SUMMARY:The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness
DESCRIPTION:South Asia Institute is pleased to announce its new exhibition\, “The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\,” in collaboration with the Paglees. \nThe Paglees is a feminist collective of artists of South Asian origin living across the United States. Paglee or pagli means crazy woman in a number of South Asian languages. The Paglees are: Fawzia Khan\, Indrani Nayar-Gall\, Monica Jahan Bose\, Nirmal Raja\, Pallavi Sharma\, Renluka Maharaj\, and Shelly Bahl. \nIn their debut exhibition\, The Paglees investigate – with fierceness\, beauty\, and wit – the impact on women of generations of patriarchy\, religion\, white supremacy\, colonialism\, violence\, capitalism\, and environmental plunder. \nThe title of the exhibition derives from Rosa Parks’ words: “There is just so much hurt\, disappointment and oppression one can take. The bubble of life grows larger. The line between reason and madness grows thinner.” (Rosa Parks: Writings\, Notes and Statements\,1956-58). \nFeaturing mixed-media works on paper\, fabric\, and canvas\, sculpture\, performance\, photography\, installation\, and moving image\, The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness\, questions and reframes the labeling of non-conforming women as crazy and the marginalization of immigrant women of color. This collective exhibition presents new decolonial narratives that center the reason and wisdom of brown women of the Global South and diaspora\, and provide pathways to a creative feminist future. The Paglees believe in working in collaboration with other marginalized communities to build bridges and demand social\, environmental\, and legal justice for all. \nTHE PAGLEES\nFawzia Khan | Indrani Nayar-Gall | Monica Jahan Bose | Nirmal Raja | Pallavi Sharma | Renluka Maharaj | Shelly Bahl

SUMMARY:Arte de La Borinqueña - Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. The story emerged during a critical period for the Puerto Rican people\, marked by an economic crisis and natural disasters in the Caribbean. La Borinqueña has transcended fiction\, evolving into a philanthropic superhero movement with a collection of graphic novels\, a special benefit anthology with DC Comics titled Ricanstruction\, and noteworthy partnerships with NRDC\, Chocolate Cortés\, and others.

SUMMARY:“Lay Of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“Lay of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” will open on Friday\, April 5 at 6 p.m. with\nartists Dragos Alexandrescu\, Linnéa Therese Dimitriou\, Heidi-Anett Haugen\, Hanna\nKanto\, Lotta Lampa\, Patricia Rodas\, Anastasia Savinova\, and Madelaine Sillfors.\nProfoundly influenced by Nordic culture\, landscape\, and even weather\, the Art\nAlliance of the Arctic South (A-A-A-S) consists of eight artists whose work spans\nmedium and scale—from intricate collages and life-size sculptural installations to\nevocative video pieces and design objects. Their synergy stems from a shared ethos: a\ndeep-rooted connection to nature\, and a place-specific gaze upon environmental and\ncultural discourses. With this comes an unraveling of identity—both personal and\ncollective. The vast\, almost otherworldly Nordic landscapes serve as both muse and\nnarrative\, embodying themes of colonization (literal and figurative\,) ecological\ndevastation\, and the continual process of mourning and healing. \nFrom their unique vantage points in peripheral locations\, far removed from traditional\nart centers\, the artists offer a distinct and intimate perspective\, shedding light on\nworldwide socio-economic dilemmas and the imminent climate crisis. A heavy\nphysical presence permeates their work\, reflecting both past and present\, tradition and\ncontemporaneity. Vulnerability and empathy underscore their narratives\, prompting\ndeeper existential introspection as they urge viewers to ponder art’s pivotal role amidst\nglobal shifts\, raising imperative questions about our shared future.\nIn essence\, the A-A-A-S encapsulates a delicate balance between the old and the new\,\nthe local and the global. Introducing Northern Scandinavia’s next-wave artists to the\nUnited States\, this group exhibition is set to challenge\, provoke\, and inspire\,\nprompting us all to consider our collective path and the pressing need for change.\nUltimately\, it urges a look inward—to the roots and to the self.\nThe Swedish American Museum has shared art\, culture\, and history from throughout\nthe world and this next Main Gallery exhibit opening provides visitors with an\nopportunity to meet the artists behind the pieces on display. Lay Of(f) the Land:\nNordic Narratives is curated by Vasia Rigou. The exhibit is open at the Swedish\nAmerican Museum from April 5 – June 16.

SUMMARY:Guerrilla Television: The Revolutions of Early Independent Video Symposium
DESCRIPTION:When video cameras first became widely available in the late 1960s\, a global network of artists\, activists\, and documentarians quickly had the same realization: video is not merely a new format; video will change EVERYTHING about moving image media. Over the next decade-plus\, idealistic videomakers fought to overturn the top-down hierarchies of the film and TV industries to create a true “people’s television” that encouraged participation\, feedback\, and contributions from its audience. The proponents of Guerrilla Television threw out the rules of media\, filming ordinary people in their own communities\, and the revolution quickly spread. The result was a remarkably democratic movement\, one in which communities that rarely appeared on network television- women\, poor people\, people of color\, political radicals\, queer people – told their own stories. \nThis event is co-presented by Media Burn Archive\, University of Chicago\, and Video Data Bank.

SUMMARY:Closing Night: 40th Chicago Latino Film Festival "Milogna"
DESCRIPTION:Closing Night is a night of celebration in which we commemorate the films shown at the festival and come together to officially bring the event to a close. \nCome join us again for another very special evening at the DAVIS Theatre (4614 N. Lincoln. Ave) Doors Open at 5:30pm and the Program will begin at 6:15pm. \nThe event ticket is $75 ($65 for ILCC Members) and includes the film “Milonga”\, food\, drinks and live music during the special reception at DANK HAUS after the film. \nTickets will be available on March 7th\, 2024 through the link below. \nParking is Free and Meter Parking on the Street and Pay Lots are also available. (4519 N. Lincoln\, 2357 W. Leland Ave & 4650 N. Western) \nSix months after her husband’s death\, Rosa lives alone in the family home and with her memories of a violent relationship. Rosa doesn’t even dare enter her husband’s private office. Her son is in jail and makes it quite clear that the less he hears from her the better. A friend tells her of a new milonga but Rosa hesitates. She hires Juan\, a local handyman and fellow tango lover\, to do some work around the house. She is clearly attracted to him. But is Juan her knight in shining armor? Shot entirely from Rosa’s point of view\, “Milonga” is a quietly observant film about the psychological mark and almost paralyzing fear left behind by an abusive relationship. Paulina García delivers a stunning and moving performance in Laura González’s quietly powerful feature debut.

SUMMARY:Palestinian Tatreez Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Through needle\, thread and color\, the art of Tatreez tells a story about the maker and history of their family. Tatreez\, or embroidery\, is a rich artistic tradition that has been passed down across generations in Arab culture. See Kaftans\, Thobes and Abayas that feature traditional patterns and embroidery brought out from our collection up-close during this event. \nThere will be a limited number of Tatreez kits to giveaway* for visitors at this event to practice their skills at home. \n*Tatreez Kit Giveaway will be on a first-come-first-serve basis until kits are no longer available.  \nProgramming takes place on a Wednesday\, which is free for Illinois residents. SUMMARY:Art Deco Outside of the Loop
DESCRIPTION:A continuation of last year’s popular program that looked at Chicago Art Deco buildings outside of downtown. \nThis program explores the city’s far north and northwest sides and provides an in-depth look at a variety of Art Deco structures\, including both residential and commercial buildings\, as well as a college\, a bridge\, and a mausoleum. Some are well-preserved city landmarks; some sport bold polychromatic terra cotta facades\, the likes of which are not seen downtown. But all of them have striking geometric ornamentation that reflected the optimism and prosperity of the Roaring 20s and that is still eye-catching today. \nProgram Presenter: Bill Coffin \nBill Coffin is a former appellate attorney and adjunct professor of legal research and writing\, Bill Coffin became a CAC docent in 2004. He is the tour director for the CAC‘s two Art Deco walking tours and has presented lectures about Art Deco at the CAC and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute\, a program of Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies. He enjoys sharing photos of Art Deco buildings with friends from his travels to cities big and small all across the country.

SUMMARY:Reimagining South Asian Womanhood: A Review of The Paglees: Between Reason and Madness
DESCRIPTION:The SAI team would like to thank Mrittika Ghosh who writes for Sixty Inches from Center\, for her excellent review of our current exhibition of works by a collective of artists who\, to quote Ghosh “reclaim a derogatory epithet as a source of power….Named for reclaiming the space of madness\, The Paglees imagine a selfhood outside patriarchal bounds of what is ‘reasonable’\,” \nThe Paglees is an exhibition that should not be missed. It redefines the idea of eccentricity and juxtaposes the lives of several women who have been affected by the labels that patriarchy uses for them.

SUMMARY:Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chicago’s Loop is an inflection point\, emerging from the pandemic on shaky footing but also with abundant opportunity to transition to something more vibrant\, resilient\, and livable. Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns holds our central business district up to the light\, exploring ways to keep our economic engine humming while diversifying uses and making the Loop more welcoming for everyone. \nThe exhibition frames Chicago’s Loop as a “lab” for examining the shared challenges American downtowns face today. It prompts visitors’ reflection on their own experiences and aspirations and ventures design and policy solutions for reshaping downtowns and our relationship to them. The show espouses the belief that Chicagoans can continue to meet our challenges with vision and resolve\, while also drawing inspiration from more than a century of central area planning and a modern-day exchange of ideas with peer cities. \nLoop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns\, presents a range of projects\, initiatives\, and provocative design ideas centered around four themes: \n\nRESIDE: Where and why are people living downtown?\nRENEW: Can we repurpose existing buildings for long-term public or private gain?\nRECONNECT: Can city dwellers safely and comfortably traverse downtown\, and access its amenities and services?\nREWILD: How are we incorporating green spaces and accommodating nature?\n\nEach theme is developed through a look at case study plans/projects by leading designers\, architects\, and developers. In addition\, a corresponding set of “architectural follies-in-the-round” at the heart of the gallery offers interactive entrypoints for visitors\, inviting engagement with the themes and ideas in unique ways. Further personalizing the content\, vignettes of “downtown denizens” (e.g. residents\, shop owners\, cyclists\, students) feature their individual experiences and hopes for the downtown area. \nTo further drive home the importance of participatory design and planning\, the exhibit features various public engagement strategies and activities\, including interactive elements like an entryway video produced by local podcasters\, 77 Flavors of Chicago\, and a “ballot box” where visitors can write and submit feedback on downtown design issues. \nPhoto of Marina Towers taken by Jason Peterson \nLAB EXPLORER KITS FOR THE FAMILY\nDid you know that the Chicago Loop can be used as a laboratory to learn new things about how we live and play? Stop by the CAC Box Office during the run of this exhibition\, and pick up a Lab Explorer Kit! Contents are designed to engage youth ages 6 to 12.
