DESCRIPTION:Join CJE SeniorLife Holocaust Community Services and Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center (IHMEC)  for an evening with Dr. Martin Dean\, renowned Holocaust historian\, author\, former war crimes investigator\, and researcher with the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center. Dr. Dean will examine the complex history of the Babiy Yar ravine\, where more than 33\,000 Jewish men\, women\, and children were murdered in just two days. Incorporating new research\, witness testimony\, and images from a 3-D model curated by the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center\, Dean will reconstruct the landscape as it existed on September 29-30\, 1941\, and describe the route taken by the Jews into the ravine. \nThis gathering will include music by internationally renowned cellist\, composer and vocalist Ian Maksin\, remarks by Holocaust Community Services and IHMEC; the launch of Volume II of Never Heard Never Forget– a new collection of narratives in memoriam and honor of Chicago Russian-speaking Survivors; and a candle-lighting ceremony with local Survivors. The program will be conducted in English with simultaneous Russian translation. A virtual viewing option will be available. \nComplimentary docent-led tours of IHMEC’s gallery focused on the Holocaust in the Soviet Union will run from 4:00 – 5:15 pm. One of the cofounders of photojournalism’s famous cooperative Magnum Photos\, Chim’s work was poignant and emphatic – transcending generations\, making him one of the 20th century’s quintessential photographers. \nJoin us for a special presentation by Carole Naggar and Ben Shneiderman to celebrate the opening of our latest exhibition\, Chim: Between Devastation and Resurrection\, which focuses on Seymour’s photographs of post-World War II reconstruction in Europe\, European elections\, the effect of the war on children\, and the birth of the new State of Israel. \nNaggar is an author and photography historian who has studied Chim’s life and work for decades. Her long-awaited biography\, David ‘Chim’ Seymour: Searching for the Light\, 1911-1956\, will be released this fall. DESCRIPTION:Between 1869 and the 1960s\, hundreds of thousands of Native American children were forcibly abducted from their homes and families and placed in more than 350 government-funded\, and often church-run\, Indian Boarding schools. These children were subjected to horrendous conditions\, suffering physical\, sexual\, cultural\, and spiritual abuse and torture. \nThey were banned from speaking their Native languages\, from traditional and cultural practices\, and stripped of traditional clothing\, hair\, and personal belongings. The express intent was to implement cultural genocide through removal and “reprogramming” Native children to carry out systematic destruction of Native cultures and communities. Many of these children never returned home\, and their fates have yet to be accounted for by the U.S. government. \nJoin us for a poignant conversation with Dr. Samuel Torres\, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS)\, as he highlights and addresses the history and ongoing trauma created by the U.S. Indian Boarding School Policy. \nTorres is expected to be accompanied by a boarding school survivor. DESCRIPTION:Travel with author and Jewish historian Irene Shaland to Australia\, from Sydney and Melbourne to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest\, to understand the land\, its people\, and their history. Discover how Aboriginal people played an important role in opening Australia to Jewish refugees escaping from the Nazi occupied Europe and how\, years later\, the descendants of these refugees were at the forefront of the struggle for the human rights of Aboriginal people. \nIn early December 1938\, a delegation of Aboriginal people marched to Melbourne in the Australian state of Victoria. This was not a protest a State or Federal government in defense of their own human rights: it was a brave action demanding Germany to stop the prosecution of the Jews of Europe. \nThe leader of this march\, William Cooper\, was the founder of the Australian Aboriginal League and an unsung hero of the Aboriginal human rights struggle. In his own country\, Cooper and his people had no legal rights and were officially classified as an equivalent of “flora and fauna.” At the time\, Australia maintained the “White Australia Polices” and considered Jews\, though not classified as “colored\,” to be the “others” who should not be issued entrance visas.

DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual tour of the special exhibition\, Shanghai: Safe Haven During the Holocaust\, and explore the lesser-known stories of European Jewish refugees who escaped Nazism in the Shanghai ghetto. The virtual tour includes a video presentation with Chief Curator of Collections and Exhibitions\, Arielle Weininger\, and a live Q&A moderated by Museum personnel. \nArthur Rothstein\, best-known for his Dust Bowl photography during the Great Depression\, was the recipient of more than three dozen awards in photography and photojournalism throughout his career. One of his lesser-known projects included an assignment photographing the Jewish refugee community in Shanghai during World War II. These photographs – alongside artifacts donated by local Holocaust Survivors who lived in the Shanghai ghetto – are featured in the exhibition. \n  \nA link will be e-mailed to the email address you signed up with at least 24 hours before the scheduled program. \nNon-Members: $10.00 \nMembers: Free \nReservations are required. GLASS HOLOCAUST COMMEMORATIVE SERIES\nIn honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, join us for a film screening of Saul & Ruby’s Holocaust Survivor Band\, live performance from the Holocaust Survivor Band\, and post-show discussion with the filmmaker. \nThis unique and compelling story is about having the courage to live one’s dreams\, finding purpose and meaning in life at any age\, the transcendent power of music\, and the importance of speaking out against antisemitism and bigotry. \nLike many Holocaust Survivors\, after World War II\, Saul and Ruby moved to America\, started families and careers\, grew old\, and retired to South Florida. For them\, retirement could have been the last chapter in their story. But then they decided to start a klezmer band: the Holocaust Survivor Band. The band summons the bittersweet memories of childhood in Poland\, but more than that\, it is a celebration of life. \nThe band’s history begins in total obscurity\, playing in residential homes for the elderly and small Jewish community organizations\, and builds up into being invited to perform at venues across the country\, including a coveted performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. \nAfter a lively performance by the film’s subjects\, Saul Drier and Ruby Sosnowicz\, enjoy a post-performance discussion moderated by Academy Award nominated and Emmy winning filmmaker\, Tod Lending. Lending’s work has aired nationally on ABC\, CBS\, NBC\, PBS\, HBO; has been screened theatrically and awarded at national and international festivals; and has been televised internationally in Europe and Asia.
