DESCRIPTION:A three-person exhibition featuring new and recent works from Chicago-based artists Ajmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar\, Lola Ayisha Ogbara\, and R. Treshawn Williamson exploring homeplace through sculpture\, self-imaging\, & materialism.  \n\n\n…of the land: acts of refusal and ratification features new and recent works from Chicago-based artists Ajmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar\, Lola Ayisha Ogbara\, and R. Treshawn Williamson exploring sculpture\, self-imaging and history through postcolonial lenses\, collective & individual recollection and peculiar materialism. Their use of storytelling holds significance for spatiality and locality to become common ground through the fielding of land\, labor and industry. \nAjmal ‘Mas Man’ Millar expands the sculptural form welding metal\, Trinidadian carnival culture and identity politics alongside the African diaspora. Lola Ayisha Ogbara merges West African and African American interior design aesthetics with bodily sculptural ceramic forms\, with performative photography – that rest and refuse a Western gaze. \nR. Treshawn Williamson creates historical context for his own familial roots in the mining of charcoal material for large scale screen-printed tapestries in a careful consideration of laborious processes as praxis. Millar\, Ogbara and Williamson engage in practices that consider topographic timelines and performance as an essential tool making for an interesting dialogue about homeplace. \n_______________ \n\n\nAjmal ‘MAS MAN’ Millar is a self-taught contemporary visual artist and mas man (carnival costume designer). His work includes mixed–media sculpture that combine collage\, painting\, repurposed materials\, scrap metal\, performance\, and photography interrogating notions of cultural heritage\, sexual and gender identity\, and ritual practices as a first-generation African American black queer man born to Trinidadian immigrants. Ajmal earned an undergraduate degree from Morehouse College in 2008 and earned an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021. \n“I am working on a collection of works engaging the Yoruba cosmological concept of Chi and its existence in everything\, alive or inorganic. I create amalgamations of found objects and scraps of steel combined with encaustic. Inspired from my carnival technique of ‘wire bending’\, Afrofuturism\, and Afro Surrealism\, I have an opportunity to express my emotions and thoughts as experienced in the various environments I collect from and exist in. My welding is drawing in space to depict the transcendent properties in masquerade. My goal is to contextualize a queer blackness rarely experienced through imagination\, invention\, and the investigation of dreams\, magic\, and ritual.” \nHe currently lives and works in Chicago\, IL. \n\n\n\n\nLola Ayisha Ogbara (cultural worker & artist) born and raised in Chicago\, Illinois holds many talents under her belt\, i.e. sculpture\, sound\, design\, photography and installation art. \n“My practice explores the multifaceted implications and ramifications of being in regards to the Black experience. I work with clay as a material in order to emphasize a necessary fragility which symbolizes an essential contradiction implicit in empowerments.” \nOgbara holds a Bachelor of Arts in Arts Entertainment & Media Management from Columbia College Chicago in 2013 and a MFA in Visual Arts from Washington University Sam Fox School of Art & Design. \nIn 2017\, Ogbara co-founded Artists in the Room\, a collective of artists and scholars who host artists\, emerging and established\, in hopes of serving as a catalyst for artist development and networking. Ogbara has also received numerous fellowships and awards\, including the Multicultural Fellowship sponsored by the NCECA 52nd Annual Conference\, the Arts + Public Life and Center for the Study of Race\, Politics & Culture Residency at the University of Chicago\, and the Coney Family Fund Award hosted by the Chicago Artists Coalition. Ogbara has exhibited in art spaces across the country and is currently based in Chicago\, IL. \n\n\n\n\nR. Treshawn Williamson is a Chicago based essayist and multidisciplinary artist of Black American descent\, from Prince George’s County\, MD\, by way of Livingston\, Alabama\, and Augusta\, Georgia. \nWilliamson’s work is a meditation on the obstruction and surveillance of the lived histories of African-Americans. He investigates the application of cultural re-imagination in the African Diaspora through the engagement of oral histories\, post-colonial theory\, folklore\, and ethnomusicology. In 2020 Williamson earned his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. \nHe currently lives and works in Chicago\, IL.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories”: Partition Anti-Memorial Project
DESCRIPTION:Through experiential art installations “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories” investigates the Partition of India in 1947. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis year marks 75 years since the Partition of India in 1947\, which created Pakistan\, and eventually\, Bangladesh in 1971. Pritika Chowdhry’s experiential art installations are temporary ‘anti-memorials’ to the Partition. \nOften described as the Holocaust of South Asia\, the Partition triggered the largest migration in human history with over 20 million people displaced\, approximately 2 million killed and over 300\,000 women were abducted in the communal violence that ensued. \nThe exhibition addresses the many facets of the Partition from a counter-memory perspective through experiential art installations. The title alludes to the painful and silenced narratives that have been elided from mainstream discourses of the Partition. \nWhen a memory is unbearable\, how does one memorialize it? And when a history is unspeakable\, how does one talk about it? SUMMARY:A Show of Hands: Handwriting in the Age of Print
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, handwriting served as a powerful tool for communicating information\, preserving knowledge\, shaping identity\, and building empires. In our digital world\, however\, fewer and fewer people can read handwritten words. \nHandwriting has survived disruptive technologies before. The invention of printing did not diminish the need for handwriting. Instead\, it created new markets for ambitious printers and entrepreneurial writing teachers. These men and women used advances in print technologies to widen the influence of handwriting in everyday life. \nA Show of Hands focuses on people\, cultures\, and technology to illustrate how handwriting has been taught\, reproduced\, and reimagined over the past five hundred years. Displaying a range of books and manuscripts from the Newberry’s collection\, the exhibition makes the role of handwriting in the age of print newly legible. \nA Show of Hands is generously supported by the Richard C. von Hess Foundation\, the Fitzgerald Family Foundation\, and Diane and Richard Weinberg.

DESCRIPTION:In this new exhibition\, the Chicago-based Greek American photographer presents 80 historic works showcasing Chicago’s Greek American celebrations alongside other ethnic and cultural festivals and parades\, primarily from the 1970s and 1980s. Depicted events include the Greek Independence Day Parade\, Bud Billiken Day Parade\, Chinese New Year Parade\, Mexican Civic Society Parade\, Jewish Festival and many more. \nThe National Hellenic Museum’s mission is to share Greek history\, art and culture\, and the Greek American experience. Diane’s works vividly capture how Chicago’s Greek American community gathers in the public space to show pride in its identity and share its culture. Through her images of other ethnic and cultural celebrations\, Diane also explores the universality of how Chicagoans gather together to show pride in their diverse communities. \nGather Together: Chicago Street Photography by Diane Alexander White will be exhibited at the National Hellenic Museum through April 30\, 2023. SUMMARY:ARTIVISM 101: A workshop on creating art to change the world
DESCRIPTION:Bestselling illustrator Nikkolas Smith hosts a Kids & Family Workshop on creating art that aligns with and highlights activism. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nNikkolas Smith\, Artivist and #1 New York Times Bestselling illustrator\, will show you how to become an Artivist. Do you have something you want to better or change in your community or in the world? How can art inspire you to change the world for the better? How can art help you to be fearless and speak up? With Nikkolas’ guidance\, attendees of this workshop will create their own Artivism piece and be a part of the Artivist movement. This workshop is geared to artists of all ages\, especially kids and families. Nikkolas will sign books and merchandise following the workshop. \nAttendees are encouraged to bring whatever materials they are most comfortable creating art with. The American Writers Museum will provide paper and drawing materials like colored pencils\, but if you prefer to create digital art you must bring your own computers\, tablets\, etc. \nThis special program is presented in conjunction with our forthcoming exhibit and education initiative Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice\, opening September 2022. Dark Testament explores racial injustice in America through the work of Black American writers from the end of the Civil War through the Civil Rights Movement\, and the impact these writers continue to have on contemporary writers\, creators\, and activists.

Organized by the city of Nepomuk\, Czech Republic in cooperation with Consulates General of the Czech Republic in Chicago and New York\, Consulado Geral do Brasil em Chicago\, East River Catholics\, Czech Mission – Brookfield\, Archdiocese of St. Louis and Nichols Concert Hall.\n—-\nBiography:\n\nThe baritone singer and pianist Martin Vydra\nAlready at the age of nine years he was in touch with singing due to Jiřina Marková – Kristlíková and the „Childern’s Opera“ at Prague. During his studies at the Conservatory (Academy of Music) at Prague he was taking part in Prague’s Philharmonic choir and realized in our country and even overseas a few projects within the group „Martinů Voices“ under the leadership of Lukáš Vasílek. In the years 2015-2017 he studied singing at the Musical Faculty JAMU in Brno. He participated in the National Theatre at Prague on programs „Opera nás baví“ (We enjoy the Opera) and also participated on programs of the Prague’s Madrigalists and with the German Baroque ensemble „Hoffkapele Schloss Seehaus“\, also with the baroque group Victoria. He also participated in the Prague’s Opera studio with Jiřina Marková – Krystlíková. He participated in the masterclass of the Norwegian Musical Academy in Oslo and co-operates with the German tenorist and cembalist Johannes Weiss. In recent years he had several performances in Japan and Brazil. In 2022 he will introduce himself for the first time to the audiences in the USA. He is working his way up. Do a musical career concentrating on areas of romanticism and classicism and also that of the Baroque. He plays piano since childhood and accompanies on concerts his friends and himself. He is one of the great Czech talents and presents an artistic face of the town of Nepomuk for the celebrations of St. John of Nepomuk’s beatification (2021) and his sanctification (2029).\n\nThe Musician Ricardo Itaborahy\nHe is these days one of the prominent artists of the new generation of Brazilian pianists and plays with great names in Brazilian popular music like Milton Nascimento\, Wagner Tido\, Toninho Horta\, João Bosco or he American guitarist Stanley Jordan. He is part of the jazz trio of Dudu Lima from Minas Gerais Region with whom he took in 2018 a trip through Europe. Czech Republic\, Italy and Belgium. He also cooperates with the famous Brazilian musician Emmerson Nogueira. As a Christian he has strong relationship with the sacred Catholic music\, he is musically active in liturgical celebrations of his archdiocese and participated on the musical production and presentation with great Brazilian Catholic artists responsible for the musical „Show for Life“ produced at the occasion od Pope Francis’s visit to Brazil in 2013. Ricardo is a self-taught artist. He learnt to play piano with his grandfather mister Neném Itaborahy. He pursued his studies of music in Centro Ian Guest de Aprofundamento Musical in Rio de Janeiro and the music school Centro Cultural Pró-Música UFJF in the town Juiz de Fora.

DESCRIPTION:Nostalgia for My Island: Puerto Rican Paintings from the Museo de Arte de Ponce. \nThe National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture is excited to partner with the world-renowned fine arts museum\, The Museo de Arte de Ponce (El Museo)\, to present a unique exhibit of Puerto Rican paintings on the U.S. mainland. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition\, entitled “Nostalgia for My Island: Painting from the Museo de Arte de Ponce 1786-1809.” The curated collection of twenty paintings includes original works by prominent Puerto Rican artists Jose Campeche (1751-1809) and Francisco Oller (1833-1917). The paintings in this exhibit have never before traveled outside Puerto Rico. \nJose Campeche\, the son of a slave\, is described by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art as “the most significant Puerto Rican painter of portraits and religious imagery.” Francisco Oller has been called “a Realist-Impressionist” and is considered the only Latin American painter to play a role in the development of Impressionism. In the early 1980s\, El Museo located and restored many of his works\, which had deteriorated in the tropical climate. The exhibit will coincide with the five-year commemoration of Hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico and The Museo de Arte de Ponce on September 20\, 2017. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

One of the cofounders of photojournalism’s famous cooperative Magnum Photos\, Chim’s work was poignant and emphatic – transcending generations\, making him one of the 20th century’s quintessential photographers. \nJoin us for a special presentation by Carole Naggar and Ben Shneiderman to celebrate the opening of our latest exhibition\, Chim: Between Devastation and Resurrection\, which focuses on Seymour’s photographs of post-World War II reconstruction in Europe\, European elections\, the effect of the war on children\, and the birth of the new State of Israel. \nNaggar is an author and photography historian who has studied Chim’s life and work for decades. Her long-awaited biography\, David ‘Chim’ Seymour: Searching for the Light\, 1911-1956\, will be released this fall. DESCRIPTION:The feature documentary 80 YEARS LATER explores the racial inheritance of Japanese American family incarceration during World War II through multigenerational conversations with survivors and their descendants.\nIn the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 that imprisoned 120\,000 Japanese Americans in World War II\, families still grapple with the legacy of their experience. How does one inherit traumatic history across generations?\nOur community screening in Chicago is especially meaningful as many incarcerated Japanese Americans relocated and rebuilt their lives in Chicago following their incarceration. The screening will be 50 min long and will be followed by a Q&A with cast and crew from the film.\nThe Q&A will be moderated by Karen Su\, Global Asian Studies Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago. Professor Su started teaching Introduction to Asian American Studies in 2006\, before the Asian American Studies program was formally established. She serves as the Principal Investigator and Project Director of the UIC AANAPISI Initiative.\nIn her creative work\, Prof. Su focuses on children’s picture books featuring Asian American life stories. She was chosen to participate in a mentorship program with Maya Gonzalez at Reflection Press in 2017 and was a We Need Diverse Books mentee in 2018. One of her current works-in-progress focuses on the story of Yuki Llewellyn who was incarcerated as a child at Manzanar during WWII.\nThe filmmaker Celine Parreñas Shimizu considers it incredibly important that this community impact screening amplifies existing work that supports formerly incarcerated Japanese Americans and their descendants. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC). JASC engages people of all ages to experience Japanese American history and culture and to improve their well-being through innovative\, high quality programs and services tailored to the multicultural community.\nThis is a masked event. Unable to perform inside Afghanistan today\, the group carries the flame of Afghanistan’s rich and complex musical heritage\, from its early history to the modern era. Included in the program will be traditional ghazals based on the Sufi-inspired poetry of Rumi (who was born in Afghanistan)\, Afghan folk music\, and the iconic hits of legendary singer Ahmad Zahir. \nQais Essar\nQais Essar is an Afghan-American musician\, based in Phoenix\, Arizona. A rabab player and songwriter\, he is most noted for the song “The Crown Sleeps” from the film The Breadwinner\, which won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Song at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards in 2018.
