SUMMARY:Reel Film Club: Ecuador
DESCRIPTION:Chinese migrants Lei and Wong clandestinely arrive in Ecuador. Lei plans to travel all the way to New York; Wong wants to settle in Latin America and bring his son to live with him. Uncertain of their future\, they rely on other Chinese migrants to navigate this new land and culture. Chang\, a local mobster\, is one of those migrants; his intentions towards Lei are less than noble\, and as far as Wong is concerned\, he is nothing more than a fly entangled in Chang’s corrupt web. Ecuador’s official entry to the Academy Award for Best International Feature in 2021\, Venegas’ feature debut offers a unique take on the immigrant experience. \nLos inmigrantes chinos Lei y Wong llegan clandestinamente a Ecuador. SUMMARY:Juan De Marcos & The Afro-Cuban All Stars
DESCRIPTION:Afro-Cuban All Stars is a unique orchestra devoted to promoting the full range of Cuban music\, one that embraces several generations and all musical styles. Over the years many of the band’s musicians have become international stars\, including such brilliant performers as Rubén González\, Ibrahim Ferrer\, Guillermo Rubalcaba\, Amadito Valdés and Manuel “The Guajiro” Mirabal. Led by Juan de Marcos\, the project was born as a result of his work with the acclaimed Cuban “son” band Sierra Maestra. Receiving the go-ahead from World Music Records president Nick Gol\, to produce an album celebrating the classic Cuban sound of the ‘50s featuring a multigenerational group of musicians\, Juan de Marcos recorded A toda Cuba le gusta in 2006 featuring nearly 60 performers. Then\, alongside American guitarist Ry Cooder\, he produced the first Buena Vista Social Club album. And the rest\, as they say\, is history. After several years of success – including four Grammy nominations\, being the subject of several documentaries and films\, and recipients of many other distinctions – the Afro-Cuban All Stars is today\, alongside Los Van Van and Irakere\, one of the best-known and most successful Cuban orchestras in the world.

SUMMARY:Olga Cerpa & Mestisay
DESCRIPTION:Free (with a suggested donation of $10 at the door).\nReservations are strongly recommended!\nCo-presented with the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center. \nSaturday\, February 11th – 8:00 PM \nOlga Cerpa is the most important female voice of the Canary Islands. Nominated for two Latin Grammys\, she has shared the stage with such artists as Omara Portuondo and Joan Manuel Serrat\, among others. Cerpa and Mestisay use “Jallo\,” an insular word that refers to the objects that the sea throws to the Canary shores\, to create splendid songs inspired by the musical influences that reach the beaches of their native land. Latin America\, Portugal\, Cape Verde and the African continent leave their mark as they revisit island songs that have been “found” in these years of musical journeys and that they rediscover for themselves and their audience through original arrangements. Olga Cerpa y Mestisay will be presenting their latest production\, Palosanto\, where they invited 17 renowned guitarists from around the world to record with them. \nCanary Islands and Puerto Rico \nThe commonalities between Canarios and Boricuas have intrigued generations of islanders from both sides of the Atlantic for decades. Probably the most evident similarity between the smallest of the Greater Antilles and the southernmost archipiélago in Spain is found in the language. However\, the strong connection between these two cultures goes beyond the Caribbean Spanish accent\, and can also be seen in its music\, aboriginal roots\, and profound ties to the African continent. Join us as we celebrate the music of the Canary Island and Puerto Rico in this special co-production of the International Latino Cultural Center and Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center.

Born as Javier Alberto Mendoza in the state of Virginia to a Spanish mother and Mexican/American father\, Javier’s love for music burned bright from a young age. The ever-winding path of life took him to Saint Louis: the City of Miles Davis\, Tina Turner\, and Chuck Berry\, where he saw musical success with his new following. In 2014 Mendoza moved to Music City\, Nashville\, TN where he is embarking on a project as Hobo Cane.

SUMMARY:The Reel Film Club: Costa Rica
DESCRIPTION:Víctor has lived by himself\, tending to his cows\, in the mountains of Costa Rica for decades. He believes his neighbors have ordered their one indigenous employee to spy on him and that they have stolen his favorite cow. His 12-year-old grandson has been sent by his mother to live with Víctor just as the old man’s paranoia and hatred has worsened. News of a fugitive hiding in the mountains adds to the tension\, as well as Víctor’s growing blindness. Gustavo Fallas’s follow-up to “Puerto Padre” (an official selection of the 30th Chicago Latino Film Festival) is a low-key\, fog-shrouded\, unsettling portrait of a man quickly succumbing to his prejudices and demons.

SUMMARY:JUAN CARMONA WITH YOUBA ADJRAD AND THE ANDALUSIAN TRAIL
DESCRIPTION:Juan Carmona was only ten years old when his father gave him his first guitar. His passion for the instrument grew and his virtuosity was quickly remarked by professional musicians. Juan’s journey as a professional guitarist took him back to his roots: Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia. For 9 years\, he absorbed as much as he could in the purest flamenco tradition\, rubbing elbows with some of its biggest names\, like Joaquín Grilo\, Agujetas\, Duquende\, Antonio Canales\, Chano Domínguez and many others. A self-taught musician\, he can boast of having composed his Sinfonía Flamenca and Orillas\, today performed by many orchestras in the world\, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (Australia)\, the St Louis Symphony Orchestra (USA)\, and the Russian Philarmony. His albums Alchemya\, Orillas\, Sinfonía Flamenca and El Sentido del Aire were nominated for the Latin GRAMMY. His new album\, Zyriab 6.7\, retraces the journey of the musician-poet Zyriab\, stopping off along the Mediterranean\, from oasis to caravanserai\, covering 6\,743 km from Baghdad to Cordoba.\nThe Andalusian Trail: From Rajasthan\, India to the Middle East\, from North Africa and across the Mediterranean into Andalusia\, Spain\, musical ideas and instruments were exchanged and have contributed to the foundation of Andalusian and flamenco music. Through music\, dance\, and storytelling\, members of Las Guitarras de España and Surabhi Ensemble take to the trail and tell the tale of this shared cultural history from medieval Andalusia to the present. The performance includes original and traditional repertoire of Spanish guitar\, Arab-Andalusian poetry and music\, as well as Rajasthani\, Middle Eastern\, and flamenco folk music and dance.\nPresented by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago\, Intercultural Music Production\, and the Old Town School of Folk Music as part of the Ojalá project funded by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Arts.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Sun in the Water / Sol en el agua
DESCRIPTION:A reception will take place prior to screening with appetizers and wine provided\, and a conversation regarding the film will proceed the screening. \n6:00 PM – Dominican Rep. Appetizers and Wine \n7:00 PM – Film screening (Spanish with English subtitles) \nParking at 33 W Ontario ($10 with validation) \n\n\n\n\nSun in the Water / Sol en el agua\n\nA day at the beach with a baby; a car accident; a fight: these are some of the fragments Sol is able to remember bit by bit after she wakes up at a hospital. The doctor and the two nurses attending her refuse to answer her questions while keeping her sedated. A character by the name of Ino appears in her dreams guiding her through her lost memories. But Ino is not a figment of her imagination. “Sun in the Water” is a challenging and mind-blowing psychological thriller about consciousness\, guilt\, fate and the choices that we make.
