SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Kindertransport - Rescuing Children on the Brink of War
DESCRIPTION:Kindertransport – Rescuing Children on the Brink of War is a poignant exhibition that outlines the remarkable rescue mission that brought thousands of unaccompanied children from Nazi Europe to the United Kingdom. The exhibition’s thoughtful and artistic design invites visitors to reflect on the heart-wrenching decisions parents made in sending their children away for a chance at a better future. Through personal artifacts\, stories\, and firsthand testimony\, those who lived through the “Kindertransport” program share its story. \nIn honor of the exhibition’s opening\, join Dr. Phyllis Lassner\, Professor Emerita in The Crown Center for Jewish and Israel Studies at Northwestern University and Member of the Museum’s Exhibitions & Collections Committee\, as she moderates a discussion with Ilona Moradof\, Curator of Kindertransport: Rescuing Children on the Brink of War and Associate Director of Administration and Special Projects · Yeshiva University Museum\, and Melissa Hacker\, Director of documentary film My Knees Were Jumping: Remembering The Kindertransports\, President of the Kindertransport Association\, and second-generation descendant of “Kindertransport” Survivor Ruth Morley (neé Birnholz). HM Consul General Alan Gogbashian\, British Consulate-General in Chicago\, will also deliver remarks at the program.

SUMMARY:On-Site Commemoration: Echoes of Remembrance - The Holocaust in Thessaloniki
DESCRIPTION:From the city’s ancient founding until the Second World War\, Thessaloniki (Salonika)\, Greece was home to a large and thriving Jewish community. In 1943\, from March to August\, approximately 46\,000 Jews were displaced from Thessaloniki by the Nazis and their collaborators and deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau\, where 96% of them were murdered. A community that had settled in Thessaloniki before the Christian era was decimated during the Holocaust. \nJoin Leon Saltiel\, Director of Diplomacy\, UNESCO\, Coordinator on Countering Antisemitism for the World Jewish Congress\, and member of the Greek delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)\, as he explores through historical accounts\, personal narratives\, and archival footage\, the challenges faced by the Greek Jewish population during the Holocaust\, and their enduring strength in the face of adversity still today.

SUMMARY:On-Site Film Screening: “Refugee Lullaby”
DESCRIPTION:What motivates a man to leave his home\, wife\, and children on a cold night to help refugees marching towards the border of his country? \nIn the seemingly peaceful and picturesque Austrian countryside resides Hans Breuer\, Austria’s last wandering shepherd. Just hours outside of Breuer’s modest rural cabin\, the tranquility is disrupted as thousands of refugees cross his country’s borders seeking asylum. He cannot sleep at night knowing that there are refugees who need help\, only a two-hour drive from his home. \nUsing a private Facebook group\, Breuer volunteers his time to help the refugees with everything from collecting food and water to driving them safely across the Hungarian border. He even sings them Yiddish lullabies from his childhood. Breuer’s acts of kindness are not motivated out of charity\, but solidarity: his father\, a Jewish dissident\, escaped Austria before World War II. \nRefugee Lullaby follows Breuer as he dedicates his life to helping refugees throughout Europe\, and how other ordinary citizens step up to assist refugees. At its heart\, it is a film about human compassion\, its origins\, and its boundaries\, connecting Jewish history with current reality.

SUMMARY:On-Site Commemoration: Light Among Darkness: 80th Anniversary of the Rescue of Bulgarian Jews
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, none of Bulgaria’s approximately 50\,000 Jews were deported to Nazi death camps. This incredible feat was possible thanks to Bulgarian politicians\, administrators\, officers\, clergymen\, intellectuals\, and ordinary citizens who refused to yield to Nazi pressure. The Bulgarian state also facilitated transportation for Jewish refugees from Central and Eastern Europe\, and Bulgaria’s embassies and consulates issued around 15\,000 transit visas to Jews fleeing other countries. \nLearn more about the extraordinary acts by Bulgarians to save their Jewish community during World War II with Professor Michael Bar-Zohar\, winner of the Skolov Award for his achievements as a journalist and author of several books\, including biographies recounting the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from Nazis in World War II; and Svetoslav Stankov\, Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Chicago. Their conversation will reflect upon the significance of the 80th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews and how we must continue to resist antisemitism and hatred today. \nReservations required. Free to the public.

SUMMARY:Musical Performance: A Night at the Savoy: An Enduring Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Believed to be inspired by the earlier Jewish Vacation Guide\, which catalogued hotels that welcomed Jewish travelers\, The Green Book was cherished by Black travelers and touring Black musicians: it was a guide to vibrant neighborhoods like New York City’s Harlem\, Chicago’s Bronzeville\, and Washington\, D.C.’s U Street. \nAs the Black middle class emerged across America in the early 1920s\, widespread automobile ownership opened new opportunities to travel – but Jim Crow laws still posed a threat. Life in this era shifted significantly\, forging a system of laws and customs that segregated public spaces and enforced racial inequality. Navigating the injustices of racial segregation was difficult and\, at times\, dangerous – even for renowned Black artists. Touring was regarded as the hardest part of the job. \nCelebrate the works of Black musicians with a Green Book era-inspired performance by Chicago’s Emmy-Award winning trumpeter\, composer\, and educator Orbert Davis and his Jazz Quartet. Sip on a free signature cocktail and dance the night away to classics of the era at this party celebrating the impact and history of The Green Book on American music. \nReservations required. Free to the public.
