SUMMARY:Exhibition: “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories”: Partition Anti-Memorial Project
DESCRIPTION:Through experiential art installations “Unbearable Memories\, Unspeakable Histories” investigates the Partition of India in 1947. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis year marks 75 years since the Partition of India in 1947\, which created Pakistan\, and eventually\, Bangladesh in 1971. Pritika Chowdhry’s experiential art installations are temporary ‘anti-memorials’ to the Partition. \nOften described as the Holocaust of South Asia\, the Partition triggered the largest migration in human history with over 20 million people displaced\, approximately 2 million killed and over 300\,000 women were abducted in the communal violence that ensued. \nThe exhibition addresses the many facets of the Partition from a counter-memory perspective through experiential art installations. The title alludes to the painful and silenced narratives that have been elided from mainstream discourses of the Partition. \nWhen a memory is unbearable\, how does one memorialize it? And when a history is unspeakable\, how does one talk about it? SUMMARY:A Show of Hands: Handwriting in the Age of Print
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, handwriting served as a powerful tool for communicating information\, preserving knowledge\, shaping identity\, and building empires. In our digital world\, however\, fewer and fewer people can read handwritten words. \nHandwriting has survived disruptive technologies before. The invention of printing did not diminish the need for handwriting. Instead\, it created new markets for ambitious printers and entrepreneurial writing teachers. These men and women used advances in print technologies to widen the influence of handwriting in everyday life. \nA Show of Hands focuses on people\, cultures\, and technology to illustrate how handwriting has been taught\, reproduced\, and reimagined over the past five hundred years. Displaying a range of books and manuscripts from the Newberry’s collection\, the exhibition makes the role of handwriting in the age of print newly legible. \nA Show of Hands is generously supported by the Richard C. von Hess Foundation\, the Fitzgerald Family Foundation\, and Diane and Richard Weinberg.

Depicted events include the Greek Independence Day Parade\, Bud Billiken Day Parade\, Chinese New Year Parade\, Mexican Civic Society Parade\, Jewish Festival and many more. \nThe National Hellenic Museum’s mission is to share Greek history\, art and culture\, and the Greek American experience. Diane’s works vividly capture how Chicago’s Greek American community gathers in the public space to show pride in its identity and share its culture. DESCRIPTION:Nine Black women artists engaged in collaborative efforts to create artworks that transcend and transform events in the year 2020. In their eyes\, art-making became a transgressive act through activism\, documentation and vision. Utilizing book-making\, craft-making and works on paper\, 9 Artists/9 Months/ 9 Perspectives presents a birth of vision under hardship felt worldwide\, collectively allowing us to reckon with our own perspectives\, reflections and welfare.\n  \nThis exhibition presents the conception\, gestation\, and birth of a collaborative artists’ books created by nine Black women artists of the collective\, Dandelion Black Women Artists. Their responses\, perspectives\, and reflections were inspired by the continuous struggle for health\, social\, and economic welfare of marginalized people during COVID-19\, the lack of response from the federal government\, and the political allyship of socio-political grassroots movements like Black Lives Matter. Craft-making became a transgressive act through artivism\, perspective\, and vision.

DESCRIPTION:Join Intuit for Art After Work\, a free series of facilitated art-making workshops inspired by outsider and self-taught art and artists from the museum’s collections and exhibitions. This month\, Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist and educator Marvin Tate will facilitate a workshop inspired by one of his pastimes: birdwatching. In the in-person workshop titled “Come Fly With Me\,” participants will make an artful bird from found objects. \n\n\n\n\nMaterials at Intuit \n\nWire clothing hangers\nPlastic forks\nString in various colors\nPainters tape in various colors\nCotton balls\nBeads\nHot glue\n\nArt After Work is for everyone\, including beginners and people who say they “are not artists.” We can all be artists! DESCRIPTION:The Balzekas Museum presents an in-person 3-Thursday Lithuanian Straw Ornament Making Master Class with artist/educator Laura Lapinskas \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nIn order to preserve and perpetuate Lithuanian traditions\, the Balzekas Museum is launching a series of traditional Lithuanian Folk Arts Master Classes. The first Master Class – on making traditional Lithuanian straw Christmas ornaments– will be conducted by artist/educator Laura Lapinskas\, who in 3 successive Thursday evening classes\, will introduce students to the fundamental steps and techniques of making threaded Lithuanian straw Christmas ornaments. \nParticipants will also have an opportunity to view examples of paper\, plastic\, and natural straw ornaments from the Museum’s exhibits and collections\, and to learn about the origin and significance of ornaments and sodai\, their pagan predecessors. The history of decorating Lithuanian Christmas trees in the United States will also be highlighted. \nClasses will run for 3 consecutive weeks\, starting Thursday\, Nov. 3\, 2022\, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and ending on Nov. 17\, 2022. All classes will take place in person at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture\, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd.\, Chicago IL 60629. These class demonstrations by the instructor will be filmed and subsequently available for Museum members to view on the Museum’s Vimeo channel. Ornament Kit may also be purchased through the Museum’s gift shop. \nFor purposes of instruction\, paper straws will be used; however\, natural straw will also be available for those who want to try the medium. All materials will be supplied to registrants\, including straws\, detailed instructions\, thread and needles for threading ornaments and for making the decorative dangling “fringe” pendants. \nRegistration includes supplies: (straws\, thread\, needles\, instruction sheets) and light refreshments. \nEnrollment is limited to so please register early. DESCRIPTION:He was born in Żywiec\, Poland. He studied at the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (the Katowice branch). He received a diploma with honours in 2001 from the Studio of Industrial Design supervised by Professor Jerzy Wuttke. In 2010\, he was conferred the degree of doctor of fine arts\, and in 2018 – the degree of habilitated doctor. In 2004\, he began working in the Department of Design as an assistant at the Drawing and Painting Studio supervised by Professor Jan Dubiel. Since 2015\, he has held the position of head of the Visual Arts Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. He also teaches drawing and painting at the University of Technology in Katowice and the Drawing and Graphics Studio at the Municipal Cultural Centre in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. He is the co-author of numerous polychrome works in churches. He has taken part in about 100 collective exhibitions in Poland and abroad and has had 24 individual exhibitions. He has also participated in several plein-air and post-plein-air exhibitions and numerous competitions and post-competition exhibitions

DESCRIPTION:Symposium 2: “The Ethics of Exhibiting Artists with Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Disabilities” \nArtists First Conversations: Inclusivity for Artists with Disabilities is a three-part symposium series held in tandem with the Chicago Cultural Center exhibition Artists First: Twenty-five Years of Studio Art at Thresholds. The primary goals of the symposium series are to increase scholarship in the field of self-taught art made by artists with neurodevelopmental and mental health disabilities\, with a focus on community receptivity historically and currently\, and to strengthen partnerships nationally and internationally in continuing the exchange of art and ideas. \nThe symposium’s panels will delve into 1) the relationship between art making and mental health\, 2) the ethics of exhibiting artists with neurodevelopmental and mental health disabilities\, and 3) how artists with disabilities fit into the greater art world. \n“The Ethics of Exhibiting Artists with Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Disabilities” will be hybrid with an in-person panel at the Claudia Cassidy Theater at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington Street\, Chicago\, IL 60602); the symposium will conclude with a Q&A with the panelists. Light refreshments will be available before (10–10:30 a.m.) and after (12–12:30 p.m.) the panel. SUMMARY:The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian 45th Anniversary Benefit & Awards Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian will honor U.S. Representative Sharice Davids for her significant contributions to Native American society\, culture\, and history at the 45th Anniversary Benefit and Awards Ceremony on November 19\, 2022\, at Writers Theater in Glencoe\, Illinois. \nOur premier event and annual awards ceremony is named for Dr. Carlos Montezuma\, a citizen of the Yavapai-Apache Tribe. He worked as a physician and social justice activist for Native American rights. Dr. Montezuma was the first Native American to earn an undergraduate and a medical degree from Northwestern University. In 1904 he became one of the founders of the Society for American Indians\, which focused on improving the physical\, social\, and economic well-being of Native Americans. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nU.S. Representative Sharice Davids will receive the 2022 Dr. Montezuma Award for her contributions to social activism that have advanced Native American people nationally. Rep. Davids is a Ho-Chunk Nation citizen and a member of the U.S. House\, representing Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District. In 2019\, she was sworn into the 116th Congress\, making her one of the first two Native American women to serve in Congress and the first openly LGBTQ+ representative to be elected in Kansas. She was raised by a single mother who served in the Army for 20 years. After graduating from Leavenworth High School\, she worked through Johnson County Community College and the University of Missouri-Kansas City before earning a law degree from Cornell Law School. \nAs a first-generation college student who worked the entire time she was in college\, Rep. Davids understands the importance of quality public schools and affordable higher education. That foundation allowed her to go on to a successful career focused on economic and community development\, which included time as a White House Fellow under President Barack Obama.
