DESCRIPTION:In this new exhibition\, the Chicago-based Greek American photographer presents 80 historic works showcasing Chicago’s Greek American celebrations alongside other ethnic and cultural festivals and parades\, primarily from the 1970s and 1980s. Depicted events include the Greek Independence Day Parade\, Bud Billiken Day Parade\, Chinese New Year Parade\, Mexican Civic Society Parade\, Jewish Festival and many more. \nThe National Hellenic Museum’s mission is to share Greek history\, art and culture\, and the Greek American experience. Diane’s works vividly capture how Chicago’s Greek American community gathers in the public space to show pride in its identity and share its culture. Through her images of other ethnic and cultural celebrations\, Diane also explores the universality of how Chicagoans gather together to show pride in their diverse communities. \nGather Together: Chicago Street Photography by Diane Alexander White will be exhibited at the National Hellenic Museum through April 30\, 2023. SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book
DESCRIPTION:“The Negro Motorist Green Book” guided Black Americans to thousands of businesses for over thirty years. When the first “Green Book” was published\, the American road was a metaphor for freedom: freedom to change your present situation\, determine your destiny\, and travel. Yet\, in 20th-century America\, this same road was a dangerous place for Black travelers. The land was divided by segregation — through policy and through custom. For Black people\, the prejudice was severe: a systematic effort to deny their basic human rights. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” communities that explicitly prohibited Black travelers from staying overnight\, the “Green Book” offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nNow\, through The Negro Motorist Green Book\, visitors will explore film\, photographs\, interactives\, and oral histories from travelers and “Green Book” business owners; compare “Green Book” sites then and now; and appreciate historical objects from the Smithsonian and from a variety of “Green Book” sites. The exhibition includes artifacts from business signs and postcards to historic footage\, images\, and firsthand accounts that illustrate not just the apprehension felt by Black travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation\, and elegance of people choosing to live a full American existence. \nDeveloped by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with award-winning author\, photographer\, and cultural documentarian\, Candacy Taylor\, Green Book offers an immersive look at the historic reality of travel for Black Americans and how the guide served as an indispensable resource for the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States. The exhibition highlights destinations created by Black Americans and strategies that affirmed their humanity\, their worth\, their light\, and their lives – and how it was done with ingenuity\, community\, and with help from Victor Green and his travel guide: “The Negro Motorist Green Book.”

DESCRIPTION:We invite you to the exhibition UKRAINE WILL RESURRECT!\nApril 7-30\, 2023.\nOpening: Friday\, April 7 at 7:00 p.m.\nFor over a year\, each event in the Ukrainian National Museum is a reminder of the war against Ukraine by russian terrorists\, which takes the best\, killing children\, schoolchildren\, students\, civilians\, and soldiers who defend the whole world from Putin’s aggression.\nThe international exhibit titled “Unissued Diplomas and their unwritten Easter eggs” showcases posthumously issued diplomas to students from Ukraine. The photos of students\, the spiritual meaning of Easter\, and the unwritten Easter eggs tell a sacred story of deceased people. These students died from rocket attacks and shelling during the evacuation\, while on a volunteer mission\, or during fierce battles on the front line.\n“Unissued Diplomas” is a documentary in memory of those Ukrainian students who perished as a result of russian aggression against Ukraine and will never become graduates.\nFebruary 24\, 2022\, is written in history as the day when Ukraine woke to air raid sirens\, rockets\, and shelling.\nThe Kyiv-Mohyla Academy exchange program at the University of Toronto and the Ukrainian-Canadian Union of Students (SUSK) were the organizers of the project – “We want to honor the memory of Ukrainian students who sacrificed their education\, life goals\, aspirations\, and dreams for the sake of our country.”\nThe international exhibition is presented in 45 universities and many Ukrainian embassies in 22 countries.\nThe Ukrainian National Museum supports Mark Tomashek’s initiative\, a student from Lviv\, and community activist Liliia Popovych from Chicago\, and presents this project within the exhibition “UKRAINE WILL RESURRECT!”. The show was previously displayed at the University of Illinois.\nMuseum visitors will enjoy a fantastic palette of Pysanky (Easter Eggs). The exhibit will include pysanky created by Anna Chychula\, Pysanka Artist (Pysankarka)\, from Oleg Kurylo’s private collection\, and paintings from the museum’s collection. Anna Chychula learned the art of writing pysanky from her mother\, Parania Dudycz\, who survived World War II as a young woman and came to the US as a refugee from the Displaced Persons Camps with her husband Ivan and their young children. Anna’s pysanky are amulets embedded with prayers for the Victory of Ukraine and faith in its Armed Forces. Symbols for Easter eggs are carefully selected. The octagonal star symbolizes the unity of two crosses and creates harmony and peace; oak leaves are symbols of strength.\nTogether to Victory!\nCurator Maria Klimchak\, co-curator Anna Chychula.

Castillo and Wil Sands\, which compiles documentary photography\, video\, archival materials\, and personal and political discourse to present the physical and symbolic boundaries that form America’s borders. The resulting images and documents not only provide tangibility to an abstract space but offer those within it visibility and voice.  \nBoth veteran photojournalists\, Castillo and Sands spent months documenting and collaborating with migrants in Mexico and at the US border. SUMMARY:Chicago Latino Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Latino Film Festival began in 1985 with 14 films projected onto a concrete wall for an audience of 500. Today\, the Festival screens close to 100 films from all over Latin America\, the Caribbean\, Spain\, Portugal and the United States. \nThe Festival offers Chicago film lovers from all walks of life the opportunity to view films that might otherwise be inaccessible because they have yet to secure a distributor or streaming deal. Its programming reflects recent trends in Iberoamerican cinema\, from films that have become a sensation in the international festival circuit or were box-office hits in their country of origin or have yet to be released theatrically. \nThe Chicago Latino Film Festival is produced by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago\, a pan-Latino\, nonprofit\, multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to developing\, promoting and increasing awareness of Latino cultures by presenting a wide variety of art forms and education including film\, music\, dance\, visual arts\, comedy and theater. Imperative to the ILCC mission is to increase cultural opportunities for the Latino community\, as well as\, create a cultural dialogue amongst Latinos and non-Latinos to discuss universal cross-cultural experiences.

A limited number of tickets will be available for this screening on April 23 at 5:00 p.m.\, followed by a discussion at 6:15pm via zoom with filmmaker Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso. The watch party will feature light snacks and refreshments at the Mitchell Museum. \nPowerlands \nA young Navajo filmmaker investigates displacement of Indigenous people and devastation of the environment caused by the same chemical companies that have exploited the land where she was born. On this personal and political journey she learns from Indigenous activists across three continents. Website: https://powerlands.org/ \nFilmmaker: \nIvey-Camille Manybeads Tso – Director Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso is an award-winning queer Navajo filmmaker. She was a fellow with the Firelight Media Documentary Filmmaker Lab\, and the 4th World Indigenous Media Lab. She started making films at the age of 9\, through the Native youth media project Outta Your Backpack Media. At the age of 13 she made the award-winning fiction film In the Footsteps of Yellow Woman\, based in the true story of her great-great-great grandmother Yellow Woman\, who lived through the Navajo Long Walk of 1864-1868. The film screened in over 90 film festivals internationally and won 11 awards. Ivey Camille continued to refine her filmmaking craft with a full scholarship to Idyllwild Arts Academy in California. She later returned home to work on films in her community of Navajo Nation. At the age of 19\, Ivey Camille began work on Powerlands\, her first feature. Powerlands has screened internationally and won several festival awards including the The 2022 Rigoberta Menchú Grand Prize. \nDirectors Statement \nMy grandmother taught me how to stand on the frontlines. She taught me about the ways that my ancestors have resisted displacement since colonial settlers came here. When thinking about how to tell the stories in this film\, I think first about the storytelling traditions I have learned from elders in my community. That is why this story is told through the stories\, voices\, and languages of Indigenous women. \nI started making films at the age of nine\, through the Native youth media project Outta Your Backpack Media. At the age of 13\, I directed In the Footsteps of Yellow Woman\, based in the true story of my great-great-great grandmother Yellow Woman\, who lived through the Navajo Long Walk of 1864- 1868. At the age of 19\, I started Powerlands\, which took six years to film and edit. \nFor too long\, others have been telling our stories. As an Indigenous filmmaker\, I have seen the ways in which our stories are co-opted and stolen. This film is an intervention\, a chance for our stories to be told by us\, in our own languages. \nAll proceeds will support our Indigenous Medicine and Traditional Food Gardens. All ages are welcome to attend with a caregiver for this free (with admission) program.
