SUMMARY:West Side Parks and Their Architects
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chicago Architecture Center on August 28 at 12 p.m. for. virtual exploration of Jens Jensen’s Columbus Park and Alfred Caldwell’s Riis Park—two influential landscape designs inspired by our city’s prehistoric shoreline and the region’s rich ecology.\n\n\nJensen designed Columbus Park in 1917\, seizing the opportunity for a clean-slate design in his last major park project in Chicago. Caldwell\, on the other hand\, designed Riis Park in 1936 using principles of the Prairie School inspired landscape to create an intimate space on a glacial ridge within a larger park focused on active recreation. Join us online as we examine these influential projects. Register below. \nTom Drebenstedt has been a CAC docent for 35+ years\, engaging in docent leadership roles in addition to initiating several popular CAC tours\, including the “Chicago Bungalow Belt” bus tours\, and walks through Pilsen and Humboldt Park. Tom balances his love for being a docent with a career in construction\, working on Symphony Center and the Art Institute of Chicago’s Modern Wing. He also loves his own Galewood bungalow and garden.

SUMMARY:Through Fish Eyes
DESCRIPTION:This event is FREE and open to the public. \nTHROUGH FISH EYES: A DANCE PRODUCTION THAT COMBINES ART\, SCIENCE\, AND A CALL TO ACTION \n“Through Fish Eyes” is a unique performance that utilizes dance to create awareness of and evoke empathy in audiences about our dwindling marine ecosystems. This art-science-dance work follows the relationship between mankind and the ocean\, starting at a time when man lived in harmony with nature and ending with the current fragmented world. It brings a voice to water which is all around us in so many forms. The once abundant and thriving ocean has been ravaged by humans. The relationship between man and water is no longer sacred and the damage is done. Humanity is the hand that has been destroyed\, but can it now be the hand of change? \nThis work was initially conceptualized by Kasi Aysola & Madhvi Venkatesh. Research and fieldwork was done at the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns\, Australia. The creative development of this piece has been funded by the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative\, The Boston Foundation\, and the Boston Cultural Council. \n” \nThrough Fish Eyes’ cannot be classified merely as a Bharatanatyam piece – though it has fast-paced rhythmic sections drawn from the art form’s toolkit. It cannot be classified as a Nature drama – though it has marvelous depictions of marine life. It cannot be classified as romantic yearning for the past – though it portrays the idyllic times of yore. At best\, ‘Through Fish Eyes’ can be considered a Call to Arms. It is a devastating depiction of the present and an urgent beseeching to imagine new futures.” – Aditya Venkataraman\, Narthaki.com \n“Transported to a faraway place…dynamic music\, intricate movements\, percussive detailed footwork impressed a story that was well thought out and executed” -Raquel Lake\, Dance Metro DC \nThis project has been funded by the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative\, The Boston Foundation’s Live Arts Boston program\, and the Boston Cultural Council. SUMMARY:Disruptors Exhibition - Celebrating 50 Years of Chicago Women in Architecture
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition celebrates the legacy of Chicago women who have shaped architecture and design industries in the Windy City and beyond through the lens of the 50th anniversary of the Chicago Women in Architecture (CWA) professional group. \nDISRUPTERS showcases the trailblazing founders of CWA\, who 50 years ago broke through the barriers of a male-dominated industry. These pioneers\, lacking their own space\, sat on the floor of an office to conceive of an organization that would support and uplift women in architecture. The exhibition traces CWA’s journey over the past five decades\, celebrating the progress the group has made and its lasting impact on the field while taking a look at the splinter groups that emerged from CWA\, some more disruptive than others. \nThe exhibit was developed in partnership with CWA\, Wink Design\, Ross Barney Architects\, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
