SUMMARY:The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness
DESCRIPTION:South Asia Institute is pleased to announce its new exhibition\, “The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\,” in collaboration with the Paglees. \nThe Paglees is a feminist collective of artists of South Asian origin living across the United States. Paglee or pagli means crazy woman in a number of South Asian languages. The Paglees are: Fawzia Khan\, Indrani Nayar-Gall\, Monica Jahan Bose\, Nirmal Raja\, Pallavi Sharma\, Renluka Maharaj\, and Shelly Bahl. \nIn their debut exhibition\, The Paglees investigate – with fierceness\, beauty\, and wit – the impact on women of generations of patriarchy\, religion\, white supremacy\, colonialism\, violence\, capitalism\, and environmental plunder. \nThe title of the exhibition derives from Rosa Parks’ words: “There is just so much hurt\, disappointment and oppression one can take. The bubble of life grows larger. The line between reason and madness grows thinner.” (Rosa Parks: Writings\, Notes and Statements\,1956-58). \nFeaturing mixed-media works on paper\, fabric\, and canvas\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, installation\, and moving image\, The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\, questions and reframes the labeling of non-conforming women as crazy and the marginalization of immigrant women of color. This collective exhibition presents new decolonial narratives that center the reason and wisdom of brown women of the Global South and diaspora\, and provide pathways to a creative feminist future. The Paglees believe in working in collaboration with other marginalized communities to build bridges and demand social\, environmental\, and legal justice for all. \nTHE PAGLEES\nFawzia Khan | Indrani Nayar-Gall | Monica Jahan Bose | Nirmal Raja | Pallavi Sharma | Renluka Maharaj | Shelly Bahl

SUMMARY:Notes from the Field
DESCRIPTION:Witness the powerful stories of 19 individuals fighting to overcome and transform America’s education and criminal justice systems.\nTHIS STRIKINGLY INTIMATE PIECE presents snapshots from a variety of real people\, documenting their intersections with the American dream and the obstacles that work to block them from it. Utilizing verbatim dialogue pulled from more than 250 accounts from students\, faculty\, prisoners\, activists\, politicians\, and victims’ families\, Notes from the Field takes audiences on an emotional journey through the faults and injustices of an American criminal justice system that seems more focused on incarceration over education. Deeply human\, profoundly moving\, and full of moments of humor\, compassion\, and resilience\, it’s a masterful work that asks you to observe\, be present\, and join the call for urgent and necessary change. \nOriginally performed by creator Anna Deavere Smith as a one-woman show\, in TimeLine’s Chicago premiere\, three actors weave together narratives of change makers\, activists\, and those caught within the system for an evening of theatre unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

SUMMARY:What You See Is What You Get By Johan Wahlstrom
DESCRIPTION:Wahlstrom is a 5th generation Swedish artist from Stockholm. He began his artistic career in music and transitioned to painting in 1998. He often pulls inspiration from his previous career as a musician and from his experiences traveling the world. Wahlstrom continuously looks to critique and re-frame society through his comedic\, abstract style. In “What You See Is What You Get” Wahlstrom reconnects with the artists who originally inspired him such as Wassily Kandinsky\, Franz Marc\, Karel Appel\, and Asger Jorn. Pieces in this series comment on political and social concerns such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and current Swedish politics.

SUMMARY:"Unearth" at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:“Unearth” is on display now through March 10 at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art\, featuring three Chicago-based painters who find beauty and meaning in everyday urban scenes\, drawing back to the tradition of early 20th century painters. \n\nKaren Perl\, Emily Rapport and Gwendolyn Zabicki similarly capture the buildings\, streets\, neighborhoods and casual interactions that make up the backdrop of everyday\, urban life and reflect on how we live\, while echoing the Chicago community’s history. Clark\,” Zabicki’s “Man Watching Baseball” and Rapaport’s “Damen Ave Nocturne.”\n\n\n\nEntry to the museum is free and visiting hours are 11am – 5p on Wednesdays – Sundays.

SUMMARY:Felisa Rincón de Gautier Awards 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join Us As We Honor 6 Exemplary Members of our Community! \nPRAA invites you to attend the 2024 Felisa Rincón de Gautier Awards event. \nThis event was created in 2017 to honor Felisa Rincón de Gautier (1897 –1994) who was the first woman to be elected as the Mayor of a capital city in the Americas. SUMMARY:Drag History Movie Night
DESCRIPTION:Drag history movie night\, featuring a pop up exhibit and panel featuring Irregular Girl\, Kinley Preston\, James Hosking\, and James Conley. \nJoin us for a screening of two exquisite short documentaries taking us behind the scenes for frank\, tender glimpses into the lives\, loves\, and the artistry of drag performers. The recently re-discovered and preserved First Impressions (Pat Lehman\, 1977\, 25 min.) gives performers at a Denver drag club a platform to speak with candor and humor as they prepare for the evening’s performance\, a precious and rare document of drag and queer life in the 1970s. James Hosking’s acclaimed Beautiful by Night (2014\, 29 min.) is a loving portrait of three older drag performers at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district as they share their musings on art\, aging\, and self-acceptance. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the past and present of drag\, featuring drag performers Irregular Girl and Kinley Preston\, filmmaker James Hosking\, and curator and co-chair of Gerber/Hart Library & Archives\, James Conley. The event is a partnership between the Leather Archives & Museum\, Media Burn Archive\, and Gerber/Hart Library & Archives.
