DESCRIPTION:In this new exhibition\, the Chicago-based Greek American photographer presents 80 historic works showcasing Chicago’s Greek American celebrations alongside other ethnic and cultural festivals and parades\, primarily from the 1970s and 1980s. Depicted events include the Greek Independence Day Parade\, Bud Billiken Day Parade\, Chinese New Year Parade\, Mexican Civic Society Parade\, Jewish Festival and many more. \nThe National Hellenic Museum’s mission is to share Greek history\, art and culture\, and the Greek American experience. Diane’s works vividly capture how Chicago’s Greek American community gathers in the public space to show pride in its identity and share its culture. Through her images of other ethnic and cultural celebrations\, Diane also explores the universality of how Chicagoans gather together to show pride in their diverse communities. \nGather Together: Chicago Street Photography by Diane Alexander White will be exhibited at the National Hellenic Museum through April 30\, 2023. SUMMARY:The Promised Land
DESCRIPTION:Eleven artists with ties to North and South of the Mason-Dixon Line respond to just how much Black life has always been in transit. \n  \nThe Great Migration was one of the largest movements of people in United States history. It has transformed cities like Chicago\, Detroit\, New York and Pittsburgh between 1916 and 1970. Chicago received more than 500\,000 Black Southern Americans during this time.\n  \nTo Southern Blacks\, Chicago was considered the “Promised Land”. Stories of big city life — jobs with good wages\, homes with running water\, and basic freedoms denied to Blacks in the South — made the Northern city a prime destination for Blacks coming from below the Mason-Dixon line. As the most documented migration in US history\, photographers like Gordon Parks\, Florestine Perrault Collins\, Moneta Sleet Jr.\, Roy DeCarava\, and Coreen Simpson created imagery that demonstrated Black life in movement.\n\nToday\, contemporary artists and image makers respond to the many migrations of African Diaspora peoples and the influences of these movements in their work.

SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book
DESCRIPTION:“The Negro Motorist Green Book” guided Black Americans to thousands of businesses for over thirty years. When the first “Green Book” was published\, the American road was a metaphor for freedom: freedom to change your present situation\, determine your destiny\, and travel. Yet\, in 20th-century America\, this same road was a dangerous place for Black travelers. The land was divided by segregation — through policy and through custom. For Black people\, the prejudice was severe: a systematic effort to deny their basic human rights. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” communities that explicitly prohibited Black travelers from staying overnight\, the “Green Book” offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nNow\, through The Negro Motorist Green Book\, visitors will explore film\, photographs\, interactives\, and oral histories from travelers and “Green Book” business owners; compare “Green Book” sites then and now; and appreciate historical objects from the Smithsonian and from a variety of “Green Book” sites. The exhibition includes artifacts from business signs and postcards to historic footage\, images\, and firsthand accounts that illustrate not just the apprehension felt by Black travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation\, and elegance of people choosing to live a full American existence. \nDeveloped by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with award-winning author\, photographer\, and cultural documentarian\, Candacy Taylor\, Green Book offers an immersive look at the historic reality of travel for Black Americans and how the guide served as an indispensable resource for the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States. The exhibition highlights destinations created by Black Americans and strategies that affirmed their humanity\, their worth\, their light\, and their lives – and how it was done with ingenuity\, community\, and with help from Victor Green and his travel guide: “The Negro Motorist Green Book.”

SUMMARY:Dinner and a Movie
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Feb. 2\, 5 p.m. dinner and 5:30 p.m. movie \nWe have the great opportunity to be able to show “Historjà – Stitches for Sápmi” at the Museum. The movie has won numerous awards in Sweden. Britta Marakatt-Labba is part in “Arctic Highways” on display in the main gallery. It is in Swedish and Sami with English subtitles. \nAbout Historja:\nBefore being the title of Thomas Jackson’s documentary\, Historjá is the name that Swedish artist Britta Marakatt-Labba gave to her 24-meter-long tapestry in which she describes the fights of the Sámi culture\, to which she belongs\, for the acknowledgment of their identity and history. Leitmotifs\, images\, reminiscences and values of a native people who was settled in the northern part of Fennoscandia – along the borders between Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, and Russia – are at the core of one of the world’s leading Swedish artists\, who works almost exclusively with needle and thread\, as well as of the film dedicated to her. The director follows her work and thought regarding major contemporary issues\, in the first place climate change and the fight for the right of ethnic minorities. And\, while Britta Marakatt-Labba prepares an important exhibition in Germany (Documenta 14\, Kassel) and invites the audience to get closer to the material and ideal universe of her productions\, in the faraway land of the Sámi (which its inhabitants call Sapmí) her son carries on the century-old tradition of pastoral farming immersed in a universe suspended between past and present\, utopia and reality. \nWatch the trailer here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15518656/  \nCost for dinner and movie is $25 for members and $20 for non-members. Advance registration required. \nIn-Person Registration \nLivestream Registration \nJoin us for a conversation with historians Tara Zahra and Kevin Boyle about Dr. Zahra’s new book\, Against the World: Anti-Globalism and Mass Politics Between the World Wars. They will discuss how nationalism\, rather than internationalism\, came to ensnare world politics in the early twentieth century. \nBefore World War I\, enthusiasm for a borderless world seemed to be gaining traction. And yet a backlash against globalization was growing. As the war progressed\, air escaped from the globalist balloon in the United States and across Europe\, where war and disease led to mass societal upheaval. \nAgainst the World will be available for purchase in the Newberry Bookshop\, as will Dr. Boyle’s recent book\, The Shattering: America in the 1960s. Both authors will sign books after the program.

DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate La Candelaria Day with us!!!\nFood and Art Workshops!\nWe are waiting for you this February 3 from 4 to 6 p.m.\n\n\nIn 2017\, parent leaders from 4 local schools\, (Kanoon Elementary Magnet\, Saucedo Scholastic Academy\, Spry Elementary Community and Hammond Elementary)\, came to us for support on recreating the Traditional Mexican Winter Celebrations in our community. The idea was to provide the families in the community a space where these annual celebrations can be experienced and passed on to their children. These celebrations are focused on gathering families to sing\, walk\, dance\, perform\, make and break pinatas\, provide art activities and create a space for parents to share their stories from their childhood with their children\, family\, and friends.\nThese celebrations begin with the “Posada” in December\, followed by “La Rosca de Reyes” in January\, and close off on “El Dia de La Candelaria” in February. The first posada was such a great success\, with over 300 residents attending each event\, we knew we had to continue these celebrations.\nWe are proud and excited to announce in collaboration with parent leaders from Kanoon Elementary Magnet School\, Saucedo Scholastic Academy\, Spry Elementary Community School\, and Hammond Elementary School we will be hosting our 5th annual series of traditional Mexican events:\n-La POSADA NAVIDEÑA will be: Thursday\, December 22nd 2022 from 4p – 7p at OPEN Center for the Arts\n-LA ROSCA DE REYES will be: Friday\, January 6th 2022 from 4p-6p at OPEN Center for the Arts\n-EL DIA DE LA CANDELARIA will be on Friday\, February 3rd 2022 from 4p-6p at OPEN Center for the Arts\nThere will be La Posada\, Los Peregrinos\, Los Villancicos\, Los Aguinaldos\, Las Piñatas\, Los Tamales\, Los Buñuelos\, La Rosca\, Los Monito\, El Chocolate\, El Pozole\, El Champurrado\, El Ponche\, La Fruta\, La Musica\, Los Talleres de Arte y Los Premios. These events will be open for all to Enjoy and Remember.

DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy a live performance in our 5th Floor ballroom showcasing the works of three of Germany’s most beloved composers\, “The Three Bs: A Concert of Music by Bach\, Beethoven and Brahms.” This special concert will feature the singing of bass-baritone Andrew Schultze and Svetlana Belsky on the piano in a performance of songs\, arias and keyboard. \nAndrew Schultze is an active performer\, conductor\, stage director and teacher. He is well known as an interpreter of the standard opera/oratorio repertoire\, as a concert singer\, and as a specialist in the performance of early music. He has performed around the world including Austria\, France\, Italy and more. His rich voice and lively conversation is welcome by guests and audience members. \nAndrew will be accompanied by Svetlana Belsky\, an in-demand recitalist and chamber pianist\, noted for her remarkable rapport with audiences and stylistic versatility.
