SUMMARY:Riddim Rite of Passage: A Sound Activation with Ajmal 'Mas Man' Millar
DESCRIPTION:Artist Ajmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar will facilitate a participatory sound activation referencing his Trinidadian heritage. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nWe invite you to join us with artist Ajmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar for a special rite of passage participatory sound activation using found metal\, which the artist uses often within their practice. Traditionally\, rites of passages have functioned as a critical tool of individual rejuvenation and cultural interconnection. \nAjmal’s use of metal within this program is inspired by and symbolic of the ‘riddim section’\, which is specifically linked to African diaspora percussions. \nEach participant is encouraged to bring found metal (without sharp edges) that they have access to. The session will encompass: \n– Introductions and group welcome where each participant will share their found objects with the group \n– Several exercises to build cognition\, individuality\, improvisation\, and harmony. \n– Ajmal will also provide a variety of metal rods and wooden sticks used to strike the metal\, thus collectively producing waves of sound in the likeness of steel drums. \n***The session will be sonically recorded\, and video documented.

SUMMARY:Art Talk: "Gunnar Widforss\, Painter of the National Parks"
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Alan Petersen\n\nThrough the Roaring Twenties and the first half of the Great Depression\, the Swedish-born landscape painter Gunnar Widforss (1879-1934) focused his discerning eye and passionate energy on the national parks of the American West. Due to Widforss’ untimely death at only age 55\, and because the rise of modernism in the early-twentieth century consigned many highly skilled realistic painters to obscurity\, Widforss’ legacy is largely unknown today. The amiable Swede led a bohemian life in search of beautiful and challenging landscapes to paint. Widforss dressed formally as he worked and always attracted wonder-struck onlookers when he painted in Yosemite Valley\, on the rim of Grand Canyon\, and the other locations he favored in the national parks. Park Service friends such as Ansel Hall and Stephen Mather\, as well as tourists\, marveled at the accuracy of his painting and the compelling way in which he was able to capture the dramatic landscapes. Widforss never resorted to sentimental or romanticized depictions\, so prevalent in depictions of western subjects. He very well may be viewed as one of the greatest artists to paint the West and his obscurity is a paradox. The story of Widforss’ life and work is one of great triumph in realistic painting\, and the tragedy of his anonymity and death is a captivating story of a Swedish expatriate who fell in love with the American landscape.\n\nToday\, Widforss’ work is known only to a small number of dedicated collectors\, the descendants of his family and friends\, and those who discover his gem-like paintings when they visit the national parks he depicted.\n\nCurator and author Alan Petersen has been uncovering Widforss’ fascinating story. He has published a catalogue raisonné of Widforss’ works and is working on a monograph on the artist. The catalogue raisonné is available online at gunnarwidforss.org.\n\nAlan Petersen\, Curator of Fine Arts for the Museum of Northern Arizona\, worked on the South Rim of Grand Canyon for three years before moving to Flagstaff to attend NAU in 1980. Alan has curated exhibitions of work by such notable artists as Gunnar Widforss\, Joella Jean Mahoney\, Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton\, Merrill Mahaffey\, Bruce Aiken\, Ed Mell\, and Curt Walters\, among many others.\n\nAlan recently published the Gunnar Widforss Catalogue Raisonné (2020) and continues his work on a monograph on Widforss’ life and art. In 2018\, he co-curated an exhibition of the artist’s work in collaboration with the Ljunbergmuseet in Sweden.\nBefore retiring\, Alan taught art history\, drawing\, and courses pertaining to the Colorado\nPlateau region at Coconino Community College in Flagstaff since 1992. His own art work explores the sources of uranium in Grand Canyon.\n\nThis is a free event with fika for sale.\nTo make a reservation please email museum@samac.org or call 773.782.8111

SUMMARY:Citizens' History of Bronzeville
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of lively discussion and discovery of Bronzeville citizens’ history\, culture\, and creativity. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nAbout the project: Bronzeville residents\, alumni\, elders\, and interested scholars will participate in workshops at the Jacob H. Carruthers Center to tell\, write\, and share what we know or have learned about Bronzeville’s rich history. We’ll delve into our own knowledge of this thriving African-American community’s cultural\, artistic\, and social development to share this important history with one another\, with the young people in our neighborhood schools\, and with a wider American audience of visitors to the area. Bronzeville’s story is a significant part of this country’s overall history\, a part too often left out. The recollections and accounts will be curated as a permanent display at the Carruthers Center Library for residents\, visitors\, and young people to learn about their valuable heritage.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception of "Yuge Zhou: Moon Drawings"
DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to announce the fourth exhibition of the Spotlight Series\, featuring artist Yuge Zhou. Please join us on Saturday\, September 3\, from 3pm-6pm CT for the opening reception. This exhibition will run from September 3 through October 16. Collateral programs of the exhibition include a poetry session in collaboration with the Chicago Poetry Center and a sound performance by local sound artists Kikù Hibino and Chien-An Yuan. \nRSVP for the opening reception here \nIn Yuge Zhou’s ongoing video series Moon Drawings\, we watch her dragging a suitcase in concentric circles through the winter snow and a summer beach under the moonlight in Chicago. The videos were created during the global pandemic travel bans\, and inspired by a Han Dynasty legend about missing loved ones in a faraway land. Much of Zhou’s recent work centers around the great physical and emotional distance between China and America\, two lands she calls home. \nThe Spotlight Series is a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago. \nAbout the artist\nZhou has exhibited nationally and internationally in prominent art and public venues with an upcoming premiere of her dance film Love Letters at Art on theMART\, a nightly public art projection onto the facade of the Merchandise Mart\, Chicago. Recent awards include Juried Award in the installation category at ArtPrize 2021\, Artist Fellowship Award in Media Arts from the Illinois Arts Council and Honorary Mention in the 2020 Prix Ars Electronica in Linz\, Austria. SUMMARY:A Show of Hands: Handwriting in the Age of Print
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, handwriting served as a powerful tool for communicating information\, preserving knowledge\, shaping identity\, and building empires. In our digital world\, however\, fewer and fewer people can read handwritten words. \nHandwriting has survived disruptive technologies before. The invention of printing did not diminish the need for handwriting. Instead\, it created new markets for ambitious printers and entrepreneurial writing teachers. These men and women used advances in print technologies to widen the influence of handwriting in everyday life. \nA Show of Hands focuses on people\, cultures\, and technology to illustrate how handwriting has been taught\, reproduced\, and reimagined over the past five hundred years. Displaying a range of books and manuscripts from the Newberry’s collection\, the exhibition makes the role of handwriting in the age of print newly legible. \nA Show of Hands is generously supported by the Richard C. von Hess Foundation\, the Fitzgerald Family Foundation\, and Diane and Richard Weinberg.
