SUMMARY:Somos Un Solo Pueblo\, Mexico y Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:Somos un Solo Pueblo\, Mexico y Puerto Rico\, part of the Millennium Park Residency Program\, will be a one-of-a-kind historical event aimed at uniting the Mexican and Puerto Rican communities in a symphonic concert setting.   To anchor the main event\, The Chicago Philharmonic Society will serve as the official orchestra that will be accompanied by international musicians from Puerto Rico and Mexico.  Musicians from Cuerdas Clásicas and those affiliated with PRAA will open the main performance culminating with a full performance of all musicians. Leading up to this concert\, the Somos un Solo Pueblo\, Mexico y Puerto Rico project will include a series of advance music presentations (3) at Millennium Park featuring local Chicago based music groups.  Each invited local musical group will conduct a presentation during the months of May and July of 2023\, in preparation for and leading up to the August 26\, 2023\, performance. Local performing groups include Afri Caribe\, Sones de Mexico\, Cuerdas Clásicas\, and PRAA’s Latin Music Project Ensemble.

DESCRIPTION:The Cuatro is regarded as the national instrument of Puerto Rico and is revered by the Puerto Rican community as an important part of our history. It is recognized and acknowledged as “our guitar” and holds important traditional and historical value. The Emmy Award-winning Annual National Cuatro Festival (NCF) is a unique music event that brings the best Cuatro musicians “Cuatristas” from Puerto Rico and the mainland to Chicago for a one-of-a-kind concert experience. This cultural event highlights the national instrument of Puerto Rico as an important part of our heritage and history. \nEach year there is a special dedication and one of the highlights of the concert is an opening performance showcasing students from the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance’s Latin Music Project Ensemble. It is more than a concert\, it as a gathering of Chicago’s most long time Latino residents\, the Puerto Rican community\, and an opportunity to join together with pride to celebrate the beauty of the Chicago’s diversity. Preserving Puerto Rican traditions is at the heart of PRAA’s work and the National Cuatro Festival is a key part of our cultural and educational initiatives. \nOver the years the National Cuatro Festival has presented great cuatristas like Yomo Toro\, Pedro Guzman\, Alvin Medina\, Luis Sanz\, Prodijio Claudio\, Christina Nieves\, Manny Trinidad\, Emma Colon Zayas\, Madibel Delgado\, Juradito\, Quique Domenech\, Javier Mendez\, among others. DESCRIPTION:Since 2017\, PRAA has hosted the Noche Caribeña concert at Navy Pier’s Polk Bros Park Lake Stage Lawn. In partnership with Navy Pier\, this summertime event is FREE and open to the public. Featured are Cuatristas along with international and local artists with their groups\, as well as\, up and coming musicians. This concert offers audience members multiple music genres including Puerto Rican and Afro-Caribbean folk\, popular Latin American\, big band\, salsa\, ballads\, bomba and plena interpretations. Set with a backdrop of Navy Pier\, spectacular views of Chicago and the resonances of music draw Chicago residents and visitors for an enjoyable evening concert. \nThis year on August 13\, 2022 PRAA was honored to present to you some of the most prominent local music artists from Chicago.

SUMMARY:Community Parades and Activism: LGBTQ Claiming its Space
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Viewing La Primera Parada & Panel Discussion\n  \n\nAn open discussion about LGBTQ/SGL activism in Chicago communities. A panel of Latin@ and African American LGBTQ/SGL leaders will discuss the daring experience of walking for the first time on their community parades (1993-1994). A second panel of young activists will react and ask questions contextualizing that historical moment to current efforts and together discuss how to move forward. Some of the panelists include Alden Bell\, Bonsai Bermúdez\, Charles Nelson\, David Gauna\, Julio Rodriguez\, Liliana Macias\, Mona Noriega\, Robert Castillo\, and Shelton Watson. \nThe event is presented by the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance in partnership with ADODI Chicago – an SGL brotherhood organization for men of African descent\, and ALMA – Association of Latina/o/x Motivating Action. The program is supported by the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation’s Broadening Narratives fund. \nThe program will mark the exhibition closing “La Primera Parada (The First Parade): Chicago Stonewall Moments at the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance\, 3000 N Elbridge Ave (old firehouse near the corner of Central Park and Milwaukee Avenues in Avondale. DESCRIPTION:Desde Mi Barrio (From my Neighborhood) is a concert series presented by Puerto Rican Arts Alliance’s the Latin Music Project. This series features local and national musicians while celebrating the rich music of Puerto Rico and other Latinx cultures. \nJoin us on April 30 for the next concert in our series\, Cuerdas Clásicas. This Latin American performing arts group is also a not-for-profit cultural organization marked by the qualities of troubadours and bohemians who at times perform in formal dress and tuxedos\, interpreting melodies of a clasical and semi-classical nature\, and at times perform as members of an Estudiantina\, wearing vestments in accordance with the customs of sixteenth century Spain. \nThis concert will take place in the Juan and Gladys Mendez Music Hall (located inside the Latin Music Project Center). Donations for this event go directly to supporting our youth arts programs and community artists.

In addition to leading and recording with his own jazz ensembles\, he is a member of several others and an in-demand player in the city’s jazz\, funk\, Latin jazz and salsa scenes.
