Presentation of Giedrius Subačius’ Monograph on Simonas Daukantas

Prof. Giedrius Subacius will present his monograph “Simonas Daukantas Riga orthography (1827–1834)“. Simonas Daukantas, a prominent Lithuanian activist and historian, wrote the first history of Lithuania in Lithuanian while Polish was still the foremost spoken and written language in Lithuania. During this era, Lithuanian orthography, the elements of written language such as punctuation, emphasis and word breaks) was not standardized. After living in Vilnius, Daukantas resided in Riga from approximately 1823 – 1834. Giedrius Subačius holds the Endowed Chair in Lithuanian Studies, School of Literatures, Cultural Studies and Linguistics at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Prof. Subacius also is the senior editor of the scholarly journal, Archivum Lithuanicum.
