SUMMARY:Midwest Bonsai Society 18th May Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Having started in 2004\, our Spring show is smaller than our August Exhibition but is well worth the trip. We will have 7 tree vendors and 4 ceramic pottery vendors as well as a booth from the Cactus & Succulent Society. Vendors offer an amazing selection of trees\, accent plants\, pots\, tools and literature. There will be workshops on Variegated Junipers\, Texas Ebony’s and Itoigawa Junipers\, as well as our popular Children’s Bonsai Styling Workshop. Midwest Bonsai will be selling memberships and gear\, and raffling a styled Japanese Silverberry tree. The show theme is education\, so trees-in-training are displayed and members bring trees in various stages of development with explanations. The Exhibit is held in Burnstein Hall in the Regenstein Center at Chicago Botanic Garden. The spectacular Garden bonsai trees will be displayed in both courtyards. See you there!

SUMMARY:3rd Fridays Free Admission Museum Night
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission Museum Nights take place every third Friday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm! The tour will start at 6 PM on time. All tours depart from the reception desk\, and please be sure to arrive on time. The event offers wine and appetizers. \nThis Friday at 7-7:40 PM\, our Resident Artist 2024 – Irene Hsiao will perform at the Heritage Museum of Asian Art as part of the project If The Sky Could Dream.  \nAbout the Tour –  \nLearn about Asian Art in the Heritage Museum of Asian Art with a guided hour-long tour around the gallery. Museum-trained interns and volunteers will give a talk on selected artworks. Each word is packed with fascinating insights\, information\, and stories. During this participatory experience\, you’ll connect with works from across the collection and get a close look at highlighting artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. \nPlease note tours may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \nAbout the project –  \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. This creature is emblematic of China as well as a mythological being for many Asian and Western cultures and thus evokes a sense of mysticism\, and intrigue in many communities. Representing the Chinese Dragon as a water deity\, the installation series will feature images and projections of the weather and local bodies of water in Chicago. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. Find out more through our website. \nAccessibility \nThe Heritage Museum of Asian Art’s Entrance is on West 35th Street. Take the elevator to the third floor and turn right to the Museum Reception Desk. Accessible and standard toilets are located on the same floor. Free parking space is available next to the museum via West 35th Street. \nIf you have any programming questions\, don’t hesitate to get in touch with info@heritageasianart.org or 312-842-8884.

SUMMARY:On-Site Commemoration: Echoes of Remembrance - The Holocaust in Thessaloniki

SUMMARY:2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Pritzker Architecture Prize and the Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture present “Community: The Architect as Catalyst for Change\,” the 2024 Laureate Lecture and Panel Discussion\, in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Center\, taking place at the university’s historic S.R. Crown Hall \nRiken Yamamoto\, 2024 Laureate of the Pritzker Prize\, will uncover his personal journey in the discovery of communities throughout the world\, inspiring his socially-driven architecture that blurs the boundaries between public and private dimensions. \n“Whether he designs private houses or public infrastructure\, schools or fire stations\, city halls or museums\, the common and convivial dimension is always present. His constant\, careful and substantial attention to community has generated public interworking space systems that incentivize people to convene in different ways\,” states the 2024 Jury Citation\, in part. \nFollowing the lecture\, Yamamoto will be joined by recent Laureates\, David Chipperfield (2023)\, Francis Kéré (2022) and Anne Lacaton (2021)\, who will engage in a personal conversation about their very different paths of life. Sharing a deep commitment to the value of the social system\, they will discuss the responsibility of the architect as a catalyst for change and debate respective challenges of creating and bridging communities as they shape new approaches to the design of the built environment. \nLearn more about Riken Yamamoto and the Pritzker Prize here. \nThe event is free and open to the public but capacity will be limited and registration is required. Seating is first come\, first served\, and once the venue is full\, attendees will be seated downstairs to view a live stream of the event.

SUMMARY:If the Sky Could Dream: Interactive Installation\, Performance\, & Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Museum of Asian Art is collaborating with 2024 Resident Artist Irene Hsiao to create a new interactive installation\, performance\, and workshop series called If the Sky Could Dream. Coinciding with the Lunar Year of the Dragon\, the museum will showcase dragon artworks from throughout Asia\, as well as include an original\, contemporary vision of the dragon from an Asian American perspective by Hsiao.\n\nIf the Sky Could Dream combines drawing\, painting\, dance\, found materials and found spaces at the museum to reveal and celebrate the dragons among us—structural\, ancestral\, architectural\, internal\, and environmental. Because the dragon is a water deity in Chinese culture\, this work also features projections of the waters of Chicago: Lake Michigan\, the Chicago River\, and the lakes\, ponds\, and lagoons of Chicago Parks. \nDates:\nFriday\, Feb 9\, 6:00 – 8:30 PM: Preview of the Dragon Exhibition\nSaturday\, Feb 10\, 11:00AM-12:00PM: Dragon Exhibition Opening Ceremony\nFriday\, Feb 16\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM: 3rd Friday with Irene Hsiao\nFriday\, Mar 15\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM: 3rd Friday with Irene Hsiao\nSaturday\, Mar 16\, 1:00 – 3:00PM: If the Sky Could Dream Workshop – Series One\nFriday\, Apr 19\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM: 3rd Friday with Irene Hsiao\nSaturday\, May 11\, 1:00 – 3:00PM: If the Sky Could Dream Workshop – Series Two\n\nIf the Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. \nJoin the HMAA’s Artist in Residence Irene Hsiao for a performance with guest musician Menghua Guan\, following with an insightful artist conversation about the process behind her project\, IF THE SKY COULD  DREAM. Attendees will explore the details of Hsiao’s project through the lens of the artist herself\, learning about installation and performance art and how it relates to the HMAA’s current exhibition Year of the Dragon: Early China to LEGO. \nIF THE SKY COULD DREAM focuses on the Chinese dragon as a powerful being that fosters harmony. \nPlease note that events may be canceled or postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. \n“AAPI Heritage Month Cultural Festival 2024” is sponsored by Chicago Community Trust. \nIf The Sky Could Dream is supported\, in part\, by a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant. \nAbout Irene Hsiao \nIrene Hsiao creates performances in conversation with visual art in museums\, galleries\, and public spaces\, a practice that includes site-specific interaction with visual artworks and experimental engagement with artists\, institutions\, and the public. SUMMARY:Carlos Moreno on the Livable City
DESCRIPTION:A special program featuring Professor Carlos Moreno\, the man who coined the term 15-Minute City to describe an urbanist movement that encourages walkable\, accessible and dynamic neighborhoods. \nDuring the Pandemic\, as a result of working from home\, many people rediscovered their own neighborhoods and all that they offer and don’t offer. Not coincidentally\, this is when the 15-Minute City took the world by storm. The 15-Minute City is rooted in the tried-and-true Urbanism of our oldest cities. It encourages bringing offices\, shops\, restaurants\, entertainment and essential services closer to where people live\, while providing an inviting environment for walking\, biking and strengthening social connections. The concept has also been touted as a way for cities to build back from the pandemic in more resilient ways. \nDuring this program\, learn about the movement’s origins and core principles\, and its rapid adoption by cities like Paris\, Shanghai\, Buenos Aires\, and Houston. Also discover how these ideas are beginning to influence urban policy and community development in Chicago’s neighborhoods and downtown. \nThis program is part of our Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns exhibition series exploring key themes for the future of downtowns. \nProgram Speaker: Carlos Moreno \nUniversity Professor and Researcher\, Carlos Moreno earned international recognition as a scientist with an innovative mind\, pioneer works and unique approach to urban issues. He is also a scientific advisor of national and international figures of the highest level. He works at the heart of issues of international significance as a result of his research\, bringing an innovative perspective on urban issues and offering solutions to the issues faced by the cities in the 21st century. Some of his concepts have traveled the world: the ‘Human Smart City’\, the ’15-Minute City’ and the ’30-Minute Territory’.  In 2022\, he led the launch of the Global Observatory of Sustainable Proximities at the World Urban Forum with UN-Habitat\, C40 Cities\, UCLG and other partners. His latest book\, “The 15-Minute City: A Solution to Saving Our Time and Our Planet\,” is published by Wiley (May\, 2024).
