Thank you to Interprenet for their generous donation of interpretation services. \nSpeakers:\nCarlos Hevia\, Director of Business Development\, Multilingual Connections\nCarlos Hevia graduated from Auburn University with a degree in International Business (Marketing) and has over 20 years of experience in international sales & marketing and strategic planning. He has experience in many markets including medical devices\, information technologies\, chemical products\, and language services and has worked with both government agencies and private industry. Through his work and life\, Carlos has experienced first hand the power of language to connect people and ideas. Through his daily work\, he is able to help people across the globe to access the services\, information\, and other resources they need to improve their lives. \nChristena Gunther\, (She/her/hers) Founder and President\,  Chicago Cultural Accessibility Consortium\nBringing Chicago together around the intersection of disability and the arts was Christena’s main aim when she started the Chicago Chicago Accessibility Consortium (CCAC) in 2013. Having over a decade of experience in cultural accessibility from a variety of cultural organizations\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Lincoln Center\, she currently serves as Assistant Director of Disability Services at Adler University. Thanks to her brother who has Down syndrome\, cultural accessibility became her passion as they visited museums and plays together. DESCRIPTION:The theme for the Chicago Cultural Alliance’s Activating Heritage Conference this year is “the Stories We Tell\,” chosen not only because of the literal stories our Members tell in their work\, but also based on the “stories” and multiple ways we as cultural workers must present ourselves to carry on our duties as we work to benefit and participate in the cultural of the communities we live in. Join our panel of creatives as they discuss how their work aligns with the theme of our conference\, using and creating stories for our communities. Emmy-winning reporter Adriana Cardona-Maguigad will share her perspectives from the world of journalism\, while Sara Chapman of Media Burn will bring the insights of an archivist. Educator\, artist and storyteller Dr. Ada Cheng will facilitate the conversation and share her own perspectives and insights from her years of collaborating and creating cultural storytelling projects. \nSpeakers:\nAdriana Cardona-Maguigad\, Reporter for Curious City on WBEZ.\nAdriana is a former 2012 WBEZ Pritzker fellow and was part of the inaugural class of Northwestern University’s Social Justice News Nexus fellowship program. She worked on a 2015 award-winning audio project for WBEZ and NPR’s This American Life about unregulated drug rehab centers in Chicago drawing people from Puerto Rico. Her investigation was recognized with a Sigma Delta Chi Award with the Society of Professional Journalists\, a 2016 National Edward R. Murrow Award and three Peter Lisagor Awards.\nPrior to joining WBEZ’s education team\, Adriana worked at Univision Chicago where she was honored with two Chicago/ Midwest Emmy Awards.\nAdriana lived in Dubuque and Des Moines\, Iowa for many years. She is originally from Medellin\, Colombia and has been a Chicago resident since 2005. \nSara Chapman\, Executive Director\, Media Burn Archive\nSara Chapman (she/her) has been executive director of Media Burn since 2009\, and has been an integral part of the organization since its founding in 2003. You can catch her online at Media Burn’s biweekly Virtual Talks with Video Activists series on Thursdays. A scholar of early video and television\, her article “Guerrilla Television in the Digital Archive” was published in the Journal of Film and Video. In 2019\, she was the producer of the feature-length experimental film\, Ghosts in the Machine\, which toured internationally. She’s also an avid swimmer and former co-chair of her Masters swim team\, the Chicago Smelts. \nAda Cheng\, Visiting Associate Professor\, Asian American Studies Program\, Northwestern University\nAn educator-turned artist\, storyteller\, and creator\, Dr. Ada Cheng has utilized storytelling to illustrate structural inequities\, raise critical awareness\, and build intimate communities. Committed to amplifying and uplifting marginalized voices\, she has created numerous storytelling platforms for BIPOC and LGBTQIA community members to tell difficult and vulnerable stories based on their lived experiences. Since she resigned from her tenured position in sociology at DePaul University in 2016\, she has been featured at storytelling shows and done her two solo performances in theaters\, universities\, and conferences across the nation. Dr. Cheng has been speaker for Illinois Humanities Speakers Bureau since 2019. She is currently a visiting Associate Professor with Asian American Studies at Northwestern University as well as an adjunct faculty at Dominican University. Her interests encompass academia\, storytelling/performance\, and advocacy. \n  \nEvent will take place in-person at the DANK Haus German American Cultural Center\, 4740 N Western Ave\, in the Brauhaus Room (2nd floor). DESCRIPTION:This spring\, the Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) will launch the Spotlight Series\, a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago. \nJoin us on Saturday\, March 19th from 3-6pm CT for the inaugural opening reception of Laura Lynn Hsieh: Mahjong and Dumplings featuring ceramics and video by the artist Laura Lynn Hsieh. This exhibitition will run from March 19 through April 29. \nPlease RSVP here \nAbout the artist\nLaura Lynn Hsieh is a first-generation Chinese American who doesn’t speak Chinese. \nGrowing up in an all-white\, Massachusetts town has influenced her work as much as having parents who fled their homeland during wartime and who expect her to maintain ties to a culture she has never known. As an installation artist\, Hsieh’s creative processes involve writing\, text usage\, sculptural and ceramic components\, as well as video and performance. Her work investigates notions of community\, culture\, family\, and the routine of the everyday. \nShe has worked in the apparel\, computer\, and housewares product industries\, working with Chinese manufacturers\, factories\, and laborers and has taught various high school\, undergraduate\, and graduate-level classes in sculpture\, ceramics\, 2D design\, computer programming\, and non-ferrous metals. Hsieh has a B.A. from Hamilton College\, a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising\, and an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

All attendees are welcome to join in on this conversation\, so come ready to talk\, reflect\, and ask questions!\n\n3831/VOICES is a new program series of conversations and lectures featuring Black artists\, scholars\, curators\, historians\, and arts workers that invite our community into their creative practices\, research\, and conceptual processes\, and more! 3831 takes after SSCAC’s exact numerical address in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood. Although we recognize ourselves as an iconic historical site for Black artistic and cultural advancement\, we continue to evolve as a contemporary hub for new thought practices\, creative practices\, and innovative frameworks being developed by a diverse array of amazing folks here in our city\, and beyond.\n\nSkyla Hearn (Skylah Sensahrae) is a proud Chicagoan (South Side) by way of Mississippi. As an archivist\, liberatory memory and cultural worker Skyla is most concerned with supporting a community’s attempt to understand\, document and share its own history\, particularly those aspects that have not been well recorded. Skyla’s passion and dedication towards the creation\, management\, preservation and accessibility of archives\, with particular focus on BIPOC LGBTQIA+ collections\, ephemeral materials\, knowledge development\, and social justice has provided her with unique opportunities to work with diverse individuals\, communities and repositories at various capacities nationally and internationally.\n\nSkyla is also co-founder of The Blackivists\, a collective of trained Black memory workers who provide expertise on archiving and preservation practices to communities in the Chicago land area; and the inaugural Manager of Archives for Cook County Government under the Offices of the President of the Board of Commissioners.\nAs a legacy keeper\, she recently (March 2021) co-edited the zine publication Our Girl Tuesday: An Unfurling for Dr. Margaret T.G. Burroughs alongside Sarah Ross and Tempestt Hazel with an introduction by Mariame Kaba\, published by Sojourners for Justice Press.

SUMMARY:Cosmo's Cosmos: 100 Years of Birth\, Death\, and Rebirth
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of the life and work of artist Cosmo Campoli (1922-1997)\, through images\, films\, lectures\, and storytelling.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThe event will be emceed by Paul Durica\, Director of Exhibitions at the Newberry Library. He has a PhD in English from the University of Chicago\, where he developed a series of free and interactive walks\, talks\, and reenactments dealing with Chicago’s past. These public history experiences have received local and national media attention and led to collaborations with cultural institutions from across the city. Find out more at https://pocketguidetohell.com/ \nPresentations will include: \n\nA riff on the Jean Debuffet’s seminal 1951 lecture “Anticultural Positions” by Northwestern University Professor Rebecca Zorach;\nPersonal and artistic remembrances from renowned sculptor Virginio Ferarri\, whose sculptures Dialogo (1971)\, Interlocking (1993)\, and Caring (2015) are visible on the University of Chicago campus;\nA screening of Cosmo’s Cosmos\, a 1981 documentary short by Annette Barbier and Terry Moyement;\nNewly unearthed 1991 footage of Campoli performing his unique take on beat poetry\, shot by filmmaker Joe Winston\, director of the soon-to-be-released documentary Punch 9 for Harold Washington;\nA screening of a cooking demonstration of the recipe for Cosmo’s Special Spaghetti\, a truly unique dish that reflected Campoli’s whimsical attitude. Won Kim\, chef at Bridgeport’s Kimski restaurant\, who is also a graffiti artist and DJ\, recreated Cosmo’s famous dish that he used to serve at the Blue Gargoyle.\n\nAdvance RSVP’s are encouraged. Masks and proof of vaccination are required. \n\n\nThis event is part of a day-long series of events\, Cosmo’s Cosmos: 100 Years of Birth\, Death\, and Rebirth. \nMarch 21\, 2022 will be the centenary of the birth of sculptor and Hyde Park resident Cosmo Campoli. Campoli (1922-1997) was part of the “Monster Roster” group associated with the Chicago Imagists in the 1950s\, including Leon Golub and H.C. Westermann. His work\, which frequently centered on themes of birth and death\, was exhibited as part of the Chicago Imagists at the Hyde Park Art Center. His sculpture\, “Bird of Peace\,” known colloquially as “The Egg\,” is a well-known piece of public art in Nichols Park.

Nandita is a graduate of the Bard College-International Center of Photography’s MFA program and teaches photography at SUNY Purchase. \n𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐰𝐚 lives and works in Portland\, Oregon. Originally from New Delhi\, India\, she received an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in the same from the Maharaja Sayajirao University\, Baroda\, India. \n𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐡 is a visual artist and choreographer based in NYC. He is the recipient of the Skowhegan\, Yaddo\, Residency Unlimited\, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts residencies. Along with the competitive New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. \n𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐆𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚 𝐖𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬\, the panel moderator\, is an American of Bengali and Maharashtrian heritage\, she currently lives in and works from Portland\, OR. Namita centers her work on principles of inclusion and anti-racism in her writing\, teaching\, curatorial work and art making. \nThis is part of our series of programs for E/Merge: Art of the Indian Diaspora. \nDue to limited availability please register early!

This event will take place on Zoom.
