SUMMARY:Gather Together: Chicago Street Photography by Diane Alexander White
DESCRIPTION:In this new exhibition\, the Chicago-based Greek American photographer presents 80 historic works showcasing Chicago’s Greek American celebrations alongside other ethnic and cultural festivals and parades\, primarily from the 1970s and 1980s. Depicted events include the Greek Independence Day Parade\, Bud Billiken Day Parade\, Chinese New Year Parade\, Mexican Civic Society Parade\, Jewish Festival and many more. \nThe National Hellenic Museum’s mission is to share Greek history\, art and culture\, and the Greek American experience. Diane’s works vividly capture how Chicago’s Greek American community gathers in the public space to show pride in its identity and share its culture. Through her images of other ethnic and cultural celebrations\, Diane also explores the universality of how Chicagoans gather together to show pride in their diverse communities. \nGather Together: Chicago Street Photography by Diane Alexander White will be exhibited at the National Hellenic Museum through April 30\, 2023. DESCRIPTION:In April 1944\, Rudolf Vrba became the first Jew ever known to engineer his own escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world\, and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them at the end of the railway line. \nAgainst all odds\, he and his fellow escapee Fred Wetzler climbed mountains\, crossed rivers\, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen: a forensically detailed report that would eventually reach Franklin Roosevelt\, Winston Churchill\, and the Pope. Advance registration required. \nIn-Person Registration \nLivestream Registration \nJoin us as historian Kaya Şahin\, author of Peerless among Princes: The Life and Times of Sultan Süleyman\, and art historian Elizabeth Rodini discuss the sixteenth-century ruler\, during whose reign the Ottoman Empire became a truly global power. \nSüleyman presided over a multilingual and multireligious empire that promised peace and prosperity to its subjects while he clashed with the Catholic Habsburgs in Europe and the Shiite Safavids in the Middle East. His poetic output\, his appearances during public ceremonies\, his charity\, and his patronage of arts and architecture enhanced his reputation as a universal ruler with a well-rounded character. \nBehind that public façade\, Süleyman led a complicated life. He grew up with an overbearing father whose legacy was an advantage and a burden. Defying established practice\, he married a concubine named Hürrem whose love and affection became his true refuge. Toward the end of his life\, facing both debilitating sickness and the agitations of his sons\, he struggled to remain on the throne. \nPeerless among Princes will be available for purchase in the Newberry Bookshop\, and Dr. Şahin will sign books after the program.

DESCRIPTION:The Mitchell Museum of American Indian will debut a thought-provoking traveling exhibit\, No Rest: The Epidemic of Stolen Indigenous Women\, Girls\, and 2Spirits\, to remember\, honor\, and illuminate the plight of countless Native individuals who go missing or are murdered each year through art and activism. Opening in January 2023\, the exhibition features 35 original works from 12 collaborating Indigenous artists whose work draws attention to the crimes perpetrated against Native women and 2spirit individuals in the United States. \n  \nNo Rest: The Epidemic of Stolen Indigenous Women\, Girls\, and 2Spirits will be on display from January to September 2023. During the exhibition\, the Mitchell Museum will offer educational resources\, discussions\, awareness events\, and film screenings to connect these critical issues to a broader audience and work together to give voice to missing and murdered Indigenous women\, two spirits\, and families impacted by violence. \n  \nAn opening reception will take place on January 12\, 2023\, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tickets are free for Mitchell Museum Members and $12 for non-members.
