SUMMARY:Movie Screening ONLINE: Älven min Vän
DESCRIPTION:Älven min Vän is a portrait of the lives of four Sami women and their relationship to the Lule River in Sweden. The film shows the consequences of the forced resettlement of Sami people who were displaced from their land because of the construction of river dams and were alienated from their indigenous culture and way of life (such as reindeer husbandry\, clothing\, language\, food and music). At the same time\, the film shows the deep relationship between the women and the river. \nRegister for this free event and receive a link to the movie. You then join the Zoom event to meet the director Hannah Ambühl. To register please email museum@samac.org

SUMMARY:Dr Knight Lecture Series: Haitian Immigration to America
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Knight in his lecture series for a conversation on Haitian Immigration to America.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack immigrants are often treated differently than those from other nations. Although this does not mean they are treated better\, but black immigrants face far more violence and racism – from local police\, ICE\, and the criminal justice system – than others. This lecture looks at Haitian immigrants in particular and the racial barrier they must navigate entering the United States.

SUMMARY:Balzekas Museum Film Screening: "Second Hand"
DESCRIPTION:See “Second Hand” (2019) an award-winning documentary on migrants caught up in UK’s used clothing trade by filmmaker Artūras Jevdokimovas \n“Second Hand”\, is a tragicomic tale of the long\, meandering journey of donated second hand clothing: from the doorsteps of English manor houses to smalltown Lithuanian markets and charity shops.\n“Second Hand” (2019) exposes the gritty underside of Europe’s used-clothing trade and the lives of the people caught up in its intricate and far-reaching web. The film exposes how clothes donated to charity in the UK become windfall for profiteers\, who capture and move the goods to second-hand markets in Lithuania and other European countries.\nPart documentary comedy\, part detective story\, “Second Hand” tells the story of four Lithuanian migrants–who come to the UK in search of opportunity but who fall prey to human traffikers and organized criminals. These ringleaders appear to care less for the people they exploit than for the used and discarded clothing they peddle. Despite the clash of cultures and tragicomic incidents\, the four characters manage to maintain hope\, humor\, and dignity in a cruel and inhumane environment thanks to their own grit and to filmmaker/director Artūras Jevdokimovas’s sensitive portrayal . \nMEET FILMMAKER ARTŪRAS JEVDOKIMOVAS\nArtūras Jevdokimovas\, an award-winning Lithuanian filmmaker\, will be on hand for the screening and Q& A afterwards.
