SUMMARY:Online Artist Talk: SAMDI
DESCRIPTION:Join HAMOC and SAMDI for an artist talk and Q&A.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nSAMDI is a contemporary Haïtian artist based in Miami. His work\, described by the artist as Sen Soley. Painting from a rhythm. A space where self is looking inwards and possibilities are endless. His work consists of cubist style portraits and a semi abstract approach to figuration. \nSelf exploration and the understanding of the spirit as a human in this space are at the core of SAMDI’s artistic practice. His work can reflect deep emotional trauma and at the same time express the beauty of love. The artist lets the audience be the author of their experience as they have to search inwards to make sense of what they are viewing or feeling.

SUMMARY:Amin Gulgee Performance: “Kiss of the Spider Woman”
DESCRIPTION:The South Asia Institute will host Amin Gulgee Performance “Kiss of the Spider Woman”.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThis will be a collaborative performance work with 13-17 participants which will take place over a period of 77 minutes. The approach will be cross-disciplinary as Gulgee will engage actors\, dancers\, visual artists and musicians to work with him. This will be an experiential event and the audience will navigate through the space as the performances simultaneously occur around them. All the senses will be engaged in this journey of touch\, sight\, hearing\, smell and taste. Through these senses information is sent to the brain to help us understand the world around us. Installations and projections will be employed emotively. This will be an act of collective dreaming. As Yoko Ono famously said: “A dream you dream alone is only a dream; a dream you dream together is a reality.”

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Dr. Don Grossnickle - My Maja: A Grandson's Tribute
DESCRIPTION:My Maja\, A Swedish-American Proud Grandson’s Tribute by Chicago’s Dr. Don Grossnickle \nMaja\, a young roaring twenties Swedish adventurer set sail on a luxury steamship to New York and on to Chicago in 1922 for a visit to relatives. Maja fell in love and spent the rest of her life pursuing the American Dream. Adversity challenges were extreme for a widowed single mother of three balancing long hours as a night nurse and running a boarding house. Ups and downs while being alone in a hostile struggling America during the Great Depression almost killed her. Maja claimed her Swedish upbringing\, character and faith carried the day. History has not taken note of the great guts\, gumption\, perseverance\, determination of Swedish women immigrants. The book\, My Maja\,-is meant to awaken history and to keep Maja’s\, “framåtanda” fully alive forever. \nCome and chat with Don Grossnickle about the Swedish-American Spirit living in each of us today. To register for this event you an email museum@samac.org or call 773.728.8111. Fika (coffee and treats) will be available for purchase.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Wanting it Both Ways
DESCRIPTION:The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is delighted to announce a new group exhibition titled Wanting it Both Ways\, featuring mixed media works by Bill Conger\, Tanya Hastings Gill\, Mie Kongo\, and Jennifer Mannebach. \nBefore it became synonymous with a defect or shortcoming\, the etymology of the word “flaw” related to a fragment\, splinter\, or piece of something\, and was closely associated with the idea  of a stray ember.  A fragment or “flaw” as a spark\, a glowing ember\, is an incendiary condition  quite different from the more typical notion of a fragment as a leftover or remnant. \nThese insistent fragments may preserve a fleeting moment or memory; something that is not embalmed in time but is a flickering touchstone to revisit and find more–more permutations\, more iterations\, and more potentialities. These artists contend with the desire to capture a sense of the fugitive\, often  manifesting in fragmented forms that speak to the interdependence of things. They are acutely  aware of how small altercations can shift things substantially\, looking at the interplay of material  identities\, as well as the relationship between the maker and the materials. \nThis practice of working with forms and ideas can result in work that can feel like a temporary  capture— revealing the desire to have it both ways\, to hold still for a moment in time\, just long  enough to see what gathers at the edges before releasing it into another recombinant state. \n  \nExhibition runs through June 4

SUMMARY:Online Curator Talk: Tova Brandt
DESCRIPTION:New Nordic Cuisine is currently on display at the Swedish American Museum. In this virtual talk we get to meet with Tova Brandt who is the Executive Director of the Museum of Danish America in Iowa. The Museum of Danish American curated the exhibit. \nAbout the exhibit:\nThe cooking traditions and innovations of the Nordic region have captured the attention of the world and inspired chefs and home cooks alike.  In 2004 the Nordic Food Manifesto articulated a set of values for approaching food through the lenses of local production\, seasonality\, tradition\, and innovation\, among others.  The manifesto and reactions to it have sparked a robust dialog about food culture\, both in the Nordic countries and around the world.
