SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book
DESCRIPTION:“The Negro Motorist Green Book” guided Black Americans to thousands of businesses for over thirty years. When the first “Green Book” was published\, the American road was a metaphor for freedom: freedom to change your present situation\, determine your destiny\, and travel. Yet\, in 20th-century America\, this same road was a dangerous place for Black travelers. The land was divided by segregation — through policy and through custom. For Black people\, the prejudice was severe: a systematic effort to deny their basic human rights. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” communities that explicitly prohibited Black travelers from staying overnight\, the “Green Book” offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nNow\, through The Negro Motorist Green Book\, visitors will explore film\, photographs\, interactives\, and oral histories from travelers and “Green Book” business owners; compare “Green Book” sites then and now; and appreciate historical objects from the Smithsonian and from a variety of “Green Book” sites. The exhibition includes artifacts from business signs and postcards to historic footage\, images\, and firsthand accounts that illustrate not just the apprehension felt by Black travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation\, and elegance of people choosing to live a full American existence. \nDeveloped by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with award-winning author\, photographer\, and cultural documentarian\, Candacy Taylor\, Green Book offers an immersive look at the historic reality of travel for Black Americans and how the guide served as an indispensable resource for the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States. The exhibition highlights destinations created by Black Americans and strategies that affirmed their humanity\, their worth\, their light\, and their lives – and how it was done with ingenuity\, community\, and with help from Victor Green and his travel guide: “The Negro Motorist Green Book.”

SUMMARY:Aesthetics of Loss
DESCRIPTION:AESTHETICS OF LOSS is a collection of work by seven artists who have experienced loss of family members recently. Their studios became places for grieving and understanding the sudden vacuum of losing loved ones either suddenly or over a long period of illness. Caregiving\, memory\, helplessness\, loss and the ultimate mystery of death are explored through painting\, print-making\, fibers\, ceramics\, photography\, installation and video. Some artists utilize objects and clothing left behind by their loved ones and transform them into artworks and some use ritual and natural materials as memorial or commemorative actions of grieving and coming to terms. \nEbti is a multidisciplinary artist\, a self-taught photographer and a translator living between Cairo and San Francisco. She received her MFA in Fine Art from the California College of the Arts in 2021. Her practice is informed by languages\, theater\, literature\, music and her family’s making-traditions she never got to learn. Through this multi- faceted\, dislocated lens she looks at the ideas of home\, belonging\, and attachment. Though her work is rooted in photography\, she is constantly looking for new materials and methods that will best translate her ideas. Once she starts working on a project\, she embraces notions of accident and failure. Her practice is ever-evolving and is influenced by her restlessness. \nCassidy Early (b. 1994\, Worcester\, MA) is a nonbinary Scottish American artist living and working in Chicago\, IL. They graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a MFA in Painting in 2020 and received their BFA from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts in 2016. Early’s work has been featured in a solo exhibition with Lauren Powell Projects\, (Los Angeles\, CA)\, a three person exhibition with Olympia (New York\, NY)\, and larger group exhibitions with La Loma Projects (Pasadena\, CA)\, Green Gallery (Milwaukee\, WI)\, The Salon at The Wing Chicago (Chicago\, IL)\, and in I Like Your Work\, Podcast. Their work has been published alongside Garth Green- well’s essay Making Meaning: Against Relevance in Art in Harper’s Magazine (Nov. 2020)\, and as the LVL3 Artist of the Week (Nov. 2020). \nBrianna L. Hernández is a Chicana artist\, curator\, educator\, and death doula guided by socially-engaged values. In developing as an artist\, Brianna credits her late mother\, Sylvia D. Hernández\, as her most significant mentor. Brianna’s studio practice focuses on end-of-life care\, grieving processes\, and mourning rituals based on lived experience\, cultural research\, and collaborations with peers. In addition to formal artworks\, she offers workshops or viewers to self-educate on grief and end-of-life planning through the safety of the creative process. As a curator\, Brianna works with artists to make socially-charged topics publicly accessible in order to create opportunities for education and empathy. She also collaborates with community health researchers to incorporate the arts into public health projects through curatorial consulting. Brianna proudly serves as Director of Curation and Board Secretary at Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton\, New York. \nLinda b. Marcus (b. 1961\, Los Angeles\, California) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. Drawing on her long history as a storyteller in journalism and fashion\, Marcus now focuses on fiber\, sculpture and photography. Marcus’s work has been exhibited widely in Wisconsin including the Museum of Wisconsin Art\, The Trout Museum\, the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and fiber arts and the Charles Allis Museum as well as numerousgalleries and in several publications. Marcus is currently pursuing her MFA at the School of The Art Institute in Chicago\, Illinois. Marcus has been awarded several residencies including on at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Currently\, Marcus is the creative director for the Saint Kate Arts hotel in Milwaukee where she continues to push the limits of contemporary art and provide a platform for other artists. \nJessica Meuninck-Ganger’s prints\, artist’s books and large-scale hybrid media works have been exhibited in museums and both experimental and commercial galleries regionally\, nationally and internationally. Her art is included in several private and public collections\, including the Weisman Museum of Art\, Marcus Corporation (Saint Kate Arts Hotel)\, Northwestern Mutual\, Target Corporation\, and in contemporary publications\, such as Andrea Ferber’s\, Sustenance: Contemporary Printmaking Now\, Richard Noyce’s\, Printmaking Beyond the Edge\, and Nathaniel Stern’s\, Interactive Art and Embodiment: The Implicit Body as Performance. Jessica earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education from Ball State University\, Muncie\, Indiana and MFA in Studio Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design\, Minneapolis\, Minnesota. She is currently the Print and Narrative Forms Area Head and Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee\, Wisconsin\, USA. \nNirmal Raja is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Milwaukee. She had lived in India\, South Korea\, and Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States thirty-two years ago. She holds a BA in English Literature from St. Francis College in Hyderabad\, India; a BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design\, and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She has participated in solo and group shows in the Midwest\, nationally\, and internationally. SUMMARY:Ukraine Will Resurrect!
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to the exhibition UKRAINE WILL RESURRECT!\nApril 7-30\, 2023.\nOpening: Friday\, April 7 at 7:00 p.m.\nFor over a year\, each event in the Ukrainian National Museum is a reminder of the war against Ukraine by russian terrorists\, which takes the best\, killing children\, schoolchildren\, students\, civilians\, and soldiers who defend the whole world from Putin’s aggression.\nThe international exhibit titled “Unissued Diplomas and their unwritten Easter eggs” showcases posthumously issued diplomas to students from Ukraine. The photos of students\, the spiritual meaning of Easter\, and the unwritten Easter eggs tell a sacred story of deceased people. These students died from rocket attacks and shelling during the evacuation\, while on a volunteer mission\, or during fierce battles on the front line.\n“Unissued Diplomas” is a documentary in memory of those Ukrainian students who perished as a result of russian aggression against Ukraine and will never become graduates.\nFebruary 24\, 2022\, is written in history as the day when Ukraine woke to air raid sirens\, rockets\, and shelling.\nThe Kyiv-Mohyla Academy exchange program at the University of Toronto and the Ukrainian-Canadian Union of Students (SUSK) were the organizers of the project – “We want to honor the memory of Ukrainian students who sacrificed their education\, life goals\, aspirations\, and dreams for the sake of our country.”\nThe international exhibition is presented in 45 universities and many Ukrainian embassies in 22 countries.\nThe Ukrainian National Museum supports Mark Tomashek’s initiative\, a student from Lviv\, and community activist Liliia Popovych from Chicago\, and presents this project within the exhibition “UKRAINE WILL RESURRECT!”. The show was previously displayed at the University of Illinois.\nMuseum visitors will enjoy a fantastic palette of Pysanky (Easter Eggs). The exhibit will include pysanky created by Anna Chychula\, Pysanka Artist (Pysankarka)\, from Oleg Kurylo’s private collection\, and paintings from the museum’s collection. Anna Chychula learned the art of writing pysanky from her mother\, Parania Dudycz\, who survived World War II as a young woman and came to the US as a refugee from the Displaced Persons Camps with her husband Ivan and their young children. Anna’s pysanky are amulets embedded with prayers for the Victory of Ukraine and faith in its Armed Forces. Symbols for Easter eggs are carefully selected. The octagonal star symbolizes the unity of two crosses and creates harmony and peace; oak leaves are symbols of strength.\nTogether to Victory!\nCurator Maria Klimchak\, co-curator Anna Chychula.

SUMMARY:From BordersCruzadas to Borderlines
DESCRIPTION:Immigration is one of the most politicized issues in the United States\, as politicians across both aisles debate the fate of people fleeing violence\, poverty\, trafficking\, hunger\, and [political instability. ART WORKS Projects presents From BordersCruzadas to Borderlines\, a discussion between photographers Will Sands\, Oscar Castillo (BordersCruzadas project] and Cathy Edelman\, from Illinois based nonprofit CASE Art Fund [Borderlines exhibition]\, presenting two sides of a very complex issue facing the US Southern border. \nBordersCruzadas: A Collaborative Story recognizes that people impacted by displacement are often excluded from the conversations that determine their fate. Through documentary photography and content collaboratively created with four people fleeing their homeland\, BordersCruzadas explores the physical and symbolic boundaries that define the lived experience of those seeking to cross the United States’ southern border. \nBorderlines is CASE Art Fund’s ongoing photographic exhibition about the Juarez/Texas/New Mexico border. At Expo Chicago\, CASE will recreate the Sunland Park\, NM desert\, the site of the most recent crossings in the El Paso region. The exhibition includes photographs of the terrain\, objects found in the desert\, photographs and videos of helicopters and border patrol searching the desert\, and a poignant interview from a local proprietor whose business is the site of most desert crossings today and in 2022. \nFrom BordersCruzadas to Borderlines will be held in person at ART WORKS Projects\, 625 N Kingsbury St\, Chicago\, on Wednesday\, April 12. \nDoors open at 5 pm to for an early preview of an exhibition in development\, BordersCruzadas. \nThe presentation and discussion will be from 6:00 – 7:15 pm.

SUMMARY:Rebecca Makkai and Meg Wolitzer: Novelists on the Craft of Writing
DESCRIPTION:This program will be held in-person at the Newberry and livestreamed on Zoom. The online version of this event will be live captioned. Please register below. \nIn-Person Registration \nLivestream Registration \nThis installment of “Conversations at the Newberry” features award-winning novelists Rebecca Makkai and Meg Wolitzer. \nIn this event\, Chicago author Rebecca Makkai (I Have Some Questions for You\, The Great Believers) will interview New York-based and New York Times bestselling author Meg Wolitzer (The Female Persuasion\, The Interestings) about a life in books\, her growth as an author\, her film adaptations—including 2017’s The Wife—and her new role as host of Public Radio’s popular Selected Shorts podcast. \nThis program also marks the launch of a new series curated by Rebecca Makkai and StoryStudio\, which will pair major visiting authors in conversation with local discussion partners. You’ll also be able to purchase books and have them signed. \n  \nThe event\, generously sponsored by Sue and Melvin Gray and presented in collaboration with StoryStudio Chicago\, is free to the public. \nMakkai’s latest book\, I Have Some Questions for You\, along with her 2018 novel The Great Believers\, are available for purchase at the Newberry Bookshop. \nWolitzer’s novels\, The Female Persuasion (2018) and The Interestings (2013) are available for purchase at the Newberry bookshop.

SUMMARY:Book Talk in Lithuanian: Prof G. Subačius on Simonas Daukantas' Orthography
DESCRIPTION:Kviečiame į susitikimą su Ilinojaus Universiteto profesoriumi\, kalbininku Giedriumi Subačiumi\, kuris neseniai išleido įspūdingo dydžio veikalą „Simono Daukanto Sankt Peterburgo ortografija (1834-1846)“. \nTRANSLATION: \nWe invite you to a presentation by linguist and author Prof. Giedrius Subačius\, from University of Illinois\, who has recently published an impressively sized work entitled “Simon Daukantas’ St Petersburg Orthography (1834-1846)”. The meeting will provide an opportunity to learn more about the 19th Century Lithuanian author Simonas Daukantas’ life and works. Daukantas’ personality\, activities and importance to our history are still not widely known. \nWhat is known or not known about Daukantas\, and what we may never know of him will be explored. Professor Subačius is a true expert on Daukantas\, having written about him in his dissertation\, and more recently he has returned to the subject and published two monographs on Daukantas’ writing. He will talk about what Daukantas did in St Petersburg. For example\, did you know that there he met Valančius\, worked side by side\, and even created his own “Samogitian Academy”? Was it easy and cheap to publish books at that time? Do you know that Daukantas published 13 Lithuanian books in St Petersburg and not all printers understood Daukantas’ Lithuanian texts? What new methods are used today to find out when manuscripts were written? What can spelling tell us in general? Do you know that Daukant’s stable spelling is linked to his spiritual upliftment\, and that the irregularity of his spelling is often the result of despondency\, lack of harmony and illness? \nAll this and more will be revealed at Prof. Giedrius Subačius presentation on Saturday\, April 15 at 2 p.m. at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago\, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nFree admission. Donations and Balzekas Museum membership subscriptions very welcome. \nFor more information\, call 773-582-6500 or e-mail: info@balzekasmuseum.org. \nThis program is sponsored in part by the Members and Donors of the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture and by a CityArts grant from the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
