DESCRIPTION:The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is excited to announce our new collaborative exhibition\, Arte de La Borinqueña\, by Creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, on display from March 2 – October 26\, 2024. \nThe public opening will be on March 2\, 2024\, from 10 am – 2 pm and will include a “Meet and Greet” with the award-winning graphic novelist and creator of the superhero La Borinqueña\, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\, from 10:30 am – 1 pm. \nThrough the serialized comic medium\, Miranda-Rodriguez has effectively emphasized the significance of narrating Puerto Rico’s history\, addressing contemporary social and environmental issues\, and celebrating the diverse Puerto Rican diaspora. La Borinqueña was launched in 2016 under Miranda-Rodriguez’s studio\, Somos Arte\, where he serves as Creative Director and is recognized for his philanthropic contributions. The story emerged during a critical period for the Puerto Rican people\, marked by an economic crisis and natural disasters in the Caribbean. La Borinqueña has transcended fiction\, evolving into a philanthropic superhero movement with a collection of graphic novels\, a special benefit anthology with DC Comics titled Ricanstruction\, and noteworthy partnerships with NRDC\, Chocolate Cortés\, and others.

DESCRIPTION:“Lay of(f) the Land: Nordic Narratives” will open on Friday\, April 5 at 6 p.m. with\nartists Dragos Alexandrescu\, Linnéa Therese Dimitriou\, Heidi-Anett Haugen\, Hanna\nKanto\, Lotta Lampa\, Patricia Rodas\, Anastasia Savinova\, and Madelaine Sillfors.\nProfoundly influenced by Nordic culture\, landscape\, and even weather\, the Art\nAlliance of the Arctic South (A-A-A-S) consists of eight artists whose work spans\nmedium and scale—from intricate collages and life-size sculptural installations to\nevocative video pieces and design objects. Their synergy stems from a shared ethos: a\ndeep-rooted connection to nature\, and a place-specific gaze upon environmental and\ncultural discourses. With this comes an unraveling of identity—both personal and\ncollective. The vast\, almost otherworldly Nordic landscapes serve as both muse and\nnarrative\, embodying themes of colonization (literal and figurative\,) ecological\ndevastation\, and the continual process of mourning and healing. \nFrom their unique vantage points in peripheral locations\, far removed from traditional\nart centers\, the artists offer a distinct and intimate perspective\, shedding light on\nworldwide socio-economic dilemmas and the imminent climate crisis. A heavy\nphysical presence permeates their work\, reflecting both past and present\, tradition and\ncontemporaneity. Vulnerability and empathy underscore their narratives\, prompting\ndeeper existential introspection as they urge viewers to ponder art’s pivotal role amidst\nglobal shifts\, raising imperative questions about our shared future.\nIn essence\, the A-A-A-S encapsulates a delicate balance between the old and the new\,\nthe local and the global. Introducing Northern Scandinavia’s next-wave artists to the\nUnited States\, this group exhibition is set to challenge\, provoke\, and inspire\,\nprompting us all to consider our collective path and the pressing need for change.\nUltimately\, it urges a look inward—to the roots and to the self.\nThe Swedish American Museum has shared art\, culture\, and history from throughout\nthe world and this next Main Gallery exhibit opening provides visitors with an\nopportunity to meet the artists behind the pieces on display. DESCRIPTION:Chicago’s Loop is an inflection point\, emerging from the pandemic on shaky footing but also with abundant opportunity to transition to something more vibrant\, resilient\, and livable. Loop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns holds our central business district up to the light\, exploring ways to keep our economic engine humming while diversifying uses and making the Loop more welcoming for everyone. \nThe exhibition frames Chicago’s Loop as a “lab” for examining the shared challenges American downtowns face today. It prompts visitors’ reflection on their own experiences and aspirations and ventures design and policy solutions for reshaping downtowns and our relationship to them. The show espouses the belief that Chicagoans can continue to meet our challenges with vision and resolve\, while also drawing inspiration from more than a century of central area planning and a modern-day exchange of ideas with peer cities. \nLoop as Lab: Reshaping Downtowns\, presents a range of projects\, initiatives\, and provocative design ideas centered around four themes: \n\nRESIDE: Where and why are people living downtown?\nRENEW: Can we repurpose existing buildings for long-term public or private gain?\nRECONNECT: Can city dwellers safely and comfortably traverse downtown\, and access its amenities and services?\nREWILD: How are we incorporating green spaces and accommodating nature?\n\nEach theme is developed through a look at case study plans/projects by leading designers\, architects\, and developers. In addition\, a corresponding set of “architectural follies-in-the-round” at the heart of the gallery offers interactive entrypoints for visitors\, inviting engagement with the themes and ideas in unique ways. SUMMARY:Building a Relevant Historic Preservation Movement with Bonnie McDonald
DESCRIPTION:Kick off Preservation Month at the CAC with Landmarks Illinois President and CEO Bonnie McDonald! This program will explore the future of architectural preservation with her new book\, “The Relevancy Guidebook\,” unveiled in November 2023.\n\n\n\nAt its 50th anniversary\, Landmarks Illinois embarked on an effort to explore how to move preservation forward over the next 50 years\, culminating in its guiding principles. What the organization found is that preservationists across the nation are deeply questioning the practices and movement’s future. Landmarks Illinois president & CEO Bonnie McDonald was awarded a 2020 James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation Mid-Career Fellowship to help bring the field’s challenges\, and solutions\, to the forefront through the Relevancy Project. Between 2019-2021\, she spoke to 130 individuals\, both within and outside of the preservation field\, to explore these questions and bring forward crowdsourced wisdom illuminating how change is possible. The project evolved into a forward-looking effort to catalogue preservation’s issues\, make the case for its opportunities\, highlight resources and instigate collective action toward change that will build a more relevant and just movement. Join us as McDonald explores her findings catalogued in her book\, “The Relevancy Guidebook: How We Can Transform the Future of Preservation\,” published by Landmarks Illinois in November 2023. Read her January 2023 Next City Op Ed and guidebook Executive Summary for a primer on the Relevancy Project’s outcomes.\n\n\nSpeaker: Bonnie McDonald\, President & CEO of Landmark Illinois\nOver her 11-year tenure as President & CEO\, Bonnie McDonald has led Landmarks Illinois to become a statewide and national voice for relevant change at this inflection point for the preservation movement. Bonnie’s transformative leadership has led Landmarks Illinois to focus on people and their vital connection to place\, and to develop collaborative solutions addressing community concerns like climate change\, affordable housing and lack of access to capital. Her policy work to incent preservation has led to over $6B in investment in existing buildings and over 30K new jobs created. The James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation awarded Bonnie its 2020 Mid-Career Fellowship to inform\, inspire and support preservation’s evolution through The Relevancy Project\, a four-year interview and research initiative culminating in the recently published Relevancy Guidebook. During this time\, she has also maintained her commitment to serving as volunteer and mentor in the preservation community. From 2018-2021\, Bonnie chaired the board of the National Preservation Partners Network\, the national nonprofit representing preservation organizations\, and she currently serves as an appointee to the State of Illinois Route 66 Centennial Commission. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot appointed Bonnie co-chair of the Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee in 2020 to help lead a truth and racial reckoning process around the city’s problematic artworks. Bonnie and Landmarks Illinois proudly received the AIA Chicago Distinguished Service Award in December 2022. She holds a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell University.

SUMMARY:Calligraphy Workshop with Yuzhe Cao
DESCRIPTION:Chinese calligraphy is a traditional and ancient art form with a history that stretches back more than 3\,000 years. As a unique blend of writing\, painting\, and poetry\, it has been used throughout Chinese history and culture for a variety of purposes\, such as communication\, art\, and self-expression. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn about the history and ancient techniques of Chinese calligraphy\, and have the opportunity to create your own work of art. Our professional calligraphy instructor will introduce you to the different styles of calligraphy\, guiding you through the basics of brush and ink techniques. You will discover the symbolism and meaning behind Chinese characters\, and how calligraphy has been used throughout history. By the end of the workshop\, you will take home a unique piece of calligraphy\, now having a deeper understanding and appreciation for this timeless art form. \n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nYuzhe Cao is a graduate student in the University of Chicago’s Master of Arts Program in the Humanities\, studying pre-modern Chinese art history. He obtained his BA in Modern Chinese History at the Ohio State University. He has studied calligraphy for over 10 years. \n  \nCalligraphy History \nThe earliest examples of Chinese calligraphy date back to the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE)\, when characters were written on oracle bones for divination purposes. During the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BCE)\, calligraphy began to be used for other purposes as well\, including literature and art. Calligraphers during this time developed a variety of styles\, including the seal script and the clerical script. \nIn the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE)\, calligraphy became more standardized\, with the development of the regular script. This style of calligraphy was used for official documents and inscriptions\, and it was characterized by its even and balanced strokes. \nDuring the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE)\, calligraphy reached its peak as an art form\, with the development of the cursive script and the running script. These styles were more fluid and expressive than the regular script\, and they allowed calligraphers to express their personalities and emotions more freely. In the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE)\, calligraphy continued to evolve\, with the development of the semi-cursive script and the elegant and refined style known as the “scholarly style.” Calligraphers during this time focused on precision and subtlety\, and they often used calligraphy as a way to express their philosophical and literary ideas. \nDuring the Ming (1368-1644 CE) and Qing (1644-1912 CE) Dynasties\, calligraphy continued to be an important art form\, with many famous calligraphers creating works that are still admired today. In modern times\, calligraphy has continued to be an important part of Chinese culture\, with many people practicing it as a hobby or profession.
