indigenous people and devastation of the environment caused by the same chemical companies that have exploited the land where she was born. On this personal and political journey she learns from Indigenous activists across three continents. Website: https://powerlands.org/ \nFilmmaker: \nIvey-Camille Manybeads Tso – Director Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso is an award-winning queer Navajo filmmaker. She was a fellow with the Firelight Media Documentary Filmmaker Lab\, and the 4th World Indigenous Media Lab. She started making films at the age of 9\, through the Native youth media project Outta Your Backpack Media. At the age of 13 she made the award-winning fiction film In the Footsteps of Yellow Woman\, based in the true story of her great-great-great grandmother Yellow Woman\, who lived through the Navajo Long Walk of 1864-1868. The film screened in over 90 film festivals internationally and won 11 awards. Ivey Camille continued to refine her filmmaking craft with a full scholarship to Idyllwild Arts Academy in California. She later returned home to work on films in her community of Navajo Nation. At the age of 19\, Ivey Camille began work on Powerlands\, her first feature. Powerlands has screened internationally and won several festival awards including the The 2022 Rigoberta Menchú Grand Prize. \nDirectors Statement \nMy grandmother taught me how to stand on the frontlines. She taught me about the ways that my ancestors have resisted displacement since colonial settlers came here. When thinking about how to tell the stories in this film\, I think first about the storytelling traditions I have learned from elders in my community. That is why this story is told through the stories\, voices\, and languages of Indigenous women. \nI started making films at the age of nine\, through the Native youth media project Outta Your Backpack Media. At the age of 13\, I directed In the Footsteps of Yellow Woman\, based in the true story of my great-great-great grandmother Yellow Woman\, who lived through the Navajo Long Walk of 1864- 1868. At the age of 19\, I started Powerlands\, which took six years to film and edit. \nFor too long\, others have been telling our stories. As an Indigenous filmmaker\, I have seen the ways in which our stories are co-opted and stolen. This film is an intervention\, a chance for our stories to be told by us\, in our own languages. \nAll proceeds will support our Indigenous Medicine and Traditional Food Gardens. How do they translate deep research into compelling narrative? How do they think about evidence—and the absence of evidence—as they write? Are there lines between educating readers and providing them with gripping stories? \nThis installment of “Conversations at the Newberry” brings together two writers\, Nicholson Baker and Daniel Immerwahr\, who explore themes of American empire. Though they approach their work through different lenses and write in different styles\, both Baker and Immerwahr dig into the complex histories of US foreign relations. In this conversation\, they’ll think together about how literature and historical writing have shaped understandings of American power.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Ballpark
DESCRIPTION:What can Chicago’s ballparks tell us about the evolution of our city? Pulitzer Prize winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the connection between American cities and America’s favorite pastime. \nThis program is $15 to attend and $7 for CAC Members. \nIn a discussion of his 2019 book Ballpark: Baseball in the American City\, Goldberger offers some valuable context about how baseball and ballparks have shaped our cities\, both physically and psychologically. He tracks the evolution of baseball’s tastes in stadium location and design and why they matter. He explores how the architecture of ballparks\, reflects how we view our cities and the game and how the two relate to each other. \nA book signing will take place at the conclusion of the program. Books will be available at the CAC design store. \nAUTHOR: PAUL GOLDBERGER\n \nPaul Goldberger\, a contributing editor at Vanity Fair\, began his career at The New York Times\, where he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism for his writing on architecture. Later\, and for 15 years\, he was architecture critic for The New Yorker. He is the author of many books\, most recently Ballpark: Baseball in the American City (May\, 2019). Goldberger teaches at the New School and lectures widely around the country on architecture\, design\, historic preservation\, and cities.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our artist discussion about their work and who they are as artists. There will be a live Q&A at the end of each discussion.\nValaria Tatera is a Wisconsin based installation artist\, activist and lecturer whose work investigates the intersection of ethnicity\, gender\, commerce\, and the environment. An enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa\, Valaria explores self identity and contemporary Indigenous issues such as the impact of colonization on Indigenous Erasure\, Visibility and Resilience. Her intention is “for the work to hold visual and personal space for statistics that often erase the individual”. Valaria earned an MFA in 3-D from the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, M.A. and B.F.A. in Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is a recipient of the 2021 Foundation for Contemporary Art micro grant and the 2022 Mary Nohl fellowship for the established artist category. She has exhibited regionally and nationally in galleries and Museums. Recently\, her work was featured at the Museum of Wisconsin Art\, Trout Museum of Contemporary Art\, RAHR Museum\, All My Relations Gallery\, Sweet Briar College\, Truax Gallery and the Wisconsin Biennial. Currently\, her work is at Charles Allis Museum\, Madeline Island Museum\, Mitchell Museum of Indian of the American Indian and will be at the Haggerty Museum.

DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, none of Bulgaria’s approximately 50\,000 Jews were deported to Nazi death camps. This incredible feat was possible thanks to Bulgarian politicians\, administrators\, officers\, clergymen\, intellectuals\, and ordinary citizens who refused to yield to Nazi pressure. The Bulgarian state also facilitated transportation for Jewish refugees from Central and Eastern Europe\, and Bulgaria’s embassies and consulates issued around 15\,000 transit visas to Jews fleeing other countries. \nLearn more about the extraordinary acts by Bulgarians to save their Jewish community during World War II with Professor Michael Bar-Zohar\, winner of the Skolov Award for his achievements as a journalist and author of several books\, including biographies recounting the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from Nazis in World War II; and Svetoslav Stankov\, Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Chicago. Their conversation will reflect upon the significance of the 80th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews and how we must continue to resist antisemitism and hatred today. \nReservations required. The PMA is Unit #12. We are meeting at the corner of Columbus Dr. and Balbo St. The official route runs along Columbus\, from Balbo to Monroe. We recommend wearing your most comfortable walking shoes\, and something white and red\, if possible. \nFollowing the parade\, all are invited to attend the Great Constitutional Concert at the Chopin Garden in Grant Park (11th & Michigan Ave) at 2 pm.

SUMMARY:Windows on Design Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Stained glass has been enhancing buildings around the world for thousands of years. Discover how these windows are designed and then make your own acrylic stained-glass window. \nThis hands-on session will begin with a tour of one of Chicago’s most iconic stained glass windows\, the Preston Bradley Hall’s Tiffany Dome at the Chicago Cultural Center. Workshop participants will learn about the significance of this and other windows around the city. Back at the CAC\, participants will take what they learned and make their own acrylic stained window project to take home. \nThis workshop costs $25 for general admission and $17 for CAC Members. Price includes cost of materials. \nAll supplies for this workshop are provided. \nPlease note that this program will involve a short walk outside between the CAC and the Chicago Cultural Center (about 1 mile).
