DESCRIPTION:Signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19\, 1942\, Executive Order 9066 led to the incarceration of 120\,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans during WWII. Every year\, the Japanese American community in Chicago comes together to commemorate E.O. 9066 as a reminder of the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis and the importance of protecting the rights and freedoms of all. This year\, Day of Remembrance 2024 will include three events focused on intergenerational impact; \n\nSaturday\, February\, 17th\, 2024 from 2:30-4:30 at the Japanese American Service Committee: “Intergenerational Conversations: Ripples of the Past”; a workshop on intergenerational conversations for the Nikkei community. Advanced registration required : https://bit.ly/dor2024intergenconvos\nSunday\, February 18th\, 2024 from 2-4PM at the Chicago History Museum: “Japanese American Incarceration; Healing Histories Across Generations”; this Day of Remembrance main event will feature a conversation between Midwest based keynote speakers Jami Nakamura Lin\, author of “The Night Parade: A Speculative Memoir\,”and Dr. Donna Nagata\, researcher of intergenerational impact from Japanese American incarceration. SUMMARY:Journey Chicago: Stories that Travel: Mythology\, Folklore\, and Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of Journey Chicago\, the Chicago Cultural Alliance’s annual citywide festival of cross-cultural events. \nA panel discussion focusing on the varied relationships different Diaspora communities have with the mythological & folklore stories of their culture of origin. We are specifically interested in interrogating the ways in which different communities invest in or distance themselves from their ancient/classical mythology and folklore in the American Diaspora\, and how those relationships have shifted over time. We will examine this question through both an academic & artistic lens. \n  \nOur Panel: \nAnna Cai (they/them) is a queer Indonesian Chinese American community-driven artist currently living in Chicago who explores the futurities of Asian diasporic identity through relationships\, textiles\, costume\, performance\, film\, graphic design\, and print media. At the center of their creative and social practice is a desire to steer their community into a future that embraces a transformation of fiction and reality and rejects outdated constructs of nation\, gender and capital. \nCai has received multiple awards for their work in art\, design\, and community engagement. They were a finalist in Lesotho Fashion Week of 2018 and their work in film has been selected for Lesotho Film Festival between the years of 2018-2020. Most recently they were a recipient of the 2020 New Artist Society scholarship\, the 2022 Caxton Book Club grant\, and Graphic Design USA’s 2022 Students to Watch Award. They are also a member of the 2022 Spring Tanda Artist Research fellowship program hosted by Chuquimarca Art Library in Chicago\, Illinois. They have collaborated with several organizations internationally including the Morija Arts Centre\, The Hub in Morija\, Lesotho Girls in Tech\, the Public Housing Authority of Residents in Charlottesville\, the White House Kitchen Garden initiative\, and the Chinese Historical Society of Memphis & the Midsouth. They have initiated numerous independent publications and initiatives such as The Morija Makers (2018)\, Stories from Westhaven (2016)\, and the upcoming Chicago-based independent magazine Tongues (2022). \nThey received a BS in Architecture from the University of Virginia. In 2016 to 2018 they served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho. Upon leaving the organization\, Cai apprenticed with a local textile artist and began exploring identity expression through wearable sculpture and performance. During this time\, they gained invaluable experience on how to build trusting relationships and engage in art-making that embraces an art practice at the intersection of community building\, education\, and design. They recently completed an MFA Visual Communication program at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago where they were immersed in rituals that combine mythology\, pleasure\, play\, historical fabulation\, and the reclaiming of archives. \nDr. Katherine Kelaidis is the Director of Research and Content at the National Hellenic Museum. She has held research appointments at the American University in Cairo\, Oxford University\, and the Free University Berlin. She is also a Senior Editor at Religion Dispatches. Dr. Kelaidis holds a B.A. in Classical Languages from the University of California\, Berkeley and a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of London. \n  \nCori Nakamura Lin a midwest-based Japanese//Taiwanese-American illustrator and designer specializing in movement art and culture-centered storytelling. By visualizing narratives and illuminating concepts\, Cori makes art that fuels action. SUMMARY:Film Screening & Discussion: 80 Years Later
DESCRIPTION:The feature documentary 80 YEARS LATER explores the racial inheritance of Japanese American family incarceration during World War II through multigenerational conversations with survivors and their descendants.\nIn the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066 that imprisoned 120\,000 Japanese Americans in World War II\, families still grapple with the legacy of their experience. How does one inherit traumatic history across generations?\nOur community screening in Chicago is especially meaningful as many incarcerated Japanese Americans relocated and rebuilt their lives in Chicago following their incarceration. The screening will be 50 min long and will be followed by a Q&A with cast and crew from the film.\nThe Q&A will be moderated by Karen Su\, Global Asian Studies Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor at the University of Illinois Chicago. Professor Su started teaching Introduction to Asian American Studies in 2006\, before the Asian American Studies program was formally established. She serves as the Principal Investigator and Project Director of the UIC AANAPISI Initiative.\nIn her creative work\, Prof. Su focuses on children’s picture books featuring Asian American life stories. She was chosen to participate in a mentorship program with Maya Gonzalez at Reflection Press in 2017 and was a We Need Diverse Books mentee in 2018. One of her current works-in-progress focuses on the story of Yuki Llewellyn who was incarcerated as a child at Manzanar during WWII.\nThe filmmaker Celine Parreñas Shimizu considers it incredibly important that this community impact screening amplifies existing work that supports formerly incarcerated Japanese Americans and their descendants. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Japanese American Service Committee (JASC). JASC engages people of all ages to experience Japanese American history and culture and to improve their well-being through innovative\, high quality programs and services tailored to the multicultural community.\nThis is a masked event. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make Autumn-themed Nerikiri with Wagashi Master\, Toshiko Sugii Steffes. \nAttendees will make colorful Chrysanthemum designs of Nerikiri sweets. \nThis design is called “Kisewata(着せ綿)” and is a special design for “Chō yō no sekku（重陽の節句)” which means chrysanthemums celebrations or longevity celebration on September 9th. Chrysanthemums are believed to have the power to purge evil spirits and bring longevity in Japan. \nNerikiri was originally made to be served in the Japanese tea ceremony. Nerikiri is made by mixing and kneading the ingredients white butter bean paste and mochi rice cake. \nDate: Friday\, September 9\, 2022\nTime: 6:00 – 7:30 pm CS \nFee: $65 for JASC Members\, $75 for Non-members \n_______________ \nMaterials will be available for pick up at the JASC office weekdays 9:00 am – 5:00 pm at 4427 N. DESCRIPTION:Join the Japanese American Service Committee for a free screening event on Thursday\, August 4th\, 6:00-7:30 p.m.! Our amazing Legacy Center interns will be premiering their audio and video projects as a culmination of their eight-week experience at JASC. Come to meet these talented young people\, learn what resonated with them in the Legacy Center’s archives\, and see the fruits of their labor. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with our six interns. \nThis event will be held in person at the JASC building (4427 N Clark St\, Chicago) with a simultaneous livestream on the JASC Youtube channel for those who are unable to attend\, and a recording will be available afterward. \nIn person attendees are invited to stay for a reception with refreshments to congratulate the interns on their successful completion of the program. \nTo attend in person:  Pre-registration required\, registration cutoff is noon on Monday\, August\, 1st. Click here to register. \nTo join remotely or watch a recording afterward:  No registration required. Simply visit the JASC Youtube channel to watch the program.

Clark Street \nFREE\, PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED – Click here to register \n\n\nSigned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19\, 1942\, Executive Order 9066 led to the incarceration of 120\,000 Japanese Americans during WWII.  Every year\, the Japanese American community in Chicago comes together to commemorate EO9066 as a reminder of the fragility of civil liberties in times of crisis and the importance of remaining vigilant in protecting the rights and freedoms of all. \nDay of Remembrance 2022 features a variety of speakers celebrating the passage of the Teaching Equitable Asian American Community History (TEAACH) Act.  Signed into law on July 9\, 2021\, the TEAACH Act makes Illinois the first state to mandate that Asian American history be taught in public schools.  Join us to learn why the TEAACH Act matters\, how the task of implementation is being addressed\, and how the Japanese American community is contributing to the effort.  The program will feature a showcase of classroom-ready resources for teaching about EO9066 and incarceration through a Chicago lens. \nChicago-based Ho Etsu Taiko will take the stage to perform a new work composed especially for Day of Remembrance 2022.  Ho Etsu Taiko blends the deep-rooted culture of Japanese American drumming with influences that inspire and celebrate the diversity of their performing members. \nMasks and vaccinations required.  There will be no refreshments served at this year’s event. \n  \nTHIS EVENT IS SPONSORED BY THE CHICAGO JAPANESE AMERICAN COUNCIL\, CHICAGO JAPANESE AMERICAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY\, JAPANESE AMERICAN CITIZENS LEAGUE – CHICAGO CHAPTER\, JAPANESE AMERICAN SERVICE COMMITTEE\, AND JAPANESE MUTUAL AID SOCIETY OF CHICAGO
