DESCRIPTION:Join us for another cooking class series either online or in person. In April we will be making crepes. For the online class you will receive the recipe in advance. You can then either cook alongside or watch and try later. It is an interactive Zoom so you will be able to ask questions. The in person class takes four participants and is a hands on class. Cost for the in person class is $25 for Museum members and $35 for non members. The online class is $10 for members and $15 for non members.

Be sure to join us on Sunday\, April 24th at 7:00pm for a panel discussion with filmmakers Costa Boutsikaris and Dr. Michael Kotutwa Johnson. *All links will be emailed before April 22nd. \n  \nInhabitants: Indigenous Perspectives on Restoring Our World \nFor millennia Native Americans successfully stewarded and shaped their landscapes\, but centuries of colonization have disrupted their ability to maintain their traditional land management practices. From deserts\, coastlines\, forests\, mountains\, and prairies\, Native communities across the US are restoring their ancient relationships with the land. The five stories include sustaining traditions of Hopi dryland farming in Arizona; restoring buffalo to the Blackfeet reservation in Montana; maintaining sustainable forestry on the Menominee reservation in Wisconsin; reviving native food forests in Hawaii; and returning prescribed fire to the landscape by the Karuk Tribe of California. SUMMARY:The Bridge to Native Chicago
DESCRIPTION:The Bridge to Native Chicago\nMembers of RedLine\, a local Chicago Native American Drum group\, and interdisciplinary artist Ronnie Preston (San Carlos Apache)\, along with jazz musicians from France\, collectively known as The Bridge\, will be the featured musicians for this unique collaboration.\n\nThe Bridge intends to form a network for exchange\, production\, and diffusion\, to build a transatlantic bridge that will be crossed on a regular basis by French and American musicians as part of collaborative projects. And\, in addition to the scheduled projects\, encourage meetings and relationships between creative musicians and perpetuate them. In other words: to give them the times and spaces to join and rejoin on both sides of the ocean and to deepen their exchanges.\n\nRedLine is a group of intertribal singers who perform songs from the great Oklahoma Nations of the Southern Plains. RedLine formed in 2012 to address a vital need for a community-based Drum. This action was necessary as it created resurgence in arts engagement needed to mobilize and build community and introduce/reintroduce cultural practice among youth and young adults in the Native American community. Through song\, RedLine shares a small taste of southern plains culture with Chicago and the Midwest big water area\, while providing a circle for intergenerational teaching and learning.\n\nChampion grass dancer and hoop dancer\, singer\, storyteller\, and accomplished artist\, Ronnie Preston is dedicated to sharing the cultures of Native American tribes and nations through music and dance. As a performing artist and spokesperson\, Mr. Preston has toured from coast to coast\, frequently as a guest on college campuses. A descendant of the San Carlos Apache nation in Arizona\, he began dancing and attending pow wow celebrations as a young child. Now residing in Chicago\, he is a celebrated teacher\, performer throughout the Midwest\, a guest for events at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and other venues\, and performer and emcee for pow wows and many other presentations celebrating Native American culture.

DESCRIPTION:An immersive fund raiser concert featuring music\, visual arts\, perfumery\, and gastronomy to help Ukraine in its time of need.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIn The Realm Of Senses presents its fully immersive duo version of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition for two players and seven instruments with works by Ukrainian born composers Skoryk\, Yashchenko\, Bortkiewicz and Prokofiev\, presented by Chinese-American\, Russian-American and Belarusian-Americans who support Ukraine’s fight for freedom and peace. This concert will feature visual projections paired to music by many Chicago-based international artists as well as two perfume pairings to music by Christophe Laudamiel\, and dessert pairings by local chefs. We will perform various works by Ukrainian-born composers including first movement of Prokofiev’s violin sonata No.1 and end with the “Great Gate of Kiev” movement from Pictures\, paired to a unique perfume. Music and art transcends all and will bring people of all backgrounds together to support Ukraine in its great time of need. \nOur co-sponsors are Epiphany Center for the Arts and Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art\, who will be donating the venue for this event and helping us bring the word to the Ukrainian and Chicago communities at large. All proceeds will go towards vetted charities to directly support Ukraine. DESCRIPTION:The Pretzel Blitz is back!\n\nWe are hosting 5 pretzel making classes in April. Why? We LOVE pretzels! These pretzel-making classes will be offered in-person. We will host up to 20 students in our industrial kitchen at the DANK Haus. These 20 students will get hands on training from Reinhard Richter\, our resident Pretzel Meister\, and take home their homemade pretzels at the end of the class.\n\nWe have 5 classes to choose from. The April 29th class will be taught entirely in German (auf Deutsch)! All students will get the recipe and be able to communicate directly with our chef.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Sichtverrückt.Lost and Found
DESCRIPTION:German artist Beate Axmann’s concept “Sicht.Verrückt” translates roughly to gaze\, shifted. It is a directive to look not once\, not twice\, but thrice\, even four times. In today’s atmosphere of rising extremism and polemics (in Germany and abroad)\, it is critical to shift one’s gaze––to look at issues from multiple angles. Sichtverrückt is the overarching theme that Beate Axmann has used for the whole of her artistic work since 2018.\n \nAxmann is from the Black Forest region of Germany and works in acrylic paint on canvas\, paper\, and wood as well as ink on paper. Her subjects include people (especially women)\, nature\, the Black Forest\, and the continuum of human cultures that she greets on her travels. Collaboration and cooperation with others are centrally important to Axmann. \nAxmann’s show will run through May 20\, and will include public programs such as: \n\nPanel discussion with Joanna Pinsky of Art Encounter\n2 live performances in which Axmann will create collaborative paintings with Joanna Pinsky and Sergio Gomez\nAll-ages art workshops (which Axmann will lead\, speaking German!) in which you will create 1 or 2 experimental collages\n\nContinue to check dankhaus.com/art and our Facebook events for event details.

Jennifer Keating  is a Senior Lecturer and the Writing in the Disciplines Specialist in the William S. Dietrich II Institute for Writing Excellence. Most recently\, she served as Assistant Dean for Educational Initiatives in the Dietrich College for Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. In addition to leading and recording with his own jazz ensembles\, he is a member of several others and an in-demand player in the city’s jazz\, funk\, Latin jazz and salsa scenes.

DESCRIPTION:Join HAMOC and SAMDI for an artist talk and Q&A.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nSAMDI is a contemporary Haïtian artist based in Miami. His work\, described by the artist as Sen Soley. Painting from a rhythm. A space where self is looking inwards and possibilities are endless. His work consists of cubist style portraits and a semi abstract approach to figuration. \nSelf exploration and the understanding of the spirit as a human in this space are at the core of SAMDI’s artistic practice. His work can reflect deep emotional trauma and at the same time express the beauty of love. The artist lets the audience be the author of their experience as they have to search inwards to make sense of what they are viewing or feeling.

DESCRIPTION:This is part of NIAM’s series of programs for E/Merge: Art of the Indian Diaspora. \nUsing very different materials\, processes\, forms\, and strategies\, artists Sarika Goulatia\, Rit Premnath\, and Kaveri Raina each considers and depicts dualities in their works. \nModerator Ambika Trasi will lead the artists in a discussion of their interpretations of the dualities of absence/presence\, location/dislocation\, growth/decay\, hovering/being held through various means and entry points\, from architecture\, to abstraction\, to language/poetry. \nTime: 𝟏𝟎:𝟑𝟎𝐚𝐦 – 𝟏𝟏:𝟒𝟓𝐚𝐦 𝐂𝐓\n𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐳𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭.\nFor enquiries: info@niam.org \n𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐆𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚 was born in India and earned a masters in textile design and development there. E/Merge features her installation “sometimes forgotten\, sometimes remembered; the tribulations and afflictions never erased.” \n𝐒𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐢𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡 is a Bangalore-born\, Brooklyn-based artist\, educator\, and editor of Shifter Magazine.​​ His recent installations and videos have focused on how our occupation of space and endurance through time is shaped by systems of power and control. \n𝐊𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚 is from New Delhi (India)\, she received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Kaveri Raina’s paintings are based on internal dialogues\, with words that trigger a feeling or an experience. \n𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐢\, the panel moderator\, is an artist\, arts organizer\, and writer based in Brooklyn\, NY. Her multidisciplinary\, research-based practice considers the coloniality of power within images and sites. DESCRIPTION:“First Blacks Chicago” is a celebration of Black Chicago trailblazers! “First Blacks Chicago” was created by the Haitian American Museum of Chicago (HAMOC)\, and in 2019 HAMOC invited Crossing Borders Music’s participation in this ongoing historic project. Be among the first people to hear “Ogou Wa dè Zanj\,” (“Ogou\, King of Angels”)\, a new piece we commissioned of Jean Paul Coffy! Coffy is a former lead artist of Boukman Eksperyans\, the Grammy-nominated\, legendary Haitian roots music group\, and he joins on piano!\nHear also the reflective “Nostalgia” by Rudy Perrault\, honoring DuSable; the “natif” style of Gifrants’s “Fraternitas! Fraternitas! Dei Patris Nomine\,” a musical tribute to Harold Washington; and the elegance and beauty of Sabrina C D Jean Louis’ “La Cité\,” a tribute to the legacy of DuSable\, and a piece prompted by the work of Chicago’s DuSable Heritage Association. Hear too Rudy Perrault’s “Brother Malcolm” as he imagines\, through music\, a conversation between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King in response to the inauguration of Barack Obama. SUMMARY:Amin Gulgee Performance: “Kiss of the Spider Woman”
DESCRIPTION:The South Asia Institute will host Amin Gulgee Performance “Kiss of the Spider Woman”.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThis will be a collaborative performance work with 13-17 participants which will take place over a period of 77 minutes. The approach will be cross-disciplinary as Gulgee will engage actors\, dancers\, visual artists and musicians to work with him. This will be an experiential event and the audience will navigate through the space as the performances simultaneously occur around them. All the senses will be engaged in this journey of touch\, sight\, hearing\, smell and taste. Through these senses information is sent to the brain to help us understand the world around us. Installations and projections will be employed emotively. This will be an act of collective dreaming. As Yoko Ono famously said: “A dream you dream alone is only a dream; a dream you dream together is a reality.”
