Castillo and Wil Sands\, which compiles documentary photography\, video\, archival materials\, and personal and political discourse to present the physical and symbolic boundaries that form America’s borders. The resulting images and documents not only provide tangibility to an abstract space but offer those within it visibility and voice.  \nBoth veteran photojournalists\, Castillo and Sands spent months documenting and collaborating with migrants in Mexico and at the US border. BorderCruzadas is the result of shared efforts to present a visual\, evidentiary case for urgent\, effective\, and coordinated public policy and humanitarian aid for the globally displaced.

DESCRIPTION:Immigration is one of the most politicized issues in the United States\, as politicians across both aisles debate the fate of people fleeing violence\, poverty\, trafficking\, hunger\, and [political instability. ART WORKS Projects presents From BordersCruzadas to Borderlines\, a discussion between photographers Will Sands\, Oscar Castillo (BordersCruzadas project] and Cathy Edelman\, from Illinois based nonprofit CASE Art Fund [Borderlines exhibition]\, presenting two sides of a very complex issue facing the US Southern border. \nBordersCruzadas: A Collaborative Story recognizes that people impacted by displacement are often excluded from the conversations that determine their fate. Through documentary photography and content collaboratively created with four people fleeing their homeland\, BordersCruzadas explores the physical and symbolic boundaries that define the lived experience of those seeking to cross the United States’ southern border. \nBorderlines is CASE Art Fund’s ongoing photographic exhibition about the Juarez/Texas/New Mexico border. At Expo Chicago\, CASE will recreate the Sunland Park\, NM desert\, the site of the most recent cros­­sings in the El Paso region. The exhibition includes photographs of the terrain\, objects found in the desert\, photographs and videos of helicopters and border patrol searching the desert\, and a poignant interview from a local proprietor whose business is the site of most desert crossings today and in 2022. \nFrom BordersCruzadas to Borderlines will be held in person at ART WORKS Projects\, 625 N Kingsbury St\, Chicago\, on Wednesday\, April 12. \nDoors open at 5 pm to for an early preview of an exhibition in development\, BordersCruzadas. \nThe presentation and discussion will be from 6:00 – 7:15 pm.

SUMMARY:Chicago Latino Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Latino Film Festival began in 1985 with 14 films projected onto a concrete wall for an audience of 500. Today\, the Festival screens close to 100 films from all over Latin America\, the Caribbean\, Spain\, Portugal and the United States. \nThe Festival offers Chicago film lovers from all walks of life the opportunity to view films that might otherwise be inaccessible because they have yet to secure a distributor or streaming deal. Its programming reflects recent trends in Iberoamerican cinema\, from films that have become a sensation in the international festival circuit or were box-office hits in their country of origin or have yet to be released theatrically. \nThe Chicago Latino Film Festival is produced by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago\, a pan-Latino\, nonprofit\, multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to developing\, promoting and increasing awareness of Latino cultures by presenting a wide variety of art forms and education including film\, music\, dance\, visual arts\, comedy and theater. Imperative to the ILCC mission is to increase cultural opportunities for the Latino community\, as well as\, create a cultural dialogue amongst Latinos and non-Latinos to discuss universal cross-cultural experiences.

Pulaski Rd. \nTRANSLATION: \nWe invite you to a presentation by linguist and author Prof. Giedrius Subačius\, from University of Illinois\, who has recently published an impressively sized work entitled “Simon Daukantas’ St Petersburg Orthography (1834-1846)”. The meeting will provide an opportunity to learn more about the 19th Century Lithuanian author Simonas Daukantas’ life and works. Daukantas’ personality\, activities and importance to our history are still not widely known. \nWhat is known or not known about Daukantas\, and what we may never know of him will be explored. Professor Subačius is a true expert on Daukantas\, having written about him in his dissertation\, and more recently he has returned to the subject and published two monographs on Daukantas’ writing. He will talk about what Daukantas did in St Petersburg. For example\, did you know that there he met Valančius\, worked side by side\, and even created his own “Samogitian Academy”? Was it easy and cheap to publish books at that time? Do you know that Daukantas published 13 Lithuanian books in St Petersburg and not all printers understood Daukantas’ Lithuanian texts? What new methods are used today to find out when manuscripts were written? What can spelling tell us in general? Do you know that Daukant’s stable spelling is linked to his spiritual upliftment\, and that the irregularity of his spelling is often the result of despondency\, lack of harmony and illness? \nAll this and more will be revealed at Prof. Giedrius Subačius presentation on Saturday\, April 15 at 2 p.m. at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago\, 6500 S. They will also receive guidance and instruction on creating their dragon painting using traditional Chinese brushes\, ink\, and paper. \nThis workshop focuses on the intricate and detailed techniques used to create the classic blue and white dragon paintings synonymous with Chinese art. Participants will learn how to use brush strokes to create the texture and shape of the dragon and how to layer ink to achieve depth and dimensionality in their paintings. \nOverall\, the Chinese Traditional Blue and White Dragon Painting Workshop is a fun and educational activity perfect for individuals interested in learning about traditional Chinese art and culture. It provides a unique opportunity to develop new skills and gain a deeper understanding of this ancient art form. Our expert guides will take them on a fun and educational exploration of our exhibits\, including vibrant pottery\, intricate sculptures\, and fascinating artifacts from different regions of Asia. \nChildren will learn about the art and traditions of China\, Japan\, Indian and other countries and discover how these different cultures have influenced each other over time. They will get to see real artifacts\, learn about their history and meaning\, and even create their own art inspired by what they have seen. \nOur tour guides are specially trained to engage children of all ages and make learning fun and interactive. We use stories\, games\, and other activities to help children connect with the art and cultures they are learning about. \nNot only is this program educational\, but it’s also a fun way for kids to experience the museum. They’ll have the chance to ask questions\, interact with exhibits\, and engage with other kids who share their curiosity. Please register below. \nIn-Person Registration \nLivestream Registration \nJoin us for an in-depth look at the Newberry’s rich holdings of choirbooks from colonial Mexico\, which combined European forms with Indigenous traditions to produce new spiritual music. \nThis roundtable discussion will examine the books and music from three diverse perspectives: music historian Ireri Chávez-Bárcenas will illuminate the cultural context of the music\, art historian Claudia Brittenham will consider the material aspects of the Newberry’s large-scale books\, and renowned early music vocalist Ellen Hargis will share the experience of researching and performing the music today. Clips of recordings of music from these historic books will serve as the soundtrack for the conversation. \nThis event is cosponsored by the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation.

Starting off at the Museum\, you’ll explore the national story of the Green Book through our exhibition before taking a bus into the city to see the real-life buildings and companies listed in the book. Dilla will join the tour in Bronzeville\, sharing his unique take on the history and impact of the neighborhood. By the end you’ll understand why he always says “Everything dope comes from Chicago.” \nThis program begins at Illinois Holocaust Museum at 11 am\, rain or shine. Refreshments will be provided. \nJoin as we transcribe handwritten letters from the Newberry’s collections for National Volunteer Week! You’ll get a chance to use our crowdsourcing site\, Newberry Transcribe\, to unlock first-hand accounts of history by creating searchable text for primary sources. \nIn addition\, you’ll read letters from the peak of the settlement house era written by prominent reformers such as Graham Taylor and Jane Addams. Expert librarians and curators at the Newberry will also share their expertise on early-20th century social activism. \nNo transcribing experience is necessary! Everyone is welcome.
