SUMMARY:The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness
DESCRIPTION:South Asia Institute is pleased to announce its new exhibition\, “The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\,” in collaboration with the Paglees. \nThe Paglees is a feminist collective of artists of South Asian origin living across the United States. Paglee or pagli means crazy woman in a number of South Asian languages. The Paglees are: Fawzia Khan\, Indrani Nayar-Gall\, Monica Jahan Bose\, Nirmal Raja\, Pallavi Sharma\, Renluka Maharaj\, and Shelly Bahl. \nIn their debut exhibition\, The Paglees investigate – with fierceness\, beauty\, and wit – the impact on women of generations of patriarchy\, religion\, white supremacy\, colonialism\, violence\, capitalism\, and environmental plunder. \nThe title of the exhibition derives from Rosa Parks’ words: “There is just so much hurt\, disappointment and oppression one can take. The bubble of life grows larger. The line between reason and madness grows thinner.” (Rosa Parks: Writings\, Notes and Statements\,1956-58). \nFeaturing mixed-media works on paper\, fabric\, and canvas\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, installation\, and moving image\, The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\, questions and reframes the labeling of non-conforming women as crazy and the marginalization of immigrant women of color. This collective exhibition presents new decolonial narratives that center the reason and wisdom of brown women of the Global South and diaspora\, and provide pathways to a creative feminist future. The Paglees believe in working in collaboration with other marginalized communities to build bridges and demand social\, environmental\, and legal justice for all. \nTHE PAGLEES\nFawzia Khan | Indrani Nayar-Gall | Monica Jahan Bose | Nirmal Raja | Pallavi Sharma | Renluka Maharaj | Shelly Bahl

SUMMARY:Immense Journeys
DESCRIPTION:Immense Journeys: Art\, Nature\, Science and Beyond\nFeaturing Melissa Jay Craig\, Lisa A. Frank\, Anne Hughes \nOn display until March 3rd\, 2024 \nMelissa Jay Craig\, Lisa A. Frank\, and Anne Hughes lead lives rich in creative experiences informed by nature. Day by day\, art practice and the natural world awaken shoots of imaginative reflections and actions. This exhibition brings together varied\, visual art forms to stand on their own and resonate off the others through surprising interconnections (just like nature itself). A purposeful confluence provides many pathways into appreciation of process and range. It allows for thoughtful exploration of the infinite ways in which nature affects our lives and we affect nature. Presented here are works by three artists who\, over decades\, have embraced the wonders of nature and witnessed results of human actions and inactions. Deepfelt desires\, to share their personal artworks and stir the passions of others to engage\, reside at the heart of this exhibition. There is no one-way in. Creativity and nature inspire\, confound\, amaze\, and amuse.

SUMMARY:Notes from the Field
DESCRIPTION:Witness the powerful stories of 19 individuals fighting to overcome and transform America’s education and criminal justice systems.\nTHIS STRIKINGLY INTIMATE PIECE presents snapshots from a variety of real people\, documenting their intersections with the American dream and the obstacles that work to block them from it. Utilizing verbatim dialogue pulled from more than 250 accounts from students\, faculty\, prisoners\, activists\, politicians\, and victims’ families\, Notes from the Field takes audiences on an emotional journey through the faults and injustices of an American criminal justice system that seems more focused on incarceration over education. Deeply human\, profoundly moving\, and full of moments of humor\, compassion\, and resilience\, it’s a masterful work that asks you to observe\, be present\, and join the call for urgent and necessary change. \nOriginally performed by creator Anna Deavere Smith as a one-woman show\, in TimeLine’s Chicago premiere\, three actors weave together narratives of change makers\, activists\, and those caught within the system for an evening of theatre unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

SUMMARY:What You See Is What You Get By Johan Wahlstrom
DESCRIPTION:Wahlstrom is a 5th generation Swedish artist from Stockholm. He began his artistic career in music and transitioned to painting in 1998. He often pulls inspiration from his previous career as a musician and from his experiences traveling the world. Wahlstrom continuously looks to critique and re-frame society through his comedic\, abstract style. In “What You See Is What You Get” Wahlstrom reconnects with the artists who originally inspired him such as Wassily Kandinsky\, Franz Marc\, Karel Appel\, and Asger Jorn. Pieces in this series comment on political and social concerns such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and current Swedish politics.

SUMMARY:"Unearth" at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:“Unearth” is on display now through March 10 at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art\, featuring three Chicago-based painters who find beauty and meaning in everyday urban scenes\, drawing back to the tradition of early 20th century painters. \n\nKaren Perl\, Emily Rapport and Gwendolyn Zabicki similarly capture the buildings\, streets\, neighborhoods and casual interactions that make up the backdrop of everyday\, urban life and reflect on how we live\, while echoing the Chicago community’s history. SUMMARY:Arte de La Borinqueña - Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. The story emerged during a critical period for the Puerto Rican people\, marked by an economic crisis and natural disasters in the Caribbean. La Borinqueña has transcended fiction\, evolving into a philanthropic superhero movement with a collection of graphic novels\, a special benefit anthology with DC Comics titled Ricanstruction\, and noteworthy partnerships with NRDC\, Chocolate Cortés\, and others.

SUMMARY:Community Insights: Awareness and Well-Being in the South Asian Community
DESCRIPTION:In South Asian communities\, mental health issues are often swept under the rug. Because it is culturally stigmatizing to talk about one’s feelings\, some people are denied or have no access to mental health resources. \nNumerous studies have shown that South Asian immigrants experience high rates of mental health problems\, sometimes higher than their peers and the lack of access has serious consequences. \nIn an effort to break the taboo and start a healthy conversation about mental health among South Asian communities\, South Asia Institute has organized “Community Insights: Awareness and Well-Being in the South Asian Community” on Saturday\, March 2\, 2024. \nJoin us for this insightful event led by Rohit Agrawal\, PsyD of Center Focused Therapy\, where we will highlight the intersections of culture and well-being\, and also address the stigma of mental health in South Asian families. \nCommunity-based and personal resources will be provided to participants so that more members of the South Asian community can benefit. \nEvent Details: \nFREE WITH RSVP \nWHEN: Saturday\, March 2\, 2024 | 3:00 pm start / 2:30 pm doors \nWHERE: 1925 South Michigan Ave\, Chicago\, Il\, 60616

SUMMARY:Flamenco Festival: LAS MIGAS
DESCRIPTION:Las Migas first exploded on the flamenco scene 20 years ago in Barcelona as a singularly unique\, all-female and multinational quartet in an extremely male-dominated and insular genre. They have challenged stereotypes and flamenco traditions with astounding success over their long career and have evolved into a powerhouse of Flamenco fusion that has earned them many\nawards including a Latin Grammy nomination followed by a Latin Grammy award in 2022 for Libres. The current line-up\, all hailing from different regions of Spain\, include vocalist Carolina “La Chispa\,” guitarists Marta Robles and Alicia\nGrillo\, violinist Laura Pacios and special guest bassist Oriol Riart Laborda. After numerous tours in the U.S.\, Europe\, and Latin America\, audiences are finally offered an opportunity to see these Flamenco trailblazers in their Chicago debut!
