DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of our new Spotlight Series exhibition “What Color Am I” by Sarah Whyte. \nRSVP HERE \nDate: March 26\, 2023\nTime: 1-4pm\nVenue: Chinese American Museum of Chicago\, 4th Fl\nAddress: 238 W 23rd Street\, Chicago\, IL 60616 \nStatement About the Art \nWhere does the paradox of being called a China doll and then being told that color does not matter leave you? What Color Am I? Is a series of artworks that talks about the complications of racial understanding as a person of color raised by white parents. \nThrough captivating embroidered slurs on fake Chinese silk and breathtaking self-portraits that are obscured with layers of text\, imagery\, embroidery\, and gesso\, this visual story explores the struggles between the duality of racial identity and relationship. \nThe embroideries and paintings start separately but merge as a visual representation of both the artist’s Asian ethnicity and their white upbringing being a part of who they are. In the embroidery pieces when people see the shiny brocade-style fabric with dragons and phoenixes on it oftentimes they think that’s what Chinese silk is\, but the material Sarah is using is actually 100% polyester. Synthetic fibers like polyester melt whereas natural fibers like 100% silk burn. This detail reveal can be seen on the edges of most of the embroidery pieces. Sarah chose this material as a play on her labeled identity as a “fake Asian”. \nFor the paintings\, Sarah creates colorfully rendered self-portraits and then covers up most of the image in a gray-white gesso wash. She obscured the portraits with layers because so much of her own identity is obscured by layers of racial ambiguity. Then she hands embroidered poems she wrote in relation to the piece onto the painting. After the embroidery was finished she would cover up the words with a block of paint. Physically the words are there but unless you take a close look at the painting the words are easy to miss. It’s almost like she is highlighting and yet also erasing the embroidered words\, sharing and yet also not making it easy for the viewer to read. \nSo often the question of race in transracial adoption is the elephant in the room because remember it doesn’t matter what you look like you are my child. But Sarah believes it’s essential that we acknowledge the issue of racism and systematic oppression that coincides. Through her work\, Sarah poses the question of perception. Do you understand the material\, the body\, and the form as authentic or inauthentic? How do we label and choose what belongs and does not belong to these categories of race\, identity\, and community? What are the lines of the social construct that are flexible and fluid? After all\, what is and is not considered to be a part of these groupings can change depending on the narrator and the social climate we live in. Does it matter if you perceive yourself differently than the general public? \nWhat does it mean to be Asian? To be Chinese? To be “yellow”? To be “white”? To be American? Where do people draw the racial lines and how do they categorize race? \nSo\, tell me What Color Am I? and What Color Are You? \nArtist Bio \nSarah Whyte is an interdisciplinary fiber artist and painter whose work questions her identity. As a Chinese American\, woman adoptee who grew up in a white family Sarah’s identity is complicated. Through her experience with both transracial and transnational adoption\, She examines the hierarchy of race\, gender\, and culture within her artwork. \nSarah was born in China and lived in an orphanage at the beginning of her formative years. Sarah was then adopted and brought to the United States where she grew up in Virginia and Texas before moving to Chicago for school. She holds a BFA in Studio Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and is currently getting her MFA in Studio Arts at The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and is expected to graduate in 2024. \nRegister on Eventbrite

DESCRIPTION:About the Exhibit:\nThe Spotlight Series at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago is pleased to present UNITY\, Maggie Wong’s first solo exhibition in Chicago. \nThrough various manipulations of newsprint via sculptural and print interventions pulled from the artist’s collection of Unity Newspaper\, the show depicts a version of childcare that supported revolutionary action\, particularly the publishing of Unity by the League of Revolutionary Struggle\, a radical communist group that emerged in 1978 upon the merger between the August 29th Movement\, a Chicano revolutionary organization\, and I Wor Kuen\, an Asian American revolutionary organization\, both influenced by Mao and followed Marxist-Leninist thought. \nThis system is what raised the artist and countless other now-grown adults that now serves as a point of departure to feel through a movement as a mothering environment. \nAbout the Artist:\nMaggie Wong (b.1988\, Oakland\, CA) is a visual artist attuned to materiality and sculpture’s disciplinary capacity to shape social space. She creates multidisciplinary works that focus on care labor\, sentimentality\, and collectivity. As a teacher. Maggie is interested in the interplay between informal and experiential education amidst formal art ecologies. She holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). She is currently the Educator-in-Residence at the Luminary\, and lecturer at SAIC. Her work has been shown at Mana Contemporary Chicago\, Comfort Station\, Annas Projects\, take care (LA)\, Temple Contemporary\, YBCA\, and 99cent Plus\, and has been written about in ArtForum and Sixty Inches from Center. Her writing has been published by Yale University Press\, Viral Ecologies\, and the Journal of Art Practice.

Please join us on Saturday\, November 5\, from 3pm-6pm CT for the opening reception.\nIn a new body of work centered on an imperial robe on display in the museum\, Chinatown\, and the New York Times repeated coverage of COVID featuring Asian faces\, photographer Guanyu Xu challenges the viewer to reconsider the parallel instances of colonization\, objectification\, fetishization\, and racism in three temporalities. Guanyu Xu: to be seen will run from November 5 through December 17.\nThe Spotlight Series is a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago.\n\nAbout the artist:\n徐冠宇 Guanyu Xu (b.1993 Beijing) is an artist currently based in Chicago and a lecturer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Influenced by the production of ideology in American visual culture and a conservative familial upbringing in China\, Xu’s practice extends from examining the production of power in photography to the question of personal freedom and its relationship to political regimes. He negotiates this from the perspective as a Chinese gay man. In his work\, Xu migrates between mediums like photography\, new media\, and installation. These movements operate similarly to his displaced and fractured identity.\nHe is the recipient of the Chicago DCASE Artist Grant (2022)\, CENTER Development Grant (2021)\, Hyéres International Festival Prize (2020)\, PHOTOFAIRS Shanghai Exposure Award (2020)\, Philadelphia Photo Arts Center Annual Competition (2019)\, Lensculture Emerging Talent Award (2019)\, and Kodak Film Photo Award (2019). He has received artist residencies including ACRE (Chicago\, IL)\, Light Work (Syracuse\, NY)\, and Latitude (Chicago\, IL). His works have been exhibited and screened internationally including the Aperture Foundation\, New York; International Center of Photography\, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Chicago; New Orlean Museum of Art\, New Orleans; Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston; Wesleyan University\, Middletown; Fotomuseum Winterthur\, Switzerland; Mint Museum\, Charlotte; 36th Kasseler Dokfest\, Germany\, and others. SUMMARY:Journey Chicago: Stories that Travel: Mythology\, Folklore\, and Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Journey Chicago\, the Chicago Cultural Alliance’s annual citywide festival of cross-cultural events. \nA panel discussion focusing on the varied relationships different Diaspora communities have with the mythological & folklore stories of their culture of origin. We are specifically interested in interrogating the ways in which different communities invest in or distance themselves from their ancient/classical mythology and folklore in the American Diaspora\, and how those relationships have shifted over time. We will examine this question through both an academic & artistic lens. \n  \nOur Panel: \nAnna Cai (they/them) is a queer Indonesian Chinese American community-driven artist currently living in Chicago who explores the futurities of Asian diasporic identity through relationships\, textiles\, costume\, performance\, film\, graphic design\, and print media. At the center of their creative and social practice is a desire to steer their community into a future that embraces a transformation of fiction and reality and rejects outdated constructs of nation\, gender and capital. \nCai has received multiple awards for their work in art\, design\, and community engagement. They were a finalist in Lesotho Fashion Week of 2018 and their work in film has been selected for Lesotho Film Festival between the years of 2018-2020. Most recently they were a recipient of the 2020 New Artist Society scholarship\, the 2022 Caxton Book Club grant\, and Graphic Design USA’s 2022 Students to Watch Award. They are also a member of the 2022 Spring Tanda Artist Research fellowship program hosted by Chuquimarca Art Library in Chicago\, Illinois. They have collaborated with several organizations internationally including the Morija Arts Centre\, The Hub in Morija\, Lesotho Girls in Tech\, the Public Housing Authority of Residents in Charlottesville\, the White House Kitchen Garden initiative\, and the Chinese Historical Society of Memphis & the Midsouth. They have initiated numerous independent publications and initiatives such as The Morija Makers (2018)\, Stories from Westhaven (2016)\, and the upcoming Chicago-based independent magazine Tongues (2022). \nThey received a BS in Architecture from the University of Virginia. In 2016 to 2018 they served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho. Upon leaving the organization\, Cai apprenticed with a local textile artist and began exploring identity expression through wearable sculpture and performance. During this time\, they gained invaluable experience on how to build trusting relationships and engage in art-making that embraces an art practice at the intersection of community building\, education\, and design. They recently completed an MFA Visual Communication program at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago where they were immersed in rituals that combine mythology\, pleasure\, play\, historical fabulation\, and the reclaiming of archives. \nDr. Katherine Kelaidis is the Director of Research and Content at the National Hellenic Museum. She has held research appointments at the American University in Cairo\, Oxford University\, and the Free University Berlin. She is also a Senior Editor at Religion Dispatches. Dr. Kelaidis holds a B.A. in Classical Languages from the University of California\, Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of London. \n  \nCori Nakamura Lin a midwest-based Japanese//Taiwanese-American illustrator and designer specializing in movement art and culture-centered storytelling. By visualizing narratives and illuminating concepts\, Cori makes art that fuels action. DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to host the last of two free public programs inspired by the Spotlight Series exhibition Yuge Zhou: Moon Drawings. The program is a sound performance by Kikù Hibino and Chien-An Yuan on Saturday\, October 15\, from 1pm-2:30pm CT\, a day before the closing of the exhibition. \nRegister here \nAbout the artists:\nJapanese-born Chicago-based sound artist Kikù Hibino produces electronic music that focuses on unusual rhythmic structure and melodies that are inspired by optical illusion and moiré patterns. From chamber music for media productions to digital micro sound for art installations\, he has collaborated internationally with a wide variety of artists and scholars. He’s a 2017 Individual Artist Grant recipient from Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs\, 2021 Outer Ear Artist in Residency at Experimental Sound Studio\, and 2021 nominee for Best Asian Entertainer at Chicago Music Awards. In 2021\, Kikù and his creative partner Gregory Bae launched S/N\, an electronic music concert series. \nChien-An Yuan is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and educator based in Ann Arbor\, MI. Yuan runs 1473\, a record label specializing in improvisation\, electronics\, and collaboration. He is also a founding member of IS/LAND\, a performance collaborative comprised of AAPI movers\, artists\, and collaborators. His work has been featured in The New Yorker\, Chicago Tribune\, ArtSlant\, Huffington Post\, WNYC and many other arts and cultural platforms. \nChien-An Yuan and Kikù Hibino have performed and shown in cultural institutions widely. \nYuge Zhou is a Chinese born\, Chicago-based artist whose videos and installations addresses connections\, isolation and longing across natural and urban spaces as sites of shared dreams. Zhou has exhibited nationally and internationally in prominent art and public venues. Her new dance film “Love Letters” is currently shown as part of Art on theMART’s fall program\, a nightly public art projection onto the facade of the Merchandise Mart\, Chicago. Recent awards include Juried Award in the installation category at ArtPrize 2021\, Artist Fellowship Award in Media Arts from the Illinois Arts Council and Honorary Mention in the 2020 Prix Ars Electronica in Linz\, Austria.

DESCRIPTION:Do you want to tell stories to connect with people emotionally and to create intimate communities with others? Do you want to tell stories that reflect upon urgent social concerns of our time? \nThere are two parts to this workshop/circle. During the first part of the session\, we will discuss central tenets of this art form and explore some general principles. Participants will practice sharing personal stories during the second part of the session. \nInstructor bio\nAda Cheng is a professor-turned-storyteller\, solo performer\, and storytelling show producer. She is the producer and the host of five storytelling shows\, including Pour One Out\, Am I Man Enough?\, Talk Stories: An Asian American/Asian Diaspora Storytelling Show\, Speaking Truths Series\, and This Is America: Truths through My Body. She creates platforms for people to tell difficult and vulnerable stories as well as spaces for people and communities who may not have opportunities otherwise. DESCRIPTION:The Chinese American Museum of Chicago (CAMOC) is excited to host two free public programs for the Spotlight Series exhibition Yuge Zhou: Moon Drawings. The first of these programs is a poetry session in collaboration with the Chicago Poetry Center on Saturday\, September 10\, from 12pm-1pm CT\, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn (Moon) Festival. The poetry session will start with a poetry performance by Lisa Low followed by an ekphrastic workshop with participants create and share their poems in response to the themes of the exhibition.\n\nRegister here\n\nAbout the poet\nLisa Low is a poet and essayist from Maryland. Her poems appear or are forthcoming in Copper Nickel\, Ecotone\, The Massachusetts Review\, Poetry\, The Southern Review\, and elsewhere\, and her essay “How to Apologize” won the 2020 Gulf Coast Nonfiction Prize. She earned an MFA from Indiana University and a PhD in creative writing and literature from the University of Cincinnati\, where she served as associate editor at The Cincinnati Review. Her debut chapbook\, Crown for the Girl Inside\, won the 2020 Vinyl 45 Chapbook Contest and is forthcoming from YesYes Books.

Collateral programs of the exhibition include a poetry session in collaboration with the Chicago Poetry Center and a sound performance by local sound artists Kikù Hibino and Chien-An Yuan. \nRSVP for the opening reception here \nIn Yuge Zhou’s ongoing video series Moon Drawings\, we watch her dragging a suitcase in concentric circles through the winter snow and a summer beach under the moonlight in Chicago. The videos were created during the global pandemic travel bans\, and inspired by a Han Dynasty legend about missing loved ones in a faraway land. Much of Zhou’s recent work centers around the great physical and emotional distance between China and America\, two lands she calls home. \nThe Spotlight Series is a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. This exhibition will run from July 16 through August 28. \nRSVP here. \nThe Spotlight Series is a new initiative to showcase recent and past work by emerging and mid-career artists of Chinese descent locally. Curated by Larry Lee (Molar Productions)\, the project aims to introduce\, promote and celebrate the divergent artistic visions and experiences of being Chinese in America looking at and reflecting upon our relationship to contemporary visual culture to a wider audience within our community and Chicago. \nAbout the artist:\nAs a child of a Chinese immigrant family in North America\, Priscilla was perpetually reminded to be practical about her future. But after over a decade as a health care professional\, she began to feel dissatisfied with the direction of her life. Priscilla turned to creative outlets to find a voice and to explore her identity as a woman of color. She was drawn to glass because it is inherently paradoxical\, constantly in a state of fragility and permanency. She returned to school in 2015 to pursue a Bachelor’s in Craft and Design from Sheridan College and completed her Master of Fine Arts at Illinois State University in 2022. \nPriscilla uses glass and other media to create work as an act of remembrance of the collective intersectional adversity minority women continue to face. Her work highlights the astute way in which our inherent patriarchal society has affected the Asian female position within its structure and how it maintains control through cultural and social expectations and normalized gender roles. Priscilla employs visual language containing artifacts of patriarchy from her childhood that have since become pop culture icons. The symbolism of these images is far removed from their original medium and their patriarchal foundation\, making them easy to manipulate and go undetected while subtly reinforcing social norms and binary systems. Ultimately\, Priscilla views her work as a nostalgic and whimsical\, yet mischievous way of documenting where women\, particularly immigrant women\, are placed within a societally prescribed racial framework. She hopes to initiate discourse about this reality to validate our collective experiences and raise awareness to the continual existence of these issues.

Low\, as he returns to CAMOC to discuss his new book published this year\, The All-American Crew. Register here.\n\nAbout the book\nOn January 23\, 1943\, a B-24 Liberator and its crew of ten men disappeared without a trace in New Guinea\, leaving ten families wounded permanently and without closure. Now\, after almost 80 years of silence\, using long-forgotten letters and dusty photographs from another era\, the lives and loves of these ten men are brought to life on the pages of The All-American Crew.\n\nThey did not intend to be heroes and would not welcome the description. They were the sons of farmers\, oil company engineers\, cotton brokers\, garment industry workers\, and Chinese laundrymen. Many were descendants of the oldest colonial families in America\, who set foot on the soil of Colonial Virginia in the 1600s. Others came from families that migrated to America in the 1800s from Ireland\, Scotland\, Germany\, Austria\, and China during the tremendous immigration wave that built America. In truth\, this group of young men could only have been formed in America. They were the best that America had to offer. Each was willing to sacrifice everything for the country he loved\, driven by a patriotic fervor that was only matched by his love of flying.\n\nThe All-American Crew is based upon a true story. Stanley’s transformation from a Chinese American boy\, not yet old enough to vote or drink beer\, into a B-24 Liberator nose gunner is set against the lives of the other nine American men\, who are his crew members. Along the way\, Stanley experiences loneliness\, racism\, his first beer\, first romance\, and the horrors of war\, themes that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago.

A recent graduate of Columbia College Chicago with a BFA in Fine Arts\, their work reroutes spatial and interrelational dynamic\, considering the roles and circumstances we have come to believe are inherent to life itself.\n\nNicole explores notions of inclusion and exclusion in their experience of diaspora as a second-generation Chinese-American through the manipulation of the museum space itself\, intentionally obstructing the audience’s ability to enter the gallery space and (experience the text within it) to mimic a sense of displacement in fully identifying with\, and belonging to\, a single culture. This projection of self-assessment is intended to prompt said audience to reconsider their relationship with Chinese heritage in Chicago and throughout the United States\, as one that is too often overlooked\, overgeneralized\, and pushed to the peripherals of our visions. \n\nI bet you can tell just by looking at the back of my head.

Fighting the inhumanity and discrimination of the West\, they work perilously to drive in the Golden Spike in 1869 and become inspirational builders of the first Transcontinental Railroad and this country.\n\nFrom the author\n“It’s the story of two Cantonese brothers who along with tens of thousands of men from southern China conquer the back-breaking construction of the Transcontinental Railroad in the 1860s\, the tunnels through the granite of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. No first-hand account describing the life of a Chinese railroad worker of the Transcontinental Railroad has ever been found. Historians have searched this nation and the winding road back to China\, to the roots of these forgotten\, invisible men. Many were literate\, yet not a scrap of their writing remains. Based on the memoirs of Jewish refugee musicians who escaped Nazi Germany and found refuge in Shanghai in the 1930s and ’40s\, this musical shares how music helped them to survive the war and how they taught classical music to the local Chinese. The music composed by Xiang is inspired by Jewish and Chinese traditional music\, European classical music\, and musical theatre. \nThis discussion is hosted by the Chinese American Museum of Chicago with the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC) and the American Jewish Committee (AJC). \nRegister here \nAbout Xiang Gao\nNamed as Musical America’s Top 30 Professionals of the Year in 2021\, Xiang is one of the world’s most successful presenters\, producers\, composers\, and pedagogues. Now a talking fish is magical enough — but when Jin-Yu goes missing\, Ye-Xian learns from a kindly Old Sage what to do and to provide for herself — especially when she’s prevented from going to the Festival by Stepmother. \nSee what happens when Ye-Xian is recognized at the Festival.
