DESCRIPTION:Join Surinder Martignetti Frank Konrath from See Chicago Dance and Kate Flynn the Chicago Collections Consortium as they discuss the work of creating digital and hybrid events and exhibitions in the context of reevaluating our attitudes and understanding of these mediums. They’ll also consider how they can be thought of and seen as resources for future arts and cultural endeavors. Moderated by Suzy Kahn Winberg of Big Shoulder Stories. \nSpeakers:\nSurinder Martignetti\, Community Engagement Manager for See Chicago Dance\, Arts Ninja\, and Consulting Producer\nSurinder Martignetti holds a BA in Dance and Theater and a Graduate Diploma in Education from Western Sydney University in Australia. She also holds a Masters Degree in Arts\, Entertainment\, from Columbia College Chicago. Surinder has deep knowledge of the Chicago dance field and has served as part of See Chicago Dance in various program management capacities since 2013. Other career highlights include roles with the Chicago Dancing Festival\, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago\, The Art Institute of Chicago\, Chicago Ideas Week and The International Music Foundation. Along with her life as an arts administrator\, she is a dancer\, jewelry maker\, poet\, and storyteller\, she also performs under the alias Miss Mittens. \nFrank Konrath\, Media Specialist at See Chicago Dance\, Transmedia Producer and Founder of Clovispoint \nKate Flynn\, Portal Manager for Chicago Collections Consortium\nKate Flynn (she/her) is the Portal Manager for the Chicago Collections Consortium and also the Digital Programs & Metadata Project Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She previously was a Resident Librarian at the University of Illinois at Chicago for Digital Programs & Services. She earned an MSI from the University Of Michigan School Of Information in 2011\, specializing in Preservation of Information and Archives & Records Management. She is most interested in issues around digital preservation\, user experience and metadata. \nModerator:\nSuzy Kahn Weinberg\, Executive Producer of Big Shoulders Stories\nA writer\, producer and active community leader Suzy (she/her) has had many roles in her personal and professional career that all center on the power of storytelling. Suzy is currently a co-producer of a monthly live storytelling series called ​Is this a thing?​\, now in its 9th year\, featuring true personal narratives told on stage. She is a founding member and creator of the show– conducting writing workshops\, coaching performers\, and hosting the events when she isn’t herself performing an original story. Big Shoulders Stories​ is Suzy’s latest venture\, partnering with Chicago’s nonprofit organizations to identify\, nurture\, and showcase storytellers and their stories.

DESCRIPTION:On March 25th\, we commemorate Greek Independence Day. Two hundred and one years ago\, the Greek struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire began. The Greek fight to end four hundred years of Ottoman Turkish oppression attracted the attention and support of people around the world. Consequently\, the Greek War of Independence became the first in line of “freedom struggles\,” in which a national or civil war for independence or sovereignty attracted would-be freedom fighters from around the world. \nIn this special NHM Discussion\, we will explore why the Greek War of Independence ignited such passion in non-Greeks and how the legacy of “Greek Freedom” served to create the idea of a universal “cause of freedom” that transcends national and ethnic borders. \nThis event will be recorded.

She holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Master of Science in Business from Cardinal Stritch University.\n \nJoe Imholte\, Executive Vice President\, Bakken Museum\nJoe is the Executive Vice President of The Bakken Museum in Minneapolis and has over 25 years of museum experience. He is a Board member of the Informal Learning Leadership Collaborative\, a peer reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums’ accreditation and assessment programs\, a recipient of an IMTY award from the International Museum Theater Alliance\, a trained racial justice facilitator\, and a Qualified Administrator for Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). \nModerator:\nCharity Counts\, Executive Director\, Association of Midwest Museums\nCharity is the Executive Director of the Association of Midwest Museums\, a non-profit professional service organization supporting museums in 8 Midwestern states. Charity’s career in the museum sector began in collections at Minnetrista\, a mid-size museum in Muncie\, Indiana\, where she went on to lead their mostly volunteer exhibit team. While working on her Masters in Museum Studies\, Charity landed a position at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis\, the world’s largest children’s museum. We’ll explore the types of financial reports that should be generated for various audiences and at what frequency. We will also explore how to build a “team around the numbers” focused on financial results. Key concepts covered in this session will include: \n\nFinancial reporting best practices for board\, leadership\, and staff\nStrategies for improved communication across functions\nTelling a compelling financial story\n\n  \nSpeaker:\nGillian Gorra\, Experienced Manager\, BDO FMA \nGillian (she/her) spent over ten years as the General Manager then Managing Director of a $2.5M performing arts organization in Chicago. While in those roles\, she established and oversaw all financial and HR systems and led the annual budget development and monitoring processes. Among other accomplishments there\, she was integral in establishing a partnership with the Chicago Public Schools Real Estate department and worked to formalize the organization’s first donor acknowledgement and stewardship plan. Although we recognize ourselves as an iconic historical site for Black artistic and cultural advancement\, we continue to evolve as a contemporary hub for new thought practices\, creative practices\, and innovative frameworks being developed by a diverse array of amazing folks here in our city\, and beyond. \nAndrea and ebere’s multidisciplinary practices are informed by acts of care and storytelling\, that ultimately become actualized within the objects and projects they build out- individually and collectively. DESCRIPTION:Listen in on a conversation between representatives of Columbia College Chicago research team\, Erin McCarthy\, Heidi Marshall\, Peter Fitzpatrick\, and Jeremy Bucher of the National Hellenic Museum as they discuss their shared history in Oral History Archiving and how it has evolved to bring the collection to the public eye. \nModeling History Project – The Chicago Anti-Apartheid Movement \nSpeakers: \nErin McCarthy\, Associate Professor of History; Interim Chair Communication Department\, Columbia College Chicago \nPeter Fitzpatrick\, (he/him/his) Professor of Photography; Special Advisor Community Engagement\nOffice of the Provost\, Columbia College Chicago \nHeidi Marshall\, (she/her) Head of Archives & Special Collections\, Columbia College Chicago \nBrianna Yrene Ramirez\, (she/her) Filmmaking (BA); Archives Assistant & Intern Columbia College Chicago\nBrianna is a sophomore at Columbia College Chicago\, pursuing a Bachelors in Filmmaking. She also has a double concentration in producing and production design. She may be a film major\, but history and such have a special place in her heart. Which is why she applied to be on this project. \nAdiam Belai Woldu\, (she/her) English (BA); Archives Assistant & Intern Columbia College Chicago\nAdiam is a third-year student at Columbia College Chicago completing a B.A. in English with a minor in Cultural Studies. Personal narrative is her chief interest. She is particularly interested in recording stories about marginalized people that explore identity\, challenge dominant narratives\, and celebrate histories that often go overlooked. After graduation she plans on working as a developmental editor to assist writers in constructing their stories. \nJeremy Bucher\, Collections & Archives Manager\, National Hellenic Museum\nJeremy Bucher earned his M.A. in 20th Century United States Urban & Labor History and Public History from Loyola University Chicago in 2018. His work at the National Hellenic Museum involves the accession and preservation of the various physical and digital objects in the museum’s collection\, as well as making those objects accessible\, especially the oral history collection. Through his work with the oral history collection\, he has created presentations designed to assist individuals and members of other institutions in the creation of their own oral history projects. In collaboration with the Chicago Cultural Alliance\, Jeremy facilitated an oral history workshop in April of 2020 to provide introductory knowledge and strategies to participants interested in capturing stories from family and community members related to their experience during the pandemic. In partnership with the Chicago Cultural Alliance\, Jeremy worked on the first incarnation of the Stories of Im/migration: Chicago project\, contributing NHM resources to the Chicago Collections Consortium Explore portal. Most recently\, Jeremy participated in the Stories of Arts Resilience project\, sharing his experiences adjusting to working during the pandemic and reflecting on his time participating in CCA projects and events.

Previously\, Elizabeth was the PR manager for Chicago Shakespeare Theater\, worked in Goodman Theatre’s education department\, and was a freelance journalist for several years. Christena speaks internationally about cultural accessibility\, especially the importance of establishing a local access knowledge network in one’s own community. \nModerator:\nKarin Moen Abercrombie\, Executive Director\, Swedish American Museum\nKarin Moen Abercrombie has served as the Executive Director of the Swedish American Museum since 2006. SUMMARY:Plenary Session: Building Community\, Strengthening Cultures: Storytelling as Collective Work - In-Person at DANK Haus - Mar 21 @ 10am
DESCRIPTION:The theme for the Chicago Cultural Alliance’s Activating Heritage Conference this year is “the Stories We Tell\,” chosen not only because of the literal stories our Members tell in their work\, but also based on the “stories” and multiple ways we as cultural workers must present ourselves to carry on our duties as we work to benefit and participate in the cultural of the communities we live in. Join our panel of creatives as they discuss how their work aligns with the theme of our conference\, using and creating stories for our communities. Emmy-winning reporter Adriana Cardona-Maguigad will share her perspectives from the world of journalism\, while Sara Chapman of Media Burn will bring the insights of an archivist. Educator\, artist and storyteller Dr. Ada Cheng will facilitate the conversation and share her own perspectives and insights from her years of collaborating and creating cultural storytelling projects. \nSpeakers:\nAdriana Cardona-Maguigad\, Reporter for Curious City on WBEZ.\nAdriana is a former 2012 WBEZ Pritzker fellow and was part of the inaugural class of Northwestern University’s Social Justice News Nexus fellowship program. She worked on a 2015 award-winning audio project for WBEZ and NPR’s This American Life about unregulated drug rehab centers in Chicago drawing people from Puerto Rico. Her investigation was recognized with a Sigma Delta Chi Award with the Society of Professional Journalists\, a 2016 National Edward R. Murrow Award and three Peter Lisagor Awards.\nPrior to joining WBEZ’s education team\, Adriana worked at Univision Chicago where she was honored with two Chicago/ Midwest Emmy Awards.\nAdriana lived in Dubuque and Des Moines\, Iowa for many years. She is originally from Medellin\, Colombia and has been a Chicago resident since 2005. \nSara Chapman\, Executive Director\, Media Burn Archive\nSara Chapman (she/her) has been executive director of Media Burn since 2009\, and has been an integral part of the organization since its founding in 2003. You can catch her online at Media Burn’s biweekly Virtual Talks with Video Activists series on Thursdays. A scholar of early video and television\, her article “Guerrilla Television in the Digital Archive” was published in the Journal of Film and Video. In 2019\, she was the producer of the feature-length experimental film\, Ghosts in the Machine\, which toured internationally. She’s also an avid swimmer and former co-chair of her Masters swim team\, the Chicago Smelts. \nAda Cheng\, Visiting Associate Professor\, Asian American Studies Program\, Northwestern University\nAn educator-turned artist\, storyteller\, and creator\, Dr. Ada Cheng has utilized storytelling to illustrate structural inequities\, raise critical awareness\, and build intimate communities. Committed to amplifying and uplifting marginalized voices\, she has created numerous storytelling platforms for BIPOC and LGBTQIA community members to tell difficult and vulnerable stories based on their lived experiences. Since she resigned from her tenured position in sociology at DePaul University in 2016\, she has been featured at storytelling shows and done her two solo performances in theaters\, universities\, and conferences across the nation. Dr. Cheng has been speaker for Illinois Humanities Speakers Bureau since 2019. She is currently a visiting Associate Professor with Asian American Studies at Northwestern University as well as an adjunct faculty at Dominican University. Her interests encompass academia\, storytelling/performance\, and advocacy. \n  \nEvent will take place in-person at the DANK Haus German American Cultural Center\, 4740 N Western Ave\, in the Brauhaus Room (2nd floor). Proof of vaccination will be required to attend\, and vaccination will be confirmed upon entry. Masks must be worn indoors at all times.

SUMMARY:Laura Lynn Hsieh: Mahjong and Dumplings
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) will launch the Spotlight Series\, a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago. \nJoin us on Saturday\, March 19th from 3-6pm CT for the inaugural opening reception of Laura Lynn Hsieh: Mahjong and Dumplings featuring ceramics and video by the artist Laura Lynn Hsieh. This exhibitition will run from March 19 through April 29. \nPlease RSVP here \nAbout the artist\nLaura Lynn Hsieh is a first-generation Chinese American who doesn’t speak Chinese. \nGrowing up in an all-white\, Massachusetts town has influenced her work as much as having parents who fled their homeland during wartime and who expect her to maintain ties to a culture she has never known. As an installation artist\, Hsieh’s creative processes involve writing\, text usage\, sculptural and ceramic components\, as well as video and performance. Her work investigates notions of community\, culture\, family\, and the routine of the everyday. \nShe has worked in the apparel\, computer\, and housewares product industries\, working with Chinese manufacturers\, factories\, and laborers and has taught various high school\, undergraduate\, and graduate-level classes in sculpture\, ceramics\, 2D design\, computer programming\, and non-ferrous metals. Hsieh has a B.A. from Hamilton College\, a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising\, and an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
