NHM Virtual Book Club – The Birds
July 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
NHM Virtual Book Club is free to join and meets on the third Thursday of each month at 7pm CST
On July 15th we will be discussing The Birds by Aristophanes
Join us as we read Aristophanes’ famed comedy The Birds. First performed in 414 B.C.E., The Birds tells the story of Pisthetaerus, an Athenian, who convinces the birds they should reclaim their cosmic position as the first gods by building a great city in the sky. Part political satire and part social parody, The Birds is a truly timeless look at the absurdity of humanity’s search for power and glory.
A free digital copy of The Birds is available through Project Gutenberg:

Our July Bookclub selection is in collaboration with Wrightwood 659 for their current exhibit, Yannis Tsarouchis: Dancing in Real Life. The exhibit is the first U.S. exhibition of Tsarouchis’ work and is on display at Wrightwood 659 until July 31st. Join us to learn more about the connection between Tsarouchis, widely regarded as one of the greatest Greek painters of the 20th Century, and The Birds from our colleges from Wrightwood 659
NHM Virtual Book Club is facilitated by our Resident Scholar Dr. Katherine Kelaidis & our Manager of Programs & Events Cairo Dye. Each month the NHM Book Club chooses a book that is either inspired by the Hellenic legacy or by a Greek American author (and sometimes both!). Then we gather to discuss the book on Zoom.
