SUMMARY:On-Site Commemoration: Light Among Darkness: 80th Anniversary of the Rescue of Bulgarian Jews
DESCRIPTION:During World War II\, none of Bulgaria’s approximately 50\,000 Jews were deported to Nazi death camps. This incredible feat was possible thanks to Bulgarian politicians\, administrators\, officers\, clergymen\, intellectuals\, and ordinary citizens who refused to yield to Nazi pressure. The Bulgarian state also facilitated transportation for Jewish refugees from Central and Eastern Europe\, and Bulgaria’s embassies and consulates issued around 15\,000 transit visas to Jews fleeing other countries. \nLearn more about the extraordinary acts by Bulgarians to save their Jewish community during World War II with Professor Michael Bar-Zohar\, winner of the Skolov Award for his achievements as a journalist and author of several books\, including biographies recounting the rescue of Bulgarian Jews from Nazis in World War II; and Svetoslav Stankov\, Consul General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Chicago. Their conversation will reflect upon the significance of the 80th anniversary of the rescue of Bulgarian Jews and how we must continue to resist antisemitism and hatred today. \nReservations required. Free to the public.

SUMMARY:Musical Performance: A Night at the Savoy: An Enduring Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Believed to be inspired by the earlier Jewish Vacation Guide\, which catalogued hotels that welcomed Jewish travelers\, The Green Book was cherished by Black travelers and touring Black musicians: it was a guide to vibrant neighborhoods like New York City’s Harlem\, Chicago’s Bronzeville\, and Washington\, D.C.’s U Street. \nAs the Black middle class emerged across America in the early 1920s\, widespread automobile ownership opened new opportunities to travel – but Jim Crow laws still posed a threat. Life in this era shifted significantly\, forging a system of laws and customs that segregated public spaces and enforced racial inequality. Navigating the injustices of racial segregation was difficult and\, at times\, dangerous – even for renowned Black artists. Touring was regarded as the hardest part of the job. \nCelebrate the works of Black musicians with a Green Book era-inspired performance by Chicago’s Emmy-Award winning trumpeter\, composer\, and educator Orbert Davis and his Jazz Quartet. Sip on a free signature cocktail and dance the night away to classics of the era at this party celebrating the impact and history of The Green Book on American music. \nReservations required. Free to the public.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: “Baltic Truth”
DESCRIPTION:Narrated by award-winning Israeli performer and son of Holocaust Survivors Dudu Fisher\, Baltic Truth exposes key facts of the first months of World War II in the Baltic States and how almost the entire Jewish community of the occupied Baltic Nations was eliminated via “Holocaust by Bullets” with assistance from the local population. \nUltimately\, Baltic Truth reveals how some national heroes involved in Holocaust crimes are still being celebrated by their fellow countrymen to this very day and reflects upon the need for accuracy in Holocaust history. \nThe film screening will be followed by remarks from Eugene J. Levin\, Director\, and a discussion with Dudu Fisher\, renowned artist of film\, television\, stage\, and song; and Kelley Szany\, Senior Vice President of Education & Exhibitions at Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. The conversation will be moderated by Richard Salomon\, Vice President of Illinois Holocaust Museum Board of Directors.

SUMMARY:The Negro Motorist Green Book
DESCRIPTION:“The Negro Motorist Green Book” guided Black Americans to thousands of businesses for over thirty years. When the first “Green Book” was published\, the American road was a metaphor for freedom: freedom to change your present situation\, determine your destiny\, and travel. Yet\, in 20th-century America\, this same road was a dangerous place for Black travelers. The land was divided by segregation — through policy and through custom. For Black people\, the prejudice was severe: a systematic effort to deny their basic human rights. In an era of Jim Crow laws and “sundown towns\,” communities that explicitly prohibited Black travelers from staying overnight\, the “Green Book” offered critical\, life-saving information and sanctuary. \nNow\, through The Negro Motorist Green Book\, visitors will explore film\, photographs\, interactives\, and oral histories from travelers and “Green Book” business owners; compare “Green Book” sites then and now; and appreciate historical objects from the Smithsonian and from a variety of “Green Book” sites. The exhibition includes artifacts from business signs and postcards to historic footage\, images\, and firsthand accounts that illustrate not just the apprehension felt by Black travelers\, but also the resilience\, innovation\, and elegance of people choosing to live a full American existence. \nDeveloped by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) in collaboration with award-winning author\, photographer\, and cultural documentarian\, Candacy Taylor\, Green Book offers an immersive look at the historic reality of travel for Black Americans and how the guide served as an indispensable resource for the rise of the Black leisure class in the United States. The exhibition highlights destinations created by Black Americans and strategies that affirmed their humanity\, their worth\, their light\, and their lives – and how it was done with ingenuity\, community\, and with help from Victor Green and his travel guide: “The Negro Motorist Green Book.”

SUMMARY:NORTH AMERICAN FILM PREMIERE: “THE DEVIL’S CONFESSION: THE LOST EICHMANN TAPES”
DESCRIPTION:Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center\, in association with MGM Television\, SIPUR\, Toluca Pictures\, Alice Communications\, and Menemsha Films\, will host the North American premiere of The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes on January 19\, 2023. \nThe Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes unearths secret recordings of Adolf Eichmann\, one of the chief architects of the Holocaust’s Final Solution\, which definitively shows his active involvement in the planning and implementation of one of the greatest atrocities in world history. Recorded in Buenos Aires in 1957 by Dutch journalist and former SS-Officer Willem Sassen with the intention to prove the Holocaust did not happen as portrayed and without Hitler’s knowledge\, these tapes show the opposite and expose Eichmann\, in his own voice\, stunningly contradicting claims he made during his eventual trial for crimes against humanity\, war crimes\, and crimes against the Jewish people. The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes sheds light on the hidden forces that concealed the recordings\, altering the arc of history as we have understood it for more than 70 years\, and provides irrefutable proof against Holocaust denial and the pernicious antisemitic hatred from which it springs. \nOriginally premiered as the opening film of the renowned documentary festival DOCAVIV and released as a documentary series on Israel’s tv-network KAN 11\, MGM Television\, SIPUR\, Toluca Pictures\, Alice Communications\, Menemsha Films\, and Illinois Holocaust Museum will bring a feature-length version of The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes to North America\, beginning with its January 19 premiere in Skokie. The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes has already received worldwide attention\, with prominent coverage in The New York Times\, CNN\, NPR\, L’Express\, and The Times of Israel. \nThe film premiere will be followed by a distinguished panel discussion with Director Yariv Mozer\, Executive Producer Emilio Schenker\, and world-renowned Holocaust experts Dr. Michael Berenbaum\, American Jewish University\, and Dr. Peter Hayes\, Professor\, Northwestern University. The discussion will be moderated by Richard Salomon\, Vice President\, Museum Board of Directors. Opening remarks will be given by Steve Stark\, Chairman of Toluca Pictures\, former President of MGM Television\, and Executive Producer of the film. \nThe film is produced by MGM Television\, SIPUR\, Toluca Pictures\, and Alice Communications in association with KAN11\, with the support of The Gesher Multicultural Film Fund\, The New Fund for Cinema & TV\, KADAR Foundation for Culture\, Arts and Science\, Mifal Haipas Council for Arts&Science\, Maimonides Fund\, Avi Chai Foundation\, Jewish Federation of Canada UIA\, Azrieli Foundation\, Ministry of Culture & Sports\, The Israeli Film Council\, and is distributed by Menemsha Films. SUMMARY:ONLINE LUNCH & LEARN: “THE ESCAPE ARTIST”
DESCRIPTION:In April 1944\, Rudolf Vrba became the first Jew ever known to engineer his own escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world\, and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them at the end of the railway line. \nAgainst all odds\, he and his fellow escapee Fred Wetzler climbed mountains\, crossed rivers\, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen: a forensically detailed report that would eventually reach Franklin Roosevelt\, Winston Churchill\, and the Pope. In the end\, Vrba helped save 200\,000 lives\, but he never stopped believing it could have been so many more. \nDon’t miss our program with award-winning journalist and author Jonathan Freedland as he presents his new book about Rudolf Vrba’s incredible story\, The Escape Artist: The Man Who Broke Out of Auschwitz to Warn the World. \nMembers: Free; Non-Members: $5.00

SUMMARY:Online Lunch & Learn: “The Watchmakers”
DESCRIPTION:Harry Lenga was born to a family of Chassidic Jews in Kozhnitz\, Poland\, in 1919. The proud sons of a watchmaker\, Harry and his two brothers\, Mailekh and Moishe\, studied their father’s trade at an early age. Upon the German invasion of Poland\, when the Lenga family was upended\, Harry and his brothers never imagined that the tools and skills they learned from their father would be key to their survival.\nJoin us in conversation with Scott Lenga as he recounts the moving and harrowing story of the Holocaust through the eyes of his father and two uncles – the Lenga brothers\, three young men whose watchmaking skills\, rudimentary tools\, and an entrepreneurial spark – helped them survive Nazi concentration camps and stay together despite the odds\nFree to the public. SUMMARY:Online Program - Breaking the Silence: Native American Boarding Schools
DESCRIPTION:Between 1869 and the 1960s\, hundreds of thousands of Native American children were forcibly abducted from their homes and families and placed in more than 350 government-funded\, and often church-run\, Indian Boarding schools. These children were subjected to horrendous conditions\, suffering physical\, sexual\, cultural\, and spiritual abuse and torture. \nThey were banned from speaking their Native languages\, from traditional and cultural practices\, and stripped of traditional clothing\, hair\, and personal belongings. The express intent was to implement cultural genocide through removal and “reprogramming” Native children to carry out systematic destruction of Native cultures and communities. Many of these children never returned home\, and their fates have yet to be accounted for by the U.S. government. \nJoin us for a poignant conversation with Dr. Samuel Torres\, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS)\, as he highlights and addresses the history and ongoing trauma created by the U.S. Indian Boarding School Policy. \nTorres is expected to be accompanied by a boarding school survivor. There will be opportunities for questions after the discussion. \nReservations required.

SUMMARY:Online Lunch & Learn: Jewish and Indigenous People of Australia
DESCRIPTION:Travel with author and Jewish historian Irene Shaland to Australia\, from Sydney and Melbourne to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest\, to understand the land\, its people\, and their history. Discover how Aboriginal people played an important role in opening Australia to Jewish refugees escaping from the Nazi occupied Europe and how\, years later\, the descendants of these refugees were at the forefront of the struggle for the human rights of Aboriginal people. \nIn early December 1938\, a delegation of Aboriginal people marched to Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria. This was not a protest a State or Federal government in defense of their own human rights: it was a brave action demanding Germany to stop the prosecution of the Jews of Europe. \nThe leader of this march\, William Cooper\, was the founder of the Australian Aboriginal League and an unsung hero of the Aboriginal human rights struggle. In his own country\, Cooper and his people had no legal rights and were officially classified as an equivalent of “flora and fauna.” At the time\, Australia maintained the “White Australia Polices” and considered Jews\, though not classified as “colored\,” to be the “others” who should not be issued entrance visas.
