SUMMARY:The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness
DESCRIPTION:South Asia Institute is pleased to announce its new exhibition\, “The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\,” in collaboration with the Paglees. \nThe Paglees is a feminist collective of artists of South Asian origin living across the United States. Paglee or pagli means crazy woman in a number of South Asian languages. The Paglees are: Fawzia Khan\, Indrani Nayar-Gall\, Monica Jahan Bose\, Nirmal Raja\, Pallavi Sharma\, Renluka Maharaj\, and Shelly Bahl. \nIn their debut exhibition\, The Paglees investigate – with fierceness\, beauty\, and wit – the impact on women of generations of patriarchy\, religion\, white supremacy\, colonialism\, violence\, capitalism\, and environmental plunder. \nThe title of the exhibition derives from Rosa Parks’ words: “There is just so much hurt\, disappointment and oppression one can take. The bubble of life grows larger. The line between reason and madness grows thinner.” (Rosa Parks: Writings\, Notes and Statements\,1956-58). \nFeaturing mixed-media works on paper\, fabric\, and canvas\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, installation\, and moving image\, The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\, questions and reframes the labeling of non-conforming women as crazy and the marginalization of immigrant women of color. This collective exhibition presents new decolonial narratives that center the reason and wisdom of brown women of the Global South and diaspora\, and provide pathways to a creative feminist future. SUMMARY:Arte de La Borinqueña - Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. The story emerged during a critical period for the Puerto Rican people\, marked by an economic crisis and natural disasters in the Caribbean. La Borinqueña has transcended fiction\, evolving into a philanthropic superhero movement with a collection of graphic novels\, a special benefit anthology with DC Comics titled Ricanstruction\, and noteworthy partnerships with NRDC\, Chocolate Cortés\, and others.

Focusing on their work from 1870 – 1920 (BEFORE they had the vote)\, we consider where and how these women laid the foundations of reforms that support Chicago’s vibrant and diverse communities through local\, state\, and national policies that continue to this day. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM PRESENTER\nCAC docent Catherine Thomson is a professional property manager and an avid social justice activist. She is also one-half of HERstory\, a duo of women honoring the achievements of women through musical storytelling programs such as The 19th Amendment and the Power of the Vote\, Trailblazing Female Firsts\, and debuting March 9th\, A Century of Songwriting Sisters. DESCRIPTION:“Lay of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” will open on Friday\, April 5 at 6 p.m. with\nartists Dragos Alexandrescu\, Linnéa Therese Dimitriou\, Heidi-Anett Haugen\, Hanna\nKanto\, Lotta Lampa\, Patricia Rodas\, Anastasia Savinova\, and Madelaine Sillfors.\nProfoundly influenced by Nordic culture\, landscape\, and even weather\, the Art\nAlliance of the Arctic South (A-A-A-S) consists of eight artists whose work spans\nmedium and scale—from intricate collages and life-size sculptural installations to\nevocative video pieces and design objects. Their synergy stems from a shared ethos: a\ndeep-rooted connection to nature\, and a place-specific gaze upon environmental and\ncultural discourses. With this comes an unraveling of identity—both personal and\ncollective. DESCRIPTION:The Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center is hosting their very own Jazz Appreciation Month series of events. This years line-up includes Chris Madsen\, Raíces Latin Jazz\, Julián Pujols Quall\, La Cantera & Friends Jam Session at The California Clipper\, and Gabriel Rodriguez. This event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial master class for aspiring young musicians with Chicago-based saxophonist Chris Madsen. Participating performing ensembles include College of DuPage Jazz Combo led by Matt Shevitz and SRBCC’s La Cantera. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaíces was modeled on the famous Cal Tjader Quintet of the 1950’s & 60’s by the late Chicago percussionist Rubén Alvarez and is now led by vibraphonist Joe Sonnefeldt. Since their post-pandemic return\, the group has thrilled audiences at area music festivals and Chicago performance venues. Raíces includes Stuart Seale on piano\, Eric Ferrer on bassist \, Bobby Delgado on timbales\, and Jorge Leal on congas.\n\n\nJulián Pujols Quall and Jonathan Suazo bring two music projects together in an exploration of Afro-Puerto Rican and Afro-Dominican Jazz.\n\n\n\nAfter playing alongside New York Times’ “Top 10 Jazz Musicians of 2023” Jonathan Suazo and Santana’s Paoli Mejías\, La Cantera is hosting a Jazz Appreciation Month Jam session with some of Chicago’s top jazz artists as part of their monthly residency at The California Clipper in Humboldt Park. Ibemhal’s whole life has been dedicated to raising her two daughters while trying to find her own identity in new places. Who is Ibemhal beyond her identity as a mother and a wife? What was her life like in Manipur? \nPrasuna (30)\, Ibemhal’s eldest daughter longs to understand the person that is her mother. Prasuna’s bond with her mother is shaped by the conflict-ridden socio-political environment in which she was raised\, patriarchal expectations of being a woman in a Nepali society and years of living apart. When Ibemhal returns to Nepal to visit Prasuna in 2020\, both of them take a trip to Manipur to visit Ibemhal’s mother\, Prasuna’s grand mother. \nThis 73 minutes deeply personal observational documentary explores the relationship between mothers and daughters and unearths layers of their childhood\, youth and past traumas. Prasuna tries to come to terms with the differences she has with her mother and seeks a way to define her own life. \nAbout the director \nPrasuna is a documentary filmmaker from Kathmandu. She works as a DocLab Coordinator at kimff and is one of the Filmmaker Mentors for the Camera Sika project run by The British Council Nepal. She was also one of the Filmmaker Fellows of One World Media’s Global Short Doc Forum 2021. Her documentary ‘Dolpa Diary’ (2019) was screened at many film festivals in and outside of Nepal. The documentary was awarded in the category of Best Adventure Film at kimff 2018 and Best Woman Filmmaker at Human Rights International Film Festival (HRIFF) 2019. Prasuna’s work broadly concerns collective memory and an in-depth account of personal experiences.
